Sodus 3/11
panfisher replied to RodBuster's topic in New York Fishing Reports - Lake Ontario (South Shore)
If you can get out on the big lake at all this time o year, you'll catch browns and maybe steelies real lose to shore where heavy waves can be dealt with. Provided the wind is southerly in some manner. And you don't have to have the real early start.... Just hang and get some reports, then go out later if u can. -
Angle-o-t-d...The security is a result of the 9/11 attacks. before that nuts happening. the warm water from there was always good spring and winter fishing. That is the Ginna nuclear power plant, one of the oldest continually operated nuclear power plants in the U.S., since 1970. The oldest? Oyster Creek (1969) in New Jersey.

Rapalas of almost any type work well for both the 'eyes and bass in the rivers....just make sure U can afford to lose some! Hint...Jigs. under a 1/4 oz work well and are way cheaper !

You can catch the 'eyes in the Canisteo River in the deeper pools and eddies. especially if it is under a bridge, like in Cameron. You used to be able to fish from shore in many locations, but some home building has changed that in recent times. It's an excellent kayak or canoe or any little boat stream; not bad for some wading, too. (I just hope it is not ruined by bad gas extraction activities). Try any turns in the river...Also the Chemung, right in downtown Elmira for the walleyes, near some of the low dams.

Aahhh! Those are some tasty looking shots, Lund SSS! Reminds me of mounted stringers I used to see at the old Bob's Bait Shop in Lakeville on Conesus (sadly, he's passed on..). And a very good info posting with the anchoring tips. For years now Seneca has been my fav spot for Jumbos...

Having lived in beantown and the big apple, with family in the bay area around 'frisco, last wknd's playoffs were a BLAST!! Coughlin's from about 30 miles away... Go Patriots!!! Go Giants!!! ( I'm only slightly preferring New England because Belichick rocks as coach.) This game will be just as great as the championships!

Glad to see ice on the lakes... Though I've never set foot on the ice at Mendon Ponds, it remains one of my fav small water fishing spots. From when I was 14, riding my bike 5 miles from Pittfsord, after school, to fish from shore there. I caught my first Northern Pike there, from shore at the 100 Acre Pond. A young 8 inch fish on a 1/8 oz Creek Chub Darter, green frog pattern, cast south of the boat launch in the shallow lily pad filled area. The other ponds, especially Deep Pond, are great for nice 16 to 20 inch largemouths, which can be observed flying 3 to 4 feet into the air in the middle of hot summer afternoons, I guess for dragonflies. And, in the middle of the night in those same hot summer times, smack dab in the middle of the ponds, beautiful big Bluegills on the surface with sponge ants or spiders on fly outfits. During those days, one can easily hit the linesides and big 'gills with those sponges or any popping bugs right in tight to those pads and weedbeds. Never been there ice fishing, though. Just wanted to give a shout out to other folks who enjoy a fairly unique and beautiful watershed of ponds much appreciated by myself and some others in this region of more well known and famous bigger and more notorious waters!

Finger Lakes trib report for Nov and Dec 2011
panfisher replied to rustyrat's topic in Finger Lakes Discussion
Yes. Great news on the career.... But don't give up the fishing...Even if you (or anybody else) thinks you've "worn it out"!!! Good luck in the new gig ! -
What!? You're hanging up the fishing...?? It's just getting started!! Whatever for the reason for that insanity, U might want to see a doctor, first..

Any of the finger lakes are good for perch.....Any of the big lake Ontario bays (Irondequoit, Sodus, etc.) are great as well. My most frequented for eaters and jumbos are Seneca, Canandaigua, and, especially for ice, Sodus Bay and Kueka Lake. These choices are mostly because proximity to my crib...

O.K. We'll be waiting with baited ears...!

Merry Chistmas to Stanley Steamer in the hosptal
panfisher replied to buckboardjr's topic in Finger Lakes Discussion
Please keep up fighting and egging your brother on in every way you can. I have a brother who is also fighting to recover from a very bad health situation, and I do that for him. Belated Christmas Greetings, and always work for a much happier Happy New Year!!!! -
Beautiful... Niicceee! Reminds me of fishing the Canisteo River in Steuben county. Smaller water, but u can catch smallies, largemouths, and walleyes with same lure, much of it wading, but best via small canoe or kayak. Too warm below Canisteo for trout ...

New PureBred Muskie Lake
panfisher replied to mostlymuskies's topic in Musky, Tiger Musky & Pike (ESOX)
Let's really open this up... Evidently almost any fish that can exist in similar waters (fresh, salt, warm water, cold, anadromus), could potentially move into and exist, possibly even reproduce successfully without 99% of folks knowing of them. Surprise life forms are found in many places where it was thought they did not. How about the coelacanth...Anyone ever think there might be bull sharks in the big lakes? -

Does anybody know of a connection to ANY current or past DEC employee who might have some serious info, or could lead one to, this seneca muskie subject? -
Niiiccee!!

New PureBred Muskie Lake
panfisher replied to mostlymuskies's topic in Musky, Tiger Musky & Pike (ESOX)
BP Swing, I am away from my "archive" of past New York Outdoor News papers, but unless that was a HUGE front page typo with front page color pic, a fellow from Walworth landed a beautiful musky (22lb) out of seneca in either '009 or'10. And the little guy I caught 20 plus years ago was definitely a musky. No way to confuse the markings for any of the other esox members! Of course, I have no proof of it, but, I have no proof of several things I've seen in my life that I know are for real and anyone can say, "Yeah.. Sure...."
