Take the charters to get your fix. The charter boats will put you right into the fish. I know people who have shared fishing gear or fixed up hunting camps. If there is ever a falling out, it can be really messy especially if you spent a lot of your money to fix up someone elses boat. Bottom line is just remember whose name is on the title for the boat.

DEC reports that walleyes are caught in Hemlock year after year probably by those trolling for trout. I bet those are the best tasting because the water quality is excellent. I also caught a small one (maybe 7 or 8 inches) ice fishing in Cranberry Pond a few years back.

I have a 15 foot aluminum arkansas traverler (deep V) which has benn modified into an open bow fishing boat complete with fishing seats and a wood floor (so it is heavy but very stable). I use it to fish all over: from trolling Lake Ontario for Spring browns to bass fishing on horspower restricted lakes so I have a Johnson 9.9 tiller from the mid-1970's. The Johnson does about 10 mph with two adults in the boat and 14 mph when I am by myself. There is nothing wrong with the Johnson 9.9 except it is an old 2-stroke from the 1970's. Since I rebuilt the transom I plan on keeping the boat for many years, I'm thinking of buying a new 9.9 for it (although I did consider putting in the carb to make the current Johnson a 15 hp). The queston is what 9.9 to go with? Hondas weigh the most and are the most expensive. You have the Nissan/Tahutsu/Evinrude (nothing more than rebranded Tahutsu) are the lightest, but I don't know much about them. Mercury which you can pick up in February or March when BassPro has them on sale. Yamahas are out there. Not many Suzuki dealerships are around. Which ones should I seriously look at? Is there a huge difference in noise and gas consumption when compared to the old 2-strokes? Any ideas would be appreciated.

I know someone who ate a walleye caught off the Summerville pier. He said it tasted like the river and threw it away. Not like the good ones from Oneida or Erie.

Sodus 8/16 --BUSTED!

Surprised the border patrol didn't show up to look for illegal Canadians trying to get in and use are health care system. -
Is there any depth charts for snap weights? I know a few years back there was a Percission Trolling book also known as the Trollers Bible which had charts for snap weights and various other crankbaits and walleye baits, but the book is out of print.

One last thing to remember is water clarity. Port Bay is often stained like black coffee or as green as the Genesee River. Sodus and Little Sodus is usually clear. Also the smallmouth fishing in Lake Ontario has gone straight down the tubes. A decade ago there would be two dozen boats outside each of those bays fishing for smallmouth. Ever since the goby invasion, the locals don't even bother.

The Genesee River is the same way. There is a dedicated group that catches Walleyes off the Summerville pier every May. For better tasting ones that wern't swimming in the Genesee, I went to Sodus and caught some. Now to answer the original question, There are some dedicated walleye fisherman that are targeting the large schools of walleyes in Lake Ontario in the summer especially by the Genesee River. They are fishing with downriggers and copper and are out there with with the salmon boats. Everyone thinks they are salmon fishing. Can they be targeted over by Oak Orchard? Probably.

Sodus, Port Bay and Little Sodus (Fair Haven) are similar in the sense you can fish them similarly because of all the cottages which have docks. When the bite is on Port Bay can be a lot of fun because the cottages (and docks) are more condensed. In my opinion, Sodus tends to have a more dynamic fishery because it is so much larger than the other major bays. There are just more places to fish. Don't forget the creek channels, the islands, and the flatts. If you want to tick people off, I've heard people fishing the sailboats in the marinas. Little Sodus also has a lot of fish and docks. Hit those coves on the East side. Blind Sodus should be an afterthought. If you're crazy you could hit East Bay, but the weeds are crazy and the bay is shallow. People also catch pike in Sterling Pond if you have a small boat. For me the deciding factor is often how choppy is the lake and how much gas you want to burn. From Little Sodus: Port Bay is 7 miles west, Sodus is just under 14 miles west, Oswego is maybe 10 miles East. If fishing the docks hit them with senko style worms wacky style or the edge of the weedbeds that are right in front of the docks. Use a spinnerbait when traveling between the docks along the outside of the weedbeds. You can also try a jighead with a twister tail with a colorado spinner attached to the jighead. The best times are the crack of dawn and the evening. You can also try topwater frogs in thick vegetation and don't forget a popper if the topwater bite is on. - Good luck!!!

Is there a chart or general formula to estimate the depth of the downrigger ball while trolling? I understand the faster you troll the greater the blowback and the most acurate way is to put a probe on the downrigger ball. Without spending hundreds of dollars for something I do only several times a year, is there a general estimate for how much blowback you get while trolling.

If you have a small boat you could try Sterling Pond which is inside Fairhaven State Park.

I saw four gars while out fishing over the weekend. They would not hit any spinnerbait or buzzsbaits which I was using for bass and pike. What is the best way to catch a gar? They are on my bucket list.

Is the channel for Blind Sodus Bay open or closed?
-
Buzzbaits when they are shallow and on their beds.

Usually the walleye bite is hot this time of the year off the Summerville pier. Just don't eat them. They taste how the river smells.

Could it be that air got into or is in the system because the boat has been out of the water and if so would going iin reverse prime the livewell system by getting the air out?
-
I've noticed after the last few winters and one time last summer (when I had not used the livewell for a few weeks) it seems it doesn't want to work (pump water into the livewell). Usually then out of the blue it seems to work correctly. Is this a common issue with livewell pumps which have not been used regularly?
-
Thanks your probably right. When I replaced the rotted transom, I'm sure the new one weighs quite a bit more now.
-
No its not a cavitation issue because the problem did not exist 2 weeks ago. The motor seemed to not want to rev up into the higher rpms.

I have a mid-70's johnson 9.9 2-stroke. I have no issue starting it up or keeping it running. The problem started yesterday when it did not seem to want to speed up. Yesterday it went only 6 mph. I switched the plugs and took it out again today. Again it only went about 6 mph until I shifted weight in the boat and moved myself about 4 more feet forward to keep the bow down. The outboard then sped up to 16 mph. I repeated this about a dozen times today and whenever I shifted my weight forward the engine sped up to 16 mph. Also the bow did not porpoise yesterday because of an extra person in the front. The gas is fresh and the carb was cleaned about 2 months ago. Could the fuel pump be going bad? Any ideas?

Oswego, but it can get crowded

Your favorite VHF chanel in the Fair Haven area

Which one is the coast guard channel in case of an emergency? -
Don't skimp out on the trolling motor. Go 24 volt.

If Irondequoit passes an ordinace or law that says you can not ba anchored withen 400 feet from shore on Lake Ontario, what does that mean if you wnat to drop anchor to go fishing for smallies? Can they actually enforce that and/or what will the DEC say?
