    Catfish

there are no blue catfish in the genny they do not live in NY there are channel cats and some big ones there are also stinging catfish which only get to a couple pounds. cut bait and commercial catfish bait work very well for them deep holes catch fish as well as log jams if you can find them. if your shore bound just keep trying the farthur upstream the better in the spring and summer if your getting some small ones that means your in a decent area try some shiners cut in half you will get fewer small fish but will get some brutes. nite is best but if your in the right spot you can get them during the day.
  4. i cant wait gonna de-winterize the boat for next sunday and take my brother out there i definatly am into this whole winter fishing thing
  5. gotta love the gar pike very underated fish
  6. i can tell you fishing the finger lakes it matters espeically when the fish are up high down deep I could see the argument but even than how many times do fish follow for a time than swim off or bite dont you think seeing the line at that point might affect a fish? in the old days when i fished with my dad pre zebra muscle it didnt matter these days I think it can make a difference and the shallower the fish are the biggger the difference.
  7. cant go wrong with PLine i use it for leaders on my tip ups for pike without issue and have been using it since i got back into trolling and works great
  8. where is smith park if the weather allows i would love to get out again
  9. in the report on the first link the last line under projects there putting a camera in at the hatchery fish ladder? I would love to see that become a web cam one of these days i'm gonna convince my wife to take a weekend trip to see the hatchery and fish the river in the fall.
  10. If i could i would im praying for really cold now would be fun to ice fish out of watkins [ Post made via Android ]
  11. i was supprised to only see one other boat out and he was perch fishing the weather was gorgeous almost makes me wish for a no ice year i like this winter trolling thing but my tip ups didnt get wet this year so i can hear them in the basement screaming for action.
  12. boat size and style makes a difference smaller boats where you can reach the stern over a board the board is a nice option because of weight distribution as the boat gets larger gunnel mounts are more and more appealing what make and model boat do you have maybe some one with a similar model will be able to give you some feedback on what theve done.
  13. Made it out christmas eve even got the stepson to go with me. Took the drive to Watkins set out right out of the channel didnt get all the lines in before we had our first midget LL in got a double on one rod a minuet later and steady hits from then on got about a mile north of the plant and turned back. As the day went on the fish got a little bigger ended up with a 24" laker a 22" rainbow and a pair of 22" land locks plus several salmon and bows up to 18 inches made for a fun day at least every lure took hits even the flasher fly DW SS bloody death on a 4 color core took the most and the biggest bow the way the fishing was turning i should have started late and fished till dark as they wer definatly getting bigger as the day went on. All fish were released for the next trip we did get two fish with lamprays on them first for me out of seneca this year both were small 10 inch lampreys and floated away nicely in multiple pieces it worrys me to see them on those little fish like that though. Hope the weather stays warm enough i can keep the boat running for another winter trip or two.
  14. plans changed for the better wife wants me to go tomarrow in stead so i guess i gotta shovel the rest of the driveway so i can get the boat out.
  15. i get one chance everyother week to go fishing one way or the other i'm going out calling for west winds could potential fish west side of seneca would launch out of clute but will probably not take boat out with bad roads and snowed in driveway worst case some of the small tribs are pretty sheltered just have to deal with the crowds which i hate doing
  16. yeah i'm seeing that i might end up shore fishing or breaking out the waders and going to a trib (lake O) but given the chance i would rather troll
  17. nice report i'm hoping to get out sunday if the weather and roads allow for it.
  18. oh well time to bust out the moonshine
  19. wonder what the waves will be like
  20. given the size of the lakers that show up on the boards you think they would want to promote the fishery how many places in the world can you catch a 30lb laker? as far as protecting the species i think i remember there shorting brown trout and salmon as well due to disease issues and random thought why do they only get lakers from VT why dont they get any from the finger lakes hatcheries? there is an overpoulation in a couple different fingers (keuka) to the point where they upped the creel limit so they could lessen stocking to suppliment lake O
  21. was there on sunday found much of the same my smallest fish came on a wire dipsey back 300 so the small ones were everwhare
  22. i've never tried the chamberlins but as far as ball color i have an opinion. I run two fish shaped weights one is dark green with a white belly the other is (was) bright orange powder coat. over the last couple years one downrigger has consistently taken more fish. now this finally hit me when two weeks ago that rigger had the handle broke when i was out alone so i switched to the orange one and didnt have another hit the rest of the day (i had a dipsey out as well that was also quite). so I thought for an experiment i would spraypaint the weight black and see what happened. I went out sunday and both riggers took fish all day and in close to equal number for the first time ever. now thats the only day so far that I've fished with the painted rigger but in my mind i think it makes a difference.
  23. i debating if i can push it another two weeks and take it out once more. the garage isnt heated so its tough to say
  24. yeah weatherman called for 10+ mph west wind i figured we would have to hug the shore all day but it was dead calm we could have fished anywhere we wanted to. good luck with the sale and the new boat hopefully in the spring i will be in the market for a little bit larger aluminum myself I would like one in the 18' range.
  25. so had the chance to fish today weatherman said west wind chance of snow didnt want to risk getting stuck on the hill at severen so took the chance and went to watkins. lake was flat fishing was decent boated 9 one rainbow around 20 inches the rest LLs up to 18 inches pretty consistent action and a lot of short hits on the free sliders. everything took hits but orange was the top producer mostly spoons but the rainbow and one salmon were on flasher fly. The graph was full of fish and bait all day. caught fish from the surface to 90ish down tried to get deep to get under the small ones and still hit small ones. I dont know if there wanst any bigger fish around or if they just couldnt get to the bait. was supprised to see i had the lake completley to myself I thought there was a whole group of people that fished through the winter. Oh well if I can figure out how to keep the boat ready i'll be back out if not i'll be in the tribs till the ice comes in.
