I have heard a lot of good things about the NBK spoon and the mirage fly. I will have to geyt a bunch of those. I started kinda late in the season so nothing seamed to work well for me.

I meant to add the best lures for trolling. Thanks for any info.

I am going to be gearing up for next season soon, (you can never be too early and now is the best time for deals) and I was just wondering what you guys had for hot lures that worked well. I am wondering about the best colors of j-plugs, spin doctor and flie combos, and spoons. Thanks for any info.

First Timer - Couple Questions
bluewater replied to mshowers's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
As long as you stay in the harbor (between the break walls) and in the river you should be ok. I would not go out past the lighthouse unless its calm. It usually is nice in the harbor regardless of the weather due to the break walls. I have not had much luck in the harbor this year but I would try j-plugs and trolling spoons. I like michigan stinger spoons. I would try about 30-40 feet behind your boat. Good luck. -
Just curious if anyone was fishing the lake out of Oswego anymore. The last few times I had my boat out I was pretty much alone except for 1 or 2 other boats. Is anybody catching anything anymore?

Fishing Report Your Name / Boat Name: ============== TRIP OVERVIEW ============== Date(s):10-4-09 Time on Water:8hrs Weather/Temp:60's Wind Speed/Direction:west wind Waves: 3 to 4 feet Surface Temp:about 59 Location:Oswego LAT/LONG (GPS Cords): =============== FISHING RESULTS =============== Total Hits: 1 Total Boated:1 Species Breakdown:Steal head Hot Lure: michigan stinger green/orange Trolling Speed: 2.5-2.9 Down Speed: Boat Depth: 30-80 FOW Lure Depth: 25-40 FOW ==================== SUMMARY & FURTHER DETAILS I fished all morning sunday. I started in the harbor I marked several fish in the morning but could not get anything to hit, so I thought I would head out to deep water and hooked one very nice steelhead on my way out in about 45 feet of water. There were tons of fish in the 45-60 FOW mark but the weather got bad (waves) and I had to head back to the harbor, I never got a chance to try deep water but with all the fish I marked I don't think I will need to head deep. I will definetly be out once more to try it again. ====================

Thank you very much Skipper for the detailed information. I will be out all weekend and trying that. It will probably be my last good chance to fish for the year. -

Thanks for the info Gambler, I will hook up my fish hawk this weekend to find the thermocline. -
I was wondering if anyone was still fishing for stealhead and juvenile kings out in deep water. If so what depth and what are you using to catch them? I was told they were out in 450-500 FOW but I have not tried it yet, I plan to this weekend though. I was planning on using spin doctors and flies but If something else works better please let me know. Thanks for any info.

No luck in Oswego once again
bluewater replied to bluewater's topic in New York Fishing Reports - Lake Ontario (South Shore)
Thanks for the information, I just got my carb tuned today so I shouldn't have any more problems getting my speeds down. I figured that was probably the reason why I couldn't catch anything. I want to try fishing a few more times this year before I put it up. -

I tried j-plugs and spin doctor fly combo with no luck once again for the second week in a row. I have not heard of any good run in Oswego yet but thought I would try. Does anyone have any suggestions because I'm out of them for Oswego. Is the salmon fishing done in Oswego for the year? I thought maybe this rain we had today might have triggered a run but it does not appear that way. ====================

I am just unlucky or am I completely clueless
bluewater replied to fletch's topic in Tackle and Techniques
I will second that with a #4 hook and a small float like a bobber to keep it up it works well with me. Be sure and put a few split shots on above the egg sack at least 6 to 12 inches if the current is bad. I prefer to use egg sacks with no float in the sac I like the action better. -
It depend on how deep the water is that your fishing in but I usually like to put a couple split shot sinkers about 18 inches or so above a egg sac then use some sort of float like a small bobber to keep it suspended about 6 to 12 inches of the bottom. It keeps you from getting tons of snags and I have always got many more strikes that way. Give it a shot and good luck.

What color and size j-plugs should I use and how do you rig them?

Oswego fishing
bluewater replied to bluewater's topic in New York Fishing Reports - Lake Ontario (South Shore)
Sorry to here about your troubles. Last year me and a friend of mine got a ten pound ball stuck at the bottom in 80 FOW it took us a very long time to get it out. I think I will be all done for the year after this weekend myself it seems like unless you get in the water with waders at the dam I won't be catching any more fish this year and I'm not a fan of that. I'm looking forward to next year hopefully the season will extend a little longer. -
Just wondering if any of you guys use cut bait for salmon any more around the oswego area I was gonna try it this coming weekend but not sure if I should bother. I used to use it years ago and it worked well. What is the best way to rig it, If it still works?

Thanks a lot. I just got a new boat and thought I would try it but I know its probably a little late in the year and I have heard that most of the salmon have moved to the Mexico area due to cool water temps. Thanks again and let me know how you do, I plan to be out all this weekend coming up. -
