  1. Important Chautauqua Lake SAVMP / Chemical Weed Control Meeting April 18th Area residents are encouraged to attend an update and public participation meeting on the Submerged Aquatic Vegetation Management Plan (SAVMP) for Chautauqua Lake, to be held from 6:00 – 8:00pm, Thursday April 18th, at the Chautauqua Institution Golf Course Club House. The SAVMP is being developed to expand upon the techniques to manage the nuisance aquatic vegetation that impairs recreational, environmental, and economic resources in Chautauqua Lake. Once completed, the Plan will consider the location and type of man's uses, areas of excessive weed growth, and where the conflicts between man's uses and the weeds occur. It will then identify sensitive areas and will prescribe reasonable and practical management alternatives that are practical and implementable for the control of aquatic vegetation. Please contact Jeff Diers, Chautauqua County Watershed Coordinator, if you have any questions regarding ongoing projects in Chautauqua Lake and throughout the County at [email protected]. Best regards, Jeff Diers Watershed Coordinator Submerged Aquatic Vegetation Poses Threat In 2013 April 2, 2013 By Remington Whitcomb ([email protected]), The Post-Journal Save | Comments (2) | Post a comment Just like electricity, invasive species follow the path of least resistance. To ensure the lake stays healthy, the Chautauqua County Department of Planning and Economic Development is asking for the public's help in stopping the movement of invasive species. To help the public learn how it can help, a public participation meeting on the Submerged Aquatic Vegetation Management Plan for Chautauqua Lake has been scheduled for April 18 from 6-8 p.m. at the Chautauqua Institution Golf Course Club House. All area residents are encouraged to attend. "The management of Chautauqua Lake proved to be challenging in 2012 due to low water levels and excess nutrients that led to extensive aquatic plant growth and algal blooms," said Jeff Diers, Chautauqua County watershed coordinator. "Both of (these circumstances) had significantly impacted lake recreational activities. "The summer of 2012 also held new challenges," continued Diers," as water chestnut a highly invasive aquatic plant, was identified in Chautauqua Lake, further complicating management efforts. Water chestnut was identified near both the Bemus Creek area, and the mouth of the Chadakoin River of Chautauqua Lake." Diers stated that invasive aquatic plants such as curly leaf pondweed and Eurasian watermilfoil have been present at nuisance levels in Chautauqua Lake for decades as well. However, an invasive species of much greater concern, Hydrilla verticullata, was discovered in North Tonawanda Creek, which is less than 80 miles from Chautauqua County. Hydrilla verticullata is considered to be the most noxious invasive aquatic plant in the United States. The SAVMP will expand upon the techniques to manage the nuisance aquatic vegetation that impairs recreational, environmental and economic resources in Chautauqua Lake. Once completed, the plan will consider the location and type of the community's uses, areas of excessive weed growth and where the conflicts between the community's uses and the weeds occur. It will then identify sensitive areas and will prescribe reasonable and practical management alternatives that are implementable for the control of aquatic vegetation. Don McCord, Department of Planning and Economic Development senior planner said that an emergency action plan to prevent invasive species becoming established in the lake is being developed in tandem with the comprehensive and integrated SAVMP. The plan is currently under development by the CCPED, the Chautauqua Lake Management Commission, Cedar Eden Environmental LLC, EcoLogic LLC, and Pashek Associates. For more information, contact Diers at [email protected] We will be present voicing our disproval of the use of Chemical Weed Control and ask for Selective Cutting & Checker Board Cutting of key weedbed areas.
  2. Those who ordered Nets, I recieved your checks and the order will be placed Friday morning. Many thanks to those who participated in the LOU Beckman Net Deal for 2013,I will bring it back again in the spring of 2014.
  3. Without the swivel the fish can twist the line when rolling. The swivel will catch floating weeds that ride down your line and the lure is still clean to catch fish.Knots tied from one type line to powerbraid are not as strong as powerbraid tied with a Polymar knot to a swivel.I also use Fluorocarbon leaders in 80 or 100 lb test.
  4. Since the interest in Nets this year is very low, I will end the Net deal at noon today.Anyone who contacts me by noon today can still get in on one of the two Net Orders. Thanks to those who have comitted to purchase Nets so far.
  5. Today, 100's of Northern Pike and a few Tiger Muskies from the bridge up to the spillway. The other clearwater creek up the road was packed with 100 or more Walleye's of 7 to 9 lb class. Disapointing was the number of Rudd also present, did someone use them as bait and infested Conesus Lake with them?
  6. Join the NY Muskies Inc. Chapter 69 at tonights meeting and get a free crankbait. Also I will give a seminar on Chautauqua Lake muskie fishing tonight as well.Come and join us tonight at the Moose Lodge on W. Henrietta Rd. at 7:00 pm.

  11. Low water levels making for loss of spawning habitat and to late to adjust the season start date to July 1st were the two major reasons for no season change. It will be looked at again in 2016, don't be surprised if the NYSDEC comes out with s July 1st to Dec 15th Great Lakes Musky Season for all NY Great Lakes Waters as their idea then.
  12. When each of you mail your checks be sure to write what nets your purchasing on the check.Net covers are not free this year, they are $10 if you would like those.Glad to see enough guys come together to place the 1st LOU Beckman Net Order for 2013.
  13. Warmer water & Low water,is having a big impact in fish spawning habitat changes. Also there are more dieoffs of the oldest fish in all species, they have not pinpointed the main reason yet, could be from eating the bottom feeding gizzard shad, they are not sure.Lamprey numbers are climbing rapidly even with treatment of streams, they may be coming from the St. Clair River area to Lake Erie.
  14. The NSDEC now has pulled the Great Lakes Season Changes Proposal off the table! After 5 months of driving everywhere I could be heard, getting Federation votes etc.. to get an extention on the Upper Niagara River & Lake Erie to Dec 15th,they just pull the option from the table. We had very strong support, even the NMA came in with a July 1st to Dec 15th season change proposal. Now the only thing going through is the 54" Sizelimit change.I hope at this point they do not scrap the Inland Season Changes as well! I'm very sorry for everyone else besides mysellf that spent so many hours on this issue, took all the flak & abuse from others, lost friends and sleep at times, all for nothing!
