Meat rigs/cutbait:What's your take? (Discussion)
ifishy replied to Sk8man's topic in Tackle and Techniques
i did some searching on google and it seems like the strips are hard to come by and a bit pricey are there sellers that i'm missing or local retails. I definatly have an interest and will have to experiment on seneca this summer. the rockets look like there right up my ally but the thought of soaking the stips in my own brine sounds fun to get to play with a recepie. I saw on another thread about using belly meat from a kept fish. I like that option as well. when running on a spin doctor do you have to have the bait rotaing in the same direction as the blade or the oppiset or doesnt matter same for bigger paddles? i have a protroll that i think might work well -

I am interested in trying cut bait or even the fake version next year i like to try ot learn a new technique every year. however i mostly fish the finger lakes does anyone every have much luck on fish other than salmon? I think the slow speed roll would be good for lakers but the target on Lake O is usually kings any of your finger lakes guys out there use cut bait. any of you lake o guys take a hit only to come up with a trout of some type. is there a smaller version that might appeal to LLs on seneca? -

i was on a charter in the keys as a kid we caught a bunch of dolphin when we go to the dock i asked the captin if he ever missed while he was putting fish on the spikes for pictures. he said never in 20 years and than 5 mins later missed and threw one off the dock his mate (who was his son) yelled "jump in" and he did. he got the fish back and while down there cleaned off some scum from the bottom of the boat we still have the pic of him standing next to my brother dripping wet holding a sock infront of the board of fish. my dad sent him an 8x10 a couple years later we were on his boat again and he had the pic displayed. -

i know the white sturgeon in the pacific jump and these sturgeon jump when not hooked my buddys pulled and dogged to the bottom I gotta imagine when they get over 100 pounds it has to be a decent fight even if they just try to hug bottom. i'm just glade the DEC continues to work these kind of restoration projects as well as the gamefish stockings it will only serve to improve the overall health of the waters a diverse eco system is a resilant ecosystem
-
Tg8 how dare you dampin my optimisium with your science. still i know the stocking in the genny several years back had some good success my buddy caught one about 4 feet long a couple years back and he dec did a survey that showed good numbers surviving. I've seen them caught in the seneca river and i know onieda lake has a good population. Interestingly black lake has a small but very big (size) population and i recently discovered that they have lampreys in there thogh they dont seem to explode in numbers. so i still have hope for cayuga I know they had a huge year class of lampray this year hopfully they will get most of them in the traps and there wont be any flooding this spawning season
-
i seem to remember sombody wanting to buy lamprys to sell for sturgeon bait if they truly do pray on those blood suckers these little guys could thrive in cayuga id love to see a viable sport (catch and release) fishery for them in new york in my life time people would be a huge draw for tourism and put more money in the conservation fund if cumo lets the dec spend it

always good to help when you see a boater in distress in my life ive given 3 tows and once went in to get a camp owner to help out a stranded boater on black lake (offered tow they declined but asked us to get owner). when my turn came and our engine stalled out 2 miles from the dock someone was nice enough to stop there day and tow us in so karma is definatly worth it.

making me debate this sunday if i wanna take one last trip to the genny for kings or if wanna try canandagia finally i did watkins glen last winter and it was rewarding. so i'm looking forward to winter fishing on the chosen spot this year just dont know if i wanna start this weekend or in three weeks on my next trip

the challange is always fun and jumbo perch are a prize worth finding but part of the process is knowing what it take and what you have available and to find jumbos on seneca takes time and practice and I just dont have the time i've fished lake O bays since i was old enough to walk and so can usually find action i've only lived in teh finger lakes about 7 years so just dont have the time in on seneca. like justtracytrolling said some lake / species combos are tougher than others seneca perch is one of them there size is why its worth the work if you have the time to put in. if you dont than you gotta maximize what time you do have and that means change water or species i started trolling trout because seneca is close and convenient and that species in that lake has a better learning curve for the time i have
-
if your new to seneca perch and you dont have the time to fish regularly my advice is go to sodus i only get out on weekends and have spent many many hours of my life chasing perch and have at least the basics down. even though the last couple years i have concentrated on trolling trout. that being said i have never done well for perch on seneca and have come to the conclusion that seneca just has to big of a learning curve for perch for the limited time i have. i have gotten them on canandaguia as well as I-bay sodus portbay in lake O and cayuga. seneca is the only place i have never had a good perch day. I know there there i just dont have enough days to dedicate to that lake. if and when my scedual changes and i can fish a couple times a week i will definatly try the challange again but as i said at the begining best advice for perch on seneca drive north till you hit sodus

it can be done quite well its real shallow so you have to have a smaller boat fish the creek channels or the flats around the docs trolling works but if you have an electric its better. its a long drive for me now but used to do it a couple times before ice in every year.

will a romer stick on the braid if you wanna do a double stack or will it slide up if you try to tighten the rod down? i will say i switched to 150lb power pro for my boards this year and I like it way better than the 300lb dacron i was using made me start to think about the riggers

its a combo of the browser the OS and the website sometimes to many different softwares just cant communicate just right thats one of the reasons a lot of sites now have the navagation directory on them as well there are a few websites like this for me
-
i run a 14 foot two when i fish alone i'll still run 3 usually dipsey down rigger and a core to keep them spread but when i have a fishing buddy well run 6 all the time its g cool site to all those rods running on a 5 foot beam boards and cores are a wonderful thing

i agree in order to get the biggest lakers you have to have a healthy population size and low fishing pressure or increased catch and release pressure will help to increase the size but forage definatly plays a large role as well and gobys have become a new part of that equation. they have replaced the sculpin for the most part in the ecosystem but there numbers are far higher and by there nature they are easier prey which is part of why there tendancy is to reproduce rapidly. an easy abundent prey source will serve to help increase the overall size structure of any species that feeds on them readily. Lake trout are not fast growers so it will take time but provided the numbers stay decent and they are not overfished you will see increases in size possibly dramatic ones. as an example i say look at smallmouth. they grow much faster and there are more 4-6 lb fish than ever fishing for them has changed but the numbers and size dont lie.
