got a chance to get out tomarrow with the strong west wind Lake O is out normally i would run right to watkins but thinking of trying something different. does anyone fish the south end of canadaguia this time of year? are all the fish still in the tribs or is it worth it. I searched old posts and there is not a lot from this time of year. just curious trying to plan tomarrows trip.

in a small boat the rod holders can often be closer togather make sure the front most rod holder is the same height or taller then the next one back for running boards. I made this mistake and it puts the inside board rod tip higher than the outside rod tip this is a disaster when a fish hits. I remember the first time i set them i looked at it and scratched my head for a few minues trying to figure out why i didnt like it than the fish hit and i knew. usually I only one one board line one dipsey and one rigger per side so i didnt notice the problem untill i was spring brown fishing the next year. P.S. my boat is only 14 foot so space is a premium a good board across the back is a wonderful thing

Lake O still has lots of smallies and the sizes are starting to approach record potential the fishing methods needed have changed the fish school tigher on smaller spots and will not move as far to eat because the have a platter of gobies at there disposal. seneca is a great lake and as a small boat owner its where i fish all summer but Lake O is no slouch and having fished it since the 80s the fishing is different but there is always good fishing there. For those that know how there is a world class walleye fishery there you just dont hear much about it.

Fishing the Canal (Rochester/Henrietta)?
ifishy replied to scramp's topic in Finger Lakes Discussion
i used to fish the canal from greece west all the time ther are a ton of smallies in there and pleanty of largemouths and even decent pike and walleye. if the kid is old enough to do it just keep walking and casting i found the fish there were not real well fed and as a result supper aggresive if there was a fish in site of te lure i would get hit on the first or second cast in every spot and if i missed one I could get it to hit again in just a few mins. small spinners or cranks are good lots of vibration and flash. I used to spot them and cast well away just to watch them charge 20 to inhale a bait. if your up for still fishing take some corn and chum there are loads of carp and if you can get them to stay in an area its a full day of fun. if your real close make a habbit of throwing a couple handfuls of corn out multiple times a week than there will always be carp around you may even get some big cats out of it. -
Sandy creek last few weeks
ifishy replied to fisherman85's topic in New York Fishing Reports - Lake Ontario (South Shore)
there is something to be said for how quickly you can re-set a line as a small boat who sometimes fishes solo there is not a lot of room to move around and when a fish is in the net it has to be squared away completely before rods go back out. this past weekend I took time before setting to get everything set where it was needed and have a plan for each rod and where it would go if a fish hit I was able to re-set much quicker as a result of having those rods in quicker let me get back in the good water quicker it also led to more hits as the rod going back out got hit in the first few mins more than once. bigger boat bigger crew one guy can set while the other cleans up and this can lead to larger numbers sometimes 6-8 fish means you spent more time fighting fish than just trolling thats not a bad thing. it also translates into fish per person 8 fish for 2 people is the same as 20 fish for 5 -
okay so my fishing partner woke up sick and couldnt go i so i was delayed and by the time i left Lake O had flatned out so I went brown fishing went 4 for 8 with a rainbow a coho and a 10lb brown. broke two off One got wraped in branch and chaffed off the line I pulled a rookie move and just cut off a foot of leader instead of replacing the whole thing and that cost me the second break off. Any way Monday is supposed to be nice I say go fish ontario spring fishing is a blast.

Cod Fishing Tips and Knot help - Tie a snelled hook to a leader
ifishy replied to carpedium's topic in Tackle and Techniques
i used to do a cod trip out of NH in june one of the things that would happen with the party boat if the currents picked up the tangles would get more common switch to one hook keeps you out of a bunch of the mess so while others are re-rigging your fishing. also braid is big I still have reel filled with dacron from those trips. Jigs are good but they are a lot of work i found i was much happier with a bait line and a beer especially after cranking fish up 400 ft all day. use to use the walmart pre made rigs never had issues catching fish untill we had a few to many beers in us -
taking kids fishing and number of rods?

nailed it -
i'm with gambler power pro is awesome I also have home made board and use to use the dacron planer line it worked but releases took a while to move. I upgraded to power pro 2 seasons ago and so far no problems i just keep a glove on the boat to pull the boards in with so i dont cut my hand

gambler that is a very intriguing idea and very reasonably thought out which unfortunatly is not something that NY is known for. it would be nice to see greater DEC presense but that is probably not going to happen anytime soon with our current budget. there are special regulations all over the state for differnet fisherys and the precedence in the streams is already there to have special regs in certian sections. this combined with some key habitat restoration might be a way to win all the way around by protecting fish when they are most concentrated but also allowing for the promtion of trib fishing which brings a lot of money in and puts a lot of attention on fisherys and attention can be a good thing the squeaky wheel gets the greese.

state of mind can have a wonderful healing effect hopefully the draw of open water and the warming weather will help lead to a sucessfull recovery.

justtracy i think you said it far more eloquently than I did I was limited to shore fishing for many years and saw many unethicle fisherman. However I also met many very skilled fisherman who can and do do as much or more for the fishery than many lake fisherman. I dont think they should be punished because of some people lack of respect for regs. I have seen boat fisherman keep illegal fish and out of season fish and over there limit just because someone has the money to buy the bigger toy doesnt guarentee there a better person

so i'm all for catch and release and sportsmanship. when i was a kid snagging was legal for salmon in the fall. i was a lifter after that for years and have since learned far better habits and now rarely stream fish because i'm lazy and hate crowds. that being said is stocking really that terrible of a thing? rainbows are not native to seneca and are only there because of stocking in the 20s. If stocking imporves the population it could increase noteriety which will increase fishing hours and thereby bring more money into local economys and put more pressure on to preserve the fishery which is really the ultimate goal. That being said lake trout stocking is being reduced to prevent stunting so maybe that money should be used to stock rainbows? heck we could go big picture and hope the increased popularity leads to a hatchery (my wishful thinking) which could have far reaching benefits. if we increase the number of sportsman fishing it ultimatly improves the area and limits the ability of lifters and poachers. As a side note ecosystems are dynamic things that change regularly so it should be expected that populations may have to to supplimented to keep consistent numbers and on the other side they may have to be occasionaly culled like lake trout in keuka. i'm not trying to support those that lift snag or herd and I certainly am not trying to bash anyone here . I am however tying to offer a different perspective and say that banner trib fishing can if properly managed actully be a long term benefit.

had to tried stoped at the chamber in geneva and decided it wouldnt be worth the drive south the wind was due north so we fished out of there hoping there might be some browns or maybe a bow in the mud plumes form the creeks. fishing was cold and all we caught was one big pickeral couldnt find more than 1 degree gemp difference and i dont know how many trout use those creeks to begain with oh well the boat ran nice andi got all the equipment ready for the year. maybe the weather will play nice and my next trip out can be Lake O

no lies there i was out with my step son at the north end a couple years ago anchored on the dropoff trying to jig and use bait. wind turned south and within a few mins waves were starting to crash over the bow. we pulled anchor and got out quick was a great leason to teach him to always keep on eye on whats going on around you.

i hear you on the iffy weather my last check put it at NW 12 mph i know if its west enough i can fish the west side no problem but if it turns north i gotta go. I only get a chance to get out evey other weekend so i'm going one way or the other if the water is completely unfishable i will go icefishing i'm just sick of drilling holes. I always have a back up plan but sometimes real time reports are the best intellegence to have. we'll have to see what its like tomarrow at noon when i'm ready to leave and i'll pick which gear to load than.
