Controversial Topics for Great Lakes Trout and Salmon
ifishy replied to cdq's topic in Open Lake Discussion
gill t hit a good one atlantic salmon stocking and restoration vs pacific stocking. lots of info lots of opinions even some science out there and is argued from both sides frequently. another good one might be tributary bag limits vs lake bag limits. -

Finger lakes tackle captians packs are a great start they work in the fingers and in lake O and the quality will last meaning if they catch a fish you wont have to replace them.

i saw an experiment once where they dipped spoons in the bilge rubbed sunscreen on them and all sorts of stuff and put them down on video. you could see the scent trail wash off in a couple of minuets and the fish would hit them at the same rate as the ones not soaked. most spoons are pretty non-porous so they just dont hold a scent. as far as other baits well it all depends on the material the more porous the more it holds scent and the more it can be a problem or a benifit if you use an attractent.

Planer board spread question
ifishy replied to tj13825's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
for a 6 rod spread i like 2 monos on each board than i run the lead off the corners easy to clear if needed easy to reset easy to lift the tip in a hurry if you creep a little shallow and less extream of a speed effect on turns. you can get in fairly tight with this spread and be realitively manuverable. I catch lots of browns off the corners with the lead so I dont think its too close to the boat. I also troll with a 4 stroke kicker so i dont put out a lot of noise. if all your hits are on the lead than you can run multiples of the same leangth per board. resetting one extra line seems easy but after a few times it gets old quick espicially if you run out of releases and have to bring the board in to get them back -

ifishy replied to ifishy's topic in New York Fishing Reports - Lake Ontario (South Shore)
they were scattered all around shallowist hit was 11 feet deepest was 28 we got hits in 52 degree and 43 degree water. there was a nice green color that went out to about 35 ft they seemed to be all through that. -

finally got a chance to make the first trip of the year. didnt launch till after 1 that was an experience with no docks in. started troling west didnt get the first hit till after the plant than from there had a fairly steady pick. ended the day at 4:30 going 9 for 10. Happy to get the boat out and running but did discover an electrical problem with the ignition on the main. other than that everything ran well. every rod took at least one fish today but a black and gold thunder stick and an orange UV thunder stick took the most hits. watermelon spoon took one. a green and gold FLT spoon firetiger storm and and a smolt pattern rapala all took fish. they were all in the 2-6 lb range. looks like the start of what will hopefully be a good second year back on the big lake.

if you can afford a kicker its the way to go I got lucky and was given a 7.5 honda 4 stroke on long term loan. i can run about 3 trips on 4 gallons of gas. its quite and the security of an extra motor is worth its weight in gold. as for recomended types I would kill before giving up my honda simple and solid when I got it it had sat in a garage for 10 years. I cleaned the carb changed the oil and it fired right up. it runs steady all the time. those small hondas are worth a look even the older ones if they were cared for at all let alone well.

Early Season Kings
ifishy replied to SmellsLikeFishNH's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
this is how I grew up on the kings all the rods had 12 or 14lb with no leaders. dipseys were 20lb mono. It was a different lake in those days. quality 12lb and loosen the drag and your good to go for leaders. I put heavier on rods with flashers and such just because of the twist. -

why would the turbidity be measured by lowering a disk into the water this leaves way to much open for interperatation. think if his eyes were slowly worsening over the years as happens to us all the water could be the same and he would percieve an increase in turbidity. heck imagine if he was developing cataracts. the only way to take a true measure is to run the sample through a spectrometer and measure absorbtion. the disk method is a rough and very basic example of the principle. I dont have the years of experience on seneca that some have but in the 10 years i've been in the area I would say the water has gotten clearer but this is very subjective. also as BS said a lot more was dumped into the lake pre clean water act than is now. that the lake is changing sure but as has been stated i dont think you can point to any fewer than a dozen different causes and they are not all pushing in the same way. As for the selling of perch well if the population is in decline than limiting any of the pressures on the population can potentially help. If a population is not in decline than it is maintaining balance. The pressure would not come from selling per say but from overharvest of populations in decline. The theory is that selling encourages through monetary reward the practice of overharvest beyond what the regulations allow. Better enforcement would be great but costly. Better use of technology could make management at the buyer level much more feasable. for example fish sales can all be done through an online database. Id (drivers license) is required to sell that id number is tacked to each sale and available realtime anywhare in the world. if that id number is tied to sales of qtys more than allowed to be harvested than you can mail the fine to the offender. maybe the change should be to limit the number one can sell in any given period of time? or maybe it really does have to be on a regional basis maybe a limited selling season to protect a spawn. Maybe the fingers really cant support the harvest. I dont really fish perch but I know if one population crashes it can effect the whole system so I think we all have an interest and hopefully the DEC can figure out the best option

Salmon near Seattle test positive for drugs
ifishy replied to Todd in NY's topic in Open Lake Discussion
maybe they should put steroids in the wastewater. as long as the fish are doing drugs. If they test positive for HGH does that disqualify them for the record books or do they just get an astrix maybe thats the real reason fish oil makes you healthier it just gets you doped up a bit so you dont feel the pain -
i always found that for size of bullhead location was more important than bait. worms were always the easiest to transport and use and fishing at night keeps the sunnies to a minimum. livers work but for the love of god dont forget them in your car man they stink. leeches work but they can escape in the fridge if you keep them (dont ask). I could never use shrimp they are to tasty for me to let go. two hooks about a foot apart with a weight below keep the rod set at a low angle and put a piece of foil on the tip to see better in the lantern light. if you fish in a spawning area you'll catch a lot of similar sized fish if you are in a channel on the way to a spawning area you'll catch a nice mix. some of my favorite areas had a tendancy to produce dogfish (bowfin) as well they are always a blast at night all them teeth when its tough to see out. I kind of miss those days when I could be up all night and still function the next morning

2016 DEC State of the Lake Meeting Schedule Announced
ifishy replied to BlueEye's topic in Open Lake Discussion
its a shame the cost of doing such is not that high and it could allow for that many more people to participate. more interest is always better for the big picture. oh well i'll have to read the highlights if i can find them -
Spoons vs Sticks for Spring Browns
ifishy replied to IUP30's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
throw a mix out first thing and let the fish tell you if they have a preference. always keep at least one or two of each down though that way if the preference changes as the conditions change you'll have an indicator instead of just not getting anymore hits -
