  1. Streamline what devices may be used for ice fishing by modifying the statewide regulation to allow for a total of seven ice fishing devices/lines hallelujah
  2. take up bowling I know it takes you out of the house but in a couple years you can start getting the kids into it something you can share with them in the colder months untill they build up the tolerance to ice fish. its also a great hobby to do with your wife when the kid is old enough to go to a sitter for a couple hours once a week. Trust me it wont take long before your ready for just a couple hours a week alone with the wife. first kid it may take longer to convince her but if you have a second it wont take near as long.
  3. looks good i know what you mean about low sided I mounted a board across the back for the riggers and it doubles nice as something to brace my legs against. I took up trolling again 5 years or so ago after not doing it for 15 years or so and this site helped shorten the learing curve a ton. and its always nice to find do it your selfers willing to share experiences.
  4. in this case i think its okay that it is about money the result is imporved environment and healthier more dirverse thereby more stable ecosystems and if there is money coming out of it there is reason to put money into it to keep it healthy.
  5. thun thats funny that dukedog thread came out as I was buying fittings and tube. so i had all sorts of questions for him at the time. I have a smaller boat so I thought the 1.5" would look out of place i ended up using 1" OD tube and so far it has held up very well plus there are a lot of clamp on mounts for 1 inch rail out there i tested the streangth by hanging off of it and I am not skinny it held up well so if I ever do get the money for a larger boat I'm gonna use the same set up having lots of holders up front is key to get rods out of the way when fighing and landing I used to not have enough and had to land fish around rods stored in back it led to issues.
  6. going by the ariticles the goal of the stocking program is to get them off of the threatened list. If that were accomplihed that would open them up to angling i think it would be irrisponsible to not have some sort of managment plan in place for that with a closed season and possibly catch and release only fishing. in areas outside of NY there are places where you can keep these fish and in some waters you can spear fish them through the ice. a viable fishery could be promoted and generate money for the state and dont think they wont jump on that opportunity. i dont think anybody is advocating targeting them at the moment or really anytime soon but personally i have a lot of optimisim that I will be able to target them sometime in my life time. it may be 20 years from now or longer but things are looking up and the environmental improvements that go along with there restoration will only benefit the other fish we love to target a well
  7. Thun that is exactly what I used to build my planer mast set up. I am working on upgrading it to a rocket laucher I just have to attach railmount rod holders on the cross beam. lakebound for what its worth i bought 2 of these to trial http://www.rivermarinesupply.com/xcart/catalog/product_12625_Taco_Light_Tackle_Aluminum_ClampOn_Rod_Holder.html i put them on the cross bar and they were perfect for rod storage and net holding i plan on getting 4 more to complete the set and they are well within my budget. I wouldnt run a dipsey out of them but thats not what i was looking for they are solidly built for the price and can be mounted anywhere on your arch system at an angle of your choosing. my other option is the old stand by piece of pvc and a couple hose clamps but it would be a shame to ugg up your new ride that way.
  8. two words ebay and paitence if nothing elese you'll get a good sense of what is a fair price by seeing what stuff sells for makes it easier to shop the local ads and any of the shows that go on
  9. there is a definate long term possibility of fishable populations of them around NY but it is still a way off the long slow growing nature of them is the deciding factor. incidential by catch is going up all over the state and many of the stocking efforts over the past 20 years are just now coming to a point where sexually mature fish are appearing. a couple of very strong early year classes could set up a limited season catch and release fishery in a few choice places around the state my estimate is 10-15 years. that is based on conversations with several biologist and various people with fisherys degrees. that being said i do not know that a fishable population is part of the DECs plan but there is definatly some money in one if you can get it
  10. you can get steel head in close to shore thru november just like a spring brown set up but more reds and pinks. as the water gets colder browns and lakers will move in close as well depending on how late you keep your boat going. And of course seneca is year round for the brave or mentally disturbed. weather permitting i've been out in both december and feburary on senca lots of room to fish
  11. i do almost all my fishing from late morning to early evening there are pleanty of fish to be had in the middle of the day just gotta find the active ones overall it sounds like you fished seneca lake. It has a ton of fish and can give some epic days but can shut you down with no rhyme or reason. I have been re-learning trolling over the last several years and seneca has humbled me more than a few times. listen to the guys here they know there stuff and light line is a big one better action on spoons. I like P line there are many who dont. sonner or later you'll get a program for your boat dialed in and have one of those days where its tough to get all the lines out.

    Ibay Perch

had to take a break from trolling for a bit so hit up I bay on sat 9/27 perch were everywhere ended up picking spots based on boat traffic. fished in the middle of the day and had no trouble catching. proably a 2:1 dink to keeper ratio but still kept 60 over 8 inches lots of fish in that 9-10 inch range that were real skinny but lots of meat for the fryer. also ended up with a dozen blugill in the 9-10 inch range as well found the best fishing was in 12-20 foot of water. was a nice change from trolling and easy fishing is always nice. we found the fish were in groups of similar sizes so when we caught dinks we would move or drift untill we found something bigger than stay there and get several keepers out of the spot.
  13. if nothing else i love seeing the pics of your rig. the fish storys are nice to I get such limited time on the water thats its nice to have some recent reports to at least give an idea of a plan to start with.
  14. thats funny i wait till the games are on this time of year so i can fish in front of the piers get the whole place to myself. the trick is to dvr the game and not talk to anybody not on the boat with me all afternoon. football is even better when you can fast forward commercials
  15. if you get the scales and skin under a microscope (yes i'm a bit of a science nerd) youll see there is a difference in the way the pigment is concentrated that causes this.
  16. excellent info from lakebound88 on that. the end of the jaw is always the dead giveaway when you see them next to each other youll always look to that first. another good tell is the spots a browns will be well defined and round no matter where they are on the body. With an atlantic as they get lower on the body nearer the mid line they tend to be more slash like and rough edged more marks than spots. Back in the 80s we (an uncle of mine ) would always tell guys to look for the X's in the spots once you key into it you'll see it every time.
  17. gotta love the newbie net move. i had a fish once jump and spit the hook close to the dock (jigging) and the tension in the rod caused it to swing up and around and peg me right between the sholder blades this was a 1/4 ounce lead head i felt that for days and had a bruse the size of a baseball from it. I swear that fish practiced that move. he didnt fight at all till the last second as i was getting ready to lift him up. glade you got the hook out without any major damage keep an eye on it for infection
  18. oh man I caught that in the spring when the water was 39 and had it on the grill within about 5 hours my wife did a simple rub and some fresh veggies on the side i'm dying to get another one now hopefully the spring will grant me the same forutune again next year
  19. a smaller fish is the perfect size to feed two If i'm catching fish all day and had my choice I would keep one in the 4lb range of the target species and let the rest go including the bigger ones my wife and I both like fresh fish but if i freeze it I will never thaw and eat it so there is no point in wasting it. there are some people i can give fish to if I dont think they are going to make it but thats a last resort. this spring I got a coho in the 20inch range i couldnt get that in the box fast enough everything else that day went swiming but that was the best fish meal i've had all year and I would keep another coho that size in a heartbeat. keeping smaller fish in moderation is good harvest practice keeping everything to fill a box regarless of size not so much. All that being said a put and take fishery depends on both put and take
  20. i can match that offer and throw in some kids to sweaten it
  21. whats the difference if you keep it when its 1 year 2 years or 3 years old your still keeping it before it runs the rivers if you keep it smaller that means there is less compitition for the remaining fish so they can feed easier and get bigger.
  22. the water is so cold this year and every thing is so late they didnt have to move south to stay comfy so they are just gorging on bait this year gonna be a nice class of fish for next years derby again. i wouldnt be suprised if there sneaking real shallow at night and eating panfish in numbers. looking forward to the south end winter bite got my fingeres crossed i'm gonna get several trips this year from november till march
  23. i love it when its set up there it is the closest lauch for me so i get the most time on the water. it has also produced what is for me a lake best lake trout and brown trout though i admit i get very few browns on seneca i have to get my fix of those out of i bay in the spring.
  24. this is a great place to learn If I had to start back at my first junk lines I would start with two short cores and splice in some mono between the colors that way with two rods you can run them at several differnt leanghts. they work great in the spring and can be deadly in the fall when the kings are close to shore. in the summer they can double as a swr. i started with a 10 color and will likely not own one again anytime soon I have a 3, 5 and 6 color and with the mono splices can turn the 3 and 6 into a 1 and 2 color I will always have those set ups available. this year i am experimenting with a torpedo diver to run them deeper I have had limited trials so the jury is still out. the flexability is the nice thing especially for a small boat lots of options with only one or two rods. I'm still not sold on copper i own a 300 but it sees limited use. i'm in it more for the sport and end up releasing more than I keep so the copper is not the ideal set up especially i was not able to afforde a super high speed reel.
  25. i ended up with the day off friday so sounds like a good day to go fishing. put the kid on the bus and headed to roys stayed on the west half of the lake with the wind and glad i went out. had the fist fish before i got 3 rods in the water. found schools of bait and pods of fish everywhere ended the day at 8 for 12 with the big one being 12-13 lbs. did manage to get a pair of bows into the boat one about 4-5 and the other only about 20 inches was a battle with the wind but caght fish at all depths lakers on the dipseys back 220-240 and the rigger down 60 took 5 shots including both bows. sorry no pics didnt want to clean fish today so everything got back in the water quick. now i cant decide if i wanna go back there next weekend or if i hope lake o is calm enough for me. anything white spin doc with purple flys took fish.
