  1. Those R some nice looking footballs!!! Big O style ! And in a much more scenic surrounding....(no dis on anywhere else, though ). Sweet job.
  2. Nice smallie in pic 3; largie (?) in pic 5....care to divulge where U were on Champlain (approx.)?
  3. Rippin' Line....Nice fish....looks like about 9lbs.....or so...(unless ur a really small person ) Want to share some details on where/how? We're curious....
  4. Caught a nice 'eye in early May 2011 just outside of the entry to Hugh's in Wayne Co in the Big O while tryin' for the early salmonid shore bite. Had not even hooked the Rapala to the planer board yet. Fish hit while attempting to clamp in the release! About an 8lbr. There are more and more of the big ones; but not like the Bay of Quinte (from what I understand)......
  5. dekalweit....my biggest Northern ever came on a 3/4 oz Daredevil spoon with 2 trailer spoonlets on either side of the treble. Color was yellow frog (yellow w/black spots) & a background scale finish to it. It was from shore in Clayton on the St. Lawrence in September. Clear water though with rocky bottom and a few weeds. Close to shore near the end of the retrieve. Not conditions at all like Braddocks, but the yellow pattern is what produced. And yellow or orange has worked many times for me with Esocidae. If cripples says white with fast spinning blades does the trick there, go with it.This may resemble the alewifes... a fav food for many fish. And do pick up another "faster" (stiffer) action tipped pole. The Uglys all have a "slow" (soft) action tip in all except the bigger (big rods) sizes. A faster action will give U more ability to control what the lure is doing during the cast AND the retrieve.....
  6. Whitecaps on Canadice is impressive....skunked is DEpressive! Perhaps if U were on Honeoye or Hemlock U might have nailed some 'eyes....
  7. Just caught this thread.... Saw something on one of the food channels about a year or two ago that kind of intrigued me. It was about a restaurant somewhere in Texas that was all about carp all of the time. All they did was prepare regular common carp (not the dastardly bighead and grass carp) in all kinds of ways. And this was no tiny whole in the wall; It had some size to it and the clientele raved about it. Now, I'm not all naive and gullible about stuff (others might not agree!), but I do believe these fish, if from clean waters might be tasty. I love to cook and have spent much of my life in the food industry and know a little of how, with great ingredients and and good technique mastery, this could b possible. As a kid, I tried cooking carp at home, as well as every other kind of fish; panfish (perch and sunnies) were the best. But the carp had possibilities. The Texas eatery might b found online; I forgot what show and the place name. I'm just sayin'...
  8. Kevin J Legg....Hey! U scratched my anchor!...No wonder tigers eat their young....Rodney Dangerfield.....I tell ya ,I get no respect!
  9. BSmaster, ....Seriously? 10lbs? Honestly it doesn't surprise me though. I like that beautiful and perfectly sized waterway. not too big, but big enough for some decent float fishing and some ok access from shore in some spots with some wading....The 'eyes there seem to like the whirlpool eddys and turns and stucture where U find that. Time of year also seems to make a difference. We have caught bunches of just slightly less than to just over legal size ones in places where they are not to be found at other times. Almost always some obliging smallies or largemouths ready to keep U occupied in the meantime.
  10. U guys R a blast to read! Yeah, and Pokepole 39 reminds me of some of the old guys I used to work with back in the day... real characters, but cool in a nutty way>> !!
  11. BSmaster- Ha ha haaa! Well stated. Say, you ever work that "creek" running between Canisteo and Addison for 'eyes? There used to be a very good population of them in there (plenty of small ones and an occasional lunker-3-6lbs.) We'd catch them going for the bass and were usually surprised, as they would readily pick up grub tailed jigs or minnow baits....
  12. Wow...That's a BIG bowfin!! Do U know the NYS record is 12lbs. 14 ozs? That fish looks awfully close to that size..... World record is 21+.....
  13. Yep. picked them up more than once trolling in Seneca for whatever on trolling spoons and in the St Lawrence casting for largemouths and smallies in the International Rift on natural silver countdown Rapalas. Great fighters, like largemouths that don't give up; and can get to a good size, too.
  14. Landshark.....34 over 10lbs. last year alone....? Sswweeeeet!! All walleyes? Awesome
  15. Sounds like a great day of fishing!! Jigging for lakers opens you up to a whole new attitude about lake trout fishing.... They fight SOOOooo much better when caught still fishing, rather than "draggin' up an old boot", which is what we often think when picking them up in the big O while trying to tell what has hit our trolled baits. I think they really fight hard when picked off the bottom jigging....And U can use bass jigs with tubes and grubtails, too!
  16. I just keep thinkin'....man, we are blessed with really descent opportunities....no trout; catch bass... no bass; catch pike....no pike; catch 'eyes...no 'eyes; catch carp...no carp; catch big panfish...no panfish; go home and have a big burger or whatever and think about tomorrow....
  17. Not voting but I like bosco's thought the most. With the old timey ideas of endless stringer shots and the short sited view that nothing can be depleted and no one need care about anything but taking for themselves whatever they could get, steadily changing over to more considerate behavior....I do believe the walleye and all fisheries R getting better and we need to keep working on improving the fun for all.....including for those fish that make it fun. (That means eating and the occasional trophy, if wanted, too.)
  18. Say, R the first and 3rd pics two different fish or two different days; or both? Those are some beautiful husky musky indeed!!
  19. Sweet! depending on how big whoever holding the fish is I'd say a nice 3-5lb channel cat....
  20. Yeah, old man. Lots of ponds and lakes in NY have been changed from good for brookies to not so because of introduced species. Maine has tried, successfully, to attempt to keep the rural atmosphere in it's state as original as possible. Their government has tried. The spread of the nearby Boston metro area, part of the original "megalopolis" in the U.S., has been somewhat successfully held back by certain moves on the state's part...unlike in neighboring N.H. and, to a lesser extant, Vermont.
  21. Awesome! So it's not just the way your holding him to the camera that makes him look bigger...it IS bigger! Nice work!!....What do U mean, "nothing crazy"...I'd say biggest northern ever, and a good one, that is pretty crazy, man!!!
  22. Also, when U see those folks who are reeling them in while u r getting skunked, be bold, not shy, about picking their brains for tips. Your situation will probably b obvious... Most people will be glad to share some info with you if you ask for it. Unless they are just meat fisherman (actually commercial guys going to sell them to some customers) what's the worst they are going to do ...tell you to get lost??? Mostly not, I think. Go ahead and talk to them while they are fishing (for a short time!). Chances are they will help you. If not, move on...
  23. I love it when the 'seeds get bigger than the 'gills Btw, that fat one on the lower left looks as if he IS a pumpkin!!. I fell in love with fishing when I was about 9 and caught a beautiful 2 inch baby pumpkinseed that had the end of a small worm lodged in it's mouth; not even hooked! It was just so gorgeously colored in the palm of my hand....it was serious heartfelt falling in love. I'd been fishing several times before that for years and had caught bigger fish. But that one little guy, in the afternoon sunlight, with neighborhood/school chums nearby catching spawning perch and 'seeds down on Long Island in fresh water....launched me on a passion I've followed with gusto for the rest of my life!!... Just thought I'd share....
  24. Niiiicce! I really like the way fish in photo 3 is being held to the camera....Looks like a 15lbr in In Fisherman....
  25. iiwhistlerii- that's some great info on a little targeted species! I've seen massed schools of them in Chautauqua and wondered on how to get them. Occasionally one is caught incidentally while going for something "more desirable". Good stuff
