so I was given a set of rods the other day by a faimly friend these are old shaksphere meat sticks that we used to snag with when it was leagl and later used to fish cod out of hampton beach. they have diawa GLS 47s on them from the 80s and they are spooled with dacron. I am thinking I can make a rig out of one not my normal type of fishing but always good to have some other options plus I love trying new things. I am going to add some 30lb to prevent fleas with a barrel swivel every 10 feet for 100 feet or so and than make up a bunch of 12lb fluro leaders. all my research I see talk of suttons and similar spoons at slow speeds. most of my box is made up of Finger lakes tackle spoons or old northern kings or some DW super slims most of those spoons run better faster. is a rig worth fishing at faster speeds say 1.8 up to 2.8 with those spoons? I really like keeping a mixed spread with a junk line or two for silver fish. or if I'm gonna try a rig should I just go all slow and if i want to run another rod put out a cowbell or a dodger on a thumper or some such? I'm just trying to cut the learning curve a bit so I have another option for days when i have a buddy or a kid with me and cant get my normal spread dialed in. especially seneca as i can usually catch something but have never had a 20 fish day. also anyone seeing fleas yet I'm going sat evening and want to know if i have to put in my top shot of 30lb on the rigger lines for the fleas

i like the dummy boards i'll take a set. i remember being anchored perch fishing once and one tried to run us over claming right of way. they got some dead perch thrown at them

i like when the yacht club has all the littlle kids in the small boats race in circles in the center of the genny right where the channel first narrows. I always feel like some parent is trying to get a couple of them run over and in general its just bad judgement to have that there especially on a busy weekend. I still refer to most of them as wind pricks and wind dicks but might have to give rag boat a try I think i have to much respect for jeeps (rag tops) though.

I will say this there is someting about homemade equipment that is satisfying to run when it works i've done a lot of manual modifications to my boat and even have a homemade mast with homemade mounts and as much as i would like to have name brand I would be perfectly happy to use the homemade stuff the rest of my life

Sounds like the same ones I have and they are going on 30 years old with no rust I think they were made from cedear though. I've never seen them filp and i've run 3 lines off a side even with two cores and a short copper. I have also run a 300 copper and a 6 color off the same side and they seem to performe consistantly the only Issue i have is sometimes when running at laker speeds under 1.9 on seneca the inside board on a turn has some issues but a touch of speed through the turn brings it right up. i would like to try otters because i would think they would skip the waves better with less bounce on the mast but they are way out of my budget.

so i may need correcting on this but the boat being overtaken always has the right of way so when the wind prick is behind you and moving faster than you they do not have the right of way this I belive also applies to the genny where I often have larger boats up my A as im heading out to the lake most get it some dont and just about run me over I shouldnt be able to touch the boat passing me with my net especially when i'm in a 14 footer and there in a 30 plus anything than they toast you with a beer and wonder why your yelling

So I got the chance to take my brother and niece out on the lake. She has never been in the boat before so i was hoping for a chance to get her into the sport. the weather was gorges but we didnt get out till 11. set everything up in the the top 30 feet because she told me on the way that all she wanted was a rainbow trout. got a hard smack on the rigger early no one home turned around and started marking some fish and my brother yells out theres one jumping took a sec for the rod to fire hand it to the nice and she pulls in a rainbow not huge but totally worth it. next thing we know we are surrounded by weeds and cotton wood and all 8 lines are craped up. in the process of clearing them she got a small salmon and we missed at least 2 hits. I broke my copper rod trying to clear cotton we finally got set up and the brother says okay we gotta turn in gotta have the kids back soon. so back to the dock we go probably worked out as we got swarmed by bugs and she was a little freaked. she wants to go again thats all i could ask for. so hopefully in two weeks we can make it a saturday and with more than a couple hours i can get her a couple fish. hope all did well in the canadaguia derby wife wouldnt let me do another full weekend so close to memorial day. Blue was the color that took the most hits.

I will say this with the runners up being as big as they were and the number of 9 and 10 pound fish that I heard about and even caught of few of there is a couple of real nice healthy year classes that are starting to get big. with the reduced stocking and higher bag limit keeping the population from stunting we may see big fish for several years to come with a continuing upward trend. getting into this derby and staring to fish the fingers is one of the only two good things that came out of me moving to geneva.

this is a great trend line of the winners I would be curious to see a similar plot but based on the average weight of the top 5 fish. this was my 5th year in the derby and it seemed like not only the winer was big but the places were really tight at the top this year lots of big fish would be interesing to see if the trend changes or becomes even more dramatic when you include multiple data points not just the largest which could be a data outlier. anyone know where to find full results from previous derbys?

back in the late eightys and early nintys when we fished the lake with my dad we never had any line heavier than 14lb on the riggers and we used no leader. breakoffs werent a problem. in flea season you need thicker line for the fleas but you can still leader down for better action on the spoons and with a smooth drag 12lb test is pretty tough to break grab a buddy have him hold the rod and you yank on the line trying to break it and leave the drag where you would if fishing if the line isnt frayd 12lb line is not gonna break without a mistake like thumbing a spool my biggest ever king (35lbs) came on 12lb test that had been on the reel for multiple seasons and had countless fish on it.

What he'll is this
ifishy replied to bobber down's topic in New York Fishing Reports - Lake Ontario (South Shore)
Bowfin the all tackle world record is only 21lbs i have seen some in that size class around the state so just another record opportunity close to home. They are also the fish that will compete most directly with the snakehead so a healthy bowfin population makes it harder for snakeheads to get established. watch you fingers though they have a nasty bite and will snap at you when taking the hook out. -

SHERIFF POSTED SPEED LIMIT TONITE ON SENECA LAKE
ifishy replied to pschauf's topic in Finger Lakes Discussion
i'm all for it with a small motor i cant break the 5mph limit anyways it would put everyone else on my level of course than there would be that much more of a crowd in the areas around the launch oh well thats whats nice about seneca you can fish right out of the gate from most launches -
i fish a 14 footer. I fish on Lake O in the spring and fall when the fish are near shore the rest of the time i'm on seneca lake or some other small body of water. pay super close attention to the weather for the couple days leading up to your trip and look at the weather for the next day incast the weather man is a little late in his timeline. It can be done but know your boat well before you tryi it

for the record collection of frogs in new york is only leagal during the open season. this includes all stages egg and tadpole. It does not currently apply to toads but toadpoles excrete a toxin that makes them very poor tasting and therefore likely bad bait. I work for a company that buys and sells frog eggs, tadpoles and adults and we have to be very aware of state regs both in new york and across the country as we ship nation wide. You can buy and posess frogs purchased from out of state year round but you have to be able to prove origin (reciept works). As far as using out of state frogs for bait? I dont have an answer, if its legal than fish supply stores and pond fish stores are potential sources as tadpoles are a common by product of koi farms.

so based on the web cam pics we decided to fish watkins well by the time I got there the wind had shifted and there was just no way we turned around and went to severen made one pass that was uncomfortable at best with no release so we switched out the gear and trolled the shorline for pike made one pass up and down caught a decent pickeral but that was it. saw a huge school of nice perch but had nothing in the boat to target them with for any real effort. I tried to talk to guys into going to naples to try there but after getting beat up by the waves I got out voated. oh well maybe one more trip before the derby
