I only use my big planer boards for slower speeds on Lake Erie for walleye.I tried using them once on Chautauqua Lake for muskies and hit weeds once and had one board roll under and cross 2 lines in a tangled mess.So from that point on I use Church tx-44 in line boards, you will not get as far from the boat, do not need a release, but they will still catch those fish out to the side.Only advantage I see to the bigger planer boards is that you can run multiple lines spread apart.I never run more then 4 lines most of the time and will use in line Church tx-44 planer boards to add 2 lines more then 4 flat lined with Leadcore, using power braid on the board lines.Again this just what I do, I know Ivan is very successful using big boards and so are others. My fishing style of sharp turns making one Leacore towed crankbait on the inside flutter down and the outside rise and speed up just can't be done while I'm using planer boards, can't turn sharp enough.Good luck getting your big planer boards running far out and not plowing water with bigger crankbaits, you may need to add weight at the back of the boards to keep them from plowing to deep in the water at high speeds, they will dive under waves if plowing to low at the front. Also a taller planer board mast will help you get your boards out from the boat more.

The boats out of Dunkirk yesterday with the National Writers Assoc.did good straight out front to 85 ft of water. One boat caught 11 walleyes.

You really should be using at least 65 lb power braid,Preferably 80 lb.I use 60 lb test Leadcore line with 80 lb Fluorocarbon Leader.25 to 50 lb Mono leaders your asking for a bite off.I tried 36 lb 7 strand wire years ago and had a couple break offs and never used it again.Your Downrigger rods will work, just get a 300 yard spool of 80 lb Power Pro and use 150 yards on each reel with the mono as backing.I would buy either 5" Tuff Shad or Baker Bait in gold color from Mike Sperry's store or go on ebay and purchase a Wiley 5 2/2" Jtd in natural perch or golden brown perch color.Troll between 4 to 4.5 mph.

There were a total of 6 water spouts,2 were huge! The main reason we caught no walleyes was because we trolled all the way out from the 1st mtn Past Purina north toward Canada about 9 miles out to get on the other side of those water spouts.Today Eastern Lake Erie Charter Boat Association hosted taking national sports writers out of Dunkirk walleye fishing, I do not have a report yet, but will post the results once I find out.

Help trolling big sticks
mostlymuskies replied to pro-fish-n-c's topic in Musky, Tiger Musky & Pike (ESOX)
I'm with Ivan on this one, I have medium tension as well, just loose enough if the fish decides to run no hooks get bent out.The only time I use a loose drag is late in the winter when trolling under 2.0 mph, where they can swim up latch on, feel the tension and let go without every getting hooked up, loose drag then let's them swim off to the side with the crankbait , then you set the hook.I never set the hook at 3 to 4.5 mph, if they are not hooked from boat movement and weight of the leadcore,They would not be still hooked up when you grab the rod! -
Get the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Vessel Inspection and when they run your vessel numbers they will see you passed inspection and will normally pass you by.The fish & wildlife officer will usually ride along side at a distance as you show them your valid fishing license.

Thanks for the kind words.I will only get to Chautauqua Lake a few times again this year, I have moved back close to home guiding on the Niagara River.I will post reports of what I have done on Chautauqua Lake for the other times I get there this year and will also report on the Niagara River & Lake Erie Fisheries. It was a tough decision shutting down Mostly Muskies Charters website and message board, but with Social Security earnings limit, I had to move to part time guiding!

Went back out to 105 ft north of Dunkirk Harbor this morning for Lake Erie Experience.Spent the first hour dodging water spouts.I only managed silver bass in the 3 hours of trolling. Some of the other boats caught 2 to 3 walleye each west of the harbor in 100 ft of water.
-
I know east of Barcelona Harbor in 85 ft the best bite has been 8:30 to 11:30 in the morning.I will be out of Dunkirk tomorrow morning I will let you know how the morning bite is west of there.

We did not do well on Sunday, only 16.45 lbs, we dropped from 2nd place down to 28th place out of 100 teams.I would have liked to have finished in the final money just as everyone would, but to show up respectable with a Day Two 2nd Place and be in the position to win, I'm happy with our effort even with the last day meltdown.

I also will usually support the little tackle shops first when ever I can, but when you need an item that the little tackle store either can't get or will take longer to get then you can wait, then I go to the big box store.Cabela's was a little pricey on most items that I looked at yesterday afternoon, but they did have a very good selection of everything from fishing, hunting, camping, clothing etc..

I don't know what the total pay outs were, we got $781 for 2nd days weight of 25.17 lbs in 2nd place .
-
Today we fished the 1st day of the North Chautauqua Conservation Club Walleye Tourney, we did not find the bigger eyes but caught our limits. We only came up with 20.68 lbs for our 3 Biggest walleye, puts us in the middle of the pack heading into day 2.Most of our fish came from 100 ft of water down 70 ft Northeast of Dunkirk.

When we sent in the net order to Pradco they started a week long warehouse inventory the same day. This has put all orders placed for every product Pradco has sold in delay, that is why it has been a couple weeks already. They are packing the net order finally, because it involves a high volume of nets it will ship by truck delivery, this will take 4 to 5 days from Alabama. When the nets arrive I will contact each person and make delivery arrangements.

I remember at 15 years of age I got a job on a salmon trawler going out of LaPush,Wa to Bristol Bay Alaska. As we cleared the mouth of the Hoh river and reached the first ocean swells they were very long diration slow 30 ft swells.I got so sick that I thaught the end was coming. The Captian said chew on ice and look accross the horizon we will return from Alaska in 4 weeks. The beef & gravy Swanson's TV Dinner just helped keep me sick as well. After two days I came around and have never been sea sick ever agian.I spent time as a recon marine putting the knees to the breeze and ran 132 ft freezer shrimp boats from Key West to Guyana S.A. through some very rough Gulf of Mexico storms as well. Some people can just put a rubber band on their wrist and they are ok. Others you wonder why they even booked a fishing charter,it can be flat like glass, not even any water movement and they are sick, usually when the fish bite is good as well.
