small boat spring fishing can be a ton of fun especially if you hit a double or triple. I did it for years with the 14 footer. another good place to study a chart is the navionics web app you can get 1 foot contours so you can get a feel for where on the shoreline you can expect to have to turn out from shore. http://webapp.navionics.com/#@6&key=o%7DfoGzqklM

I need a clamp-on downrigger mount for a utility boat
ifishy replied to Todd in NY's topic in Tackle and Techniques
I used some angle iron to create brackets that i bolted to the inside flush with the top of the rail. I than bolted a 2x6 on top of that and did a counter sink on the bolts. it made for a nice flat gunnel that is solid as a rock. we have been able to lift the boat up with boards to reposition on the trailer. in the side pic you can see the bolts coming through the rail (it had an overhang on the outside). there are more bolts on the inside through the brackets. put a coat of varnish or waterproofer on the boards and they will last. I have a board across the back for the riggers but without that I could have mounted them the side just as easy. I had a blast customizing my little boat over the years. -
Copper Lengths Answer...simplified? YES!

how did you determine how much volume a given leangth of line requires? was it by mass and density or did you do a displacement experiment or did you test it out? I only ask because if you did a displacement or if you used mass and density did you factor in the filling efficency of the line? round line does not perfectly fill space on a spool there is a protion of empty space as the line layers over itself. if this isnt taken into account than the reel would hold less than the given math suggests. -
its not uncommon for predators to pick stones up off of bottom when attacking prey. over a lifetime of fish keeping I have seen it regularlly the fish will hit the bait so hard they strike through it and hit bottom often picking up debris as they do. I have seen my fish burp stones up hours later its fun to watch

bucket biologist strikes again think they have all the answers end up doing more damage than they could possibly know. interesting to see them get that big in there wonder what it will do to the lake long term. if its been 15 years and it only started with a few than the population hasnt had a chance to really take off yet but with a few breeders that size it might be on the brink. hopefully the pickeral in the lake will keep the population in check but will likely mean that those that do survive have the potential to get very large in a shorter amount of time

we picked up a couple of these at the show to he claimed they had real sliver plated on them which caught my interest. I liked the video that showed the action especially at higher speed had a nice wobble flip wobble thing going that was nice and erractic. Looking forward to trying these for kings. He also said he was based out of sodus. Its nice to see local lure makers I have had much better luck with quality from local guys than bigger brands FLT and great lake lure co being the most notable two that i have used the past couple years I have high hopes for these spoons the join the regular rotation

i think as the main show grows lotsa should consider moving the marketplace to a different weekend i know they used to do it that way. there is a different feel to the marketplace and when I go to something like that i have a different set of goals of what I am looking for than at the main show. the main show had a ton of retail and was a good place to see first hand a lot of tackle that just isnt carried in the stores that I can regularly get to. That has its appeal and will likely keep me going to shows like that on occasion. That said the main show is retail there was some used and overstock but for the vendors on the main floor they are going to make far more on the full retail prices. I enjoy the flea market feel running through a box of lures to pick the ones that my my styles has a huge appeal for me and thats what i loved about the market place last year. I dont think its unfair at all to make a comment or complaint about such a thing. If negitive feedback is never recieved than how would anything ever improve? in buisness the worst thing that can happen is someone has a bad experience and says nothing to you than there is no way to make it better. Negitive feed back is an opportunity to improve. Positive feedback just reinforces what you are doing right. I am sure it is no easy thing to put on the show but LOTSA doesnt put on the whole show. They use the proceeds to help fund the pen rearing so finding ways to gain more proceeds is a good thing. seems like there were a lot more seminars this year thats a great way to promote the fishery perhaps that is a better use of resources for this particular show and it might be benificial to do a marketplace type event in the rochester area. maybe the geenese charterboat assosiation would be interested in getting involved get a different set interested parties and catch more people from the east end. would also help to break up the winter more. Just thoughts.

though my drive was only a couple hours i was also dissapointed in the marketplace compared to last year. the main show was good my brother ended up sharing fishing pics with dave genz for half an hour. Hopefully its not a trend and the market place just swings up and down from year to year.

so made it out late morning no problems coming out of the launch did not see the mentioned obstruction though. Lake was a little bumpy but not terrible. ran a couple miles south and set up on a south troll. went an hour or so without a touch and corssed over to the east side and zigzagged our way back north. the weater was nice and the boat ran well and is already to set for its winter nap over the coming week. the fish were not be be had got one very small bow as we were picking up but that was it. No releases all day did not even see anything on the fishfinder. dont know if i'll try can again i dont know if i have the paitence to learn a new fingerlake. anyways do some stream fishing and some ice time to try to keep me sane till sping browns. i'm already thinking about my game plan for them.

taking the boat out for the last time on sunday. going to finally try canandaguia for rainbows been saying it for years but has never happened. is the north end lauch still usable? I'm not real familar with it but it looks like it could be trouble with low water. I see a few of you posting reports so i'm hoping that means its fine. I'm hoping to be out there late morning. planning to run all my lines in the top 70 foot nice and spread from the boat. Do they typically like the faster speeds there as well. should be fun always wanted to spend some time on that lake but hate crowds so summer is a no go.

i would think the size of the swim bait might have just as much effect on the drop behind the ball as that produces the majority of the drag. I have thrown and trolled a lot of swim baits for pike and they tend to run at a constant depth for me. its more a matter of how long they drop before you start the retreive or the slack to troll so with rigger I would think there would not be a ton of drop. to be on the safe side if you run the same size on all your rods they will all have the same drop so should keep the seperation you set on the riggers. from there you can vary the color if you want to try differnt sizes change all the rods at once that way you can systematiclly try the different sizes at different depths. I find they are very good at locating fish quickly as the thump of the tail will pull active fish from a distance and help you to quickly key in on an area or a pattern. i have had some luck for trout casting them off the pier as well but never made the connection to put them off a rigger. i may have to try that this spring

finally got the cast off during the week and things were healing nicely so after a 9 week break finally had a chance to get the boat out. took my dad and brother down to the bay looking for a fish fry. the weather was beautiful for it. We found fish all throughout the bay. no major numbers but steady action. found we caught more keepers when drifting. seemed like keeping the bait moving was key. took home enough for a meal but nowhere near a limit. did get into a school of white perch that were a blast on the ultralights we got one that was in the pound and a half range or bigger. I kept a couple to see what they tasted like and to be honest once fried up you couldnt tell them from the perch. had a minor incedent with the pontoon charter he came up and anchored right in our drift about 10 ft down wind of us wtf. 10ft may have been an overestimate we congradulated him on his manners and didnt even need to rais our voice for him to hear us. oh well pleanty of fish in the bay so we moved on. gonna get one more trip in before i winterize now i cant decide on more perch or a fingerlakes run gotta get some fresh gas and stabil through the kicker

what did you net them with emeralds can be more sensitive to abbrasive nets and the damage can cause them to die. that said cold water can dissolve more oxygen as well as slows down metabolism causing a need for less oxygen thats why cold water is important for more sensitive species. circulation is also important these are wild minnows so they they are used to constant fresh water not like store kept minnows which have already been acclimated to captive conditions

did anyone ask about the half gill plates?

generally speaking i am very cheap the exception is the case where quality makes all the difference and spoons are one of those cases. perfect example you can get cheaper spoons than FLT's but if the paint and tape is ripped off after only one or two fish than than you have to buy it again and at that point it cost more. The quality of the paint on these is second to none. it is the only spoon that has stood up as well as the NKs of the 80s i have used other brands recently and have several blanks of each that did not start as blanks. FLT also has a nice variety of colors and sizes so you can find the patterns that work with your spreads and if ever i could give you lure advice alpha alewie

so the zebra and quaggas accelerated a process that was started by the clean water act. the fact that less untreated waste and just less waste overall means the lakes become less productive. seneca is historically (before industrilization) a low production lake. it was the excess nutrients phosphorus being a big one that caused the high levels of plankton that led to the large numbers of fish many years ago. the ecosystem has changed drastically multiple times since. clearing of the land and lots of drainage ditches full of fertilizer actually has the effect of fertilizing the lake ( which would increase the algae and thus the lowest levels of the food chain that would actully lead to increased baitfish. the mussels more than mitigate this though and even with more agriculture the overall volume of nutrient loading is way below what it once was. all this means that long lived slow growing fish tend to top the food chain and desity tends to be low. lake trout are interesting in that a healthy adult population will prey upon there own young this is one of the reasons they can thrive in low production lakes but the result is a fishery that is very vuanerable to overfishing. that is why catch and release is so big on the major lake trout lakes of the north. i think seneca is in the middle of another ecosystem change. I have not personally seen gobys there yet but i'm sure they are around. I would think there population will explode soon and probably result if a couple of years of slow fishing (lots of easy to catch food around) followed by a noted increases in fish size. i would be interested to hear from those that fish it more often especially the perch guys has anyone noticed the gobys starting to pop up yet or have they been there for a while and i'm just uninformed (possible) the lakes stocked this year could find themselfs growing up surrounded by food

From my limited knowledge the lake trout population is doing quite well and natural reproduction is up. I think this affords a great opportunity to stock more silver fish. I would go one further and even say maybe try coho or dare I say it kings I dont know if the lake could support that voracious of a predator and I know the DEC would never go for it but if its put out there I can always dream

i find that very interesting because just a few miles south in the fingerlakes lakers are reproducing quite well. To the point where in some lakes they increased bag limits and decreased stocking in an effort to prevent over population. during the memorial day derby the DEC guy at the weigh in told me they are estimating 60% of the population is from natural repro on seneca. I know they are different ecosystems but every laker i have ever cleaned out of seneca has been full of aleweye. I wonder if the water is that much cleaner and thats why they are doing better or if the nature of the lake means they are in position to eat other foods often enough to prevent thimene defficency of eggs.
