Ok Guy's, I announced on my message board & muskie guy's message board that we are in the process of setting up a meeting to start a New NY Muskies Inc. Chapter. So now get the meeting date set so I can post that as well.I believe we can establish a strong membership for the New M.I. Chapter here in NY.In the future I can see Muskies Inc. International helping us with the Bait Fish Fund once it is established as part of the M.I. Chapters Conservation Fund.Time to also start thinking about a M.I. Chapter name, maybe WNY M.I. Chapter 69? Capt. Larry

Chad & Zach, Let me know when a meeting is setup,I'll be there! I would be willing to hold what ever board positon that needs to be filled,I would like to hold Conservation Director or maybe that position and another board position if need be! We need to get the Muskies Inc. Chapter 69 started before the muskie season opens in NY state. We can setup to get membership at the Chautauqua Tourney June 23rd as well! Capt. Larry

Zach,To find your answer to the NY DEC's long term vision for Conesus Lake and if pure-bred muskies can replace the tiger muskies being stocked there we would need to set up a meeting with the NY DEC once we get the Muskies Inc. Chapter up and running. If they would be willing to switch from tiger muskies to pure-bred muskies at Conesus we do not know until we have them at the table for discusion.I do like your idea of stocking the Genesee River, but because it flows into Lake Ontario they would most likely not want to stock Chautauqua strain muskies, they would want Great Lakes strain muskies and there presently is not a hatchery to supply them in NY state, only Wisconcin. You never know what the NY DEC Warm Water Fisheries guys will be willing to do as far as stocking additional Pure-bred Muskies in other NY state lakes until you ask.Just look out of no where they changed stocking at Findley Lake from Tiger Muskies to Pure-Bred Muskies,we need to find out why it was ok there and why not Conesus.
-
Who knows maybe we can start a pen project on Conesus Lake and raise Tiger Muskie Fingerlings by feeding them up to Ice in before release for a much better survival rate there. We would definately want to make sure we do not loose any pure bred muskie waters and see if we can get a couple more lakes stocked as well. Some lakes like Bear Lake need improved boat launch access and Lime Lake needs a public ramp at the present NY DEC Car Top Launch. The Prendergast Hatchery is the source of all of our Inland Pure-Bred Muskie Stocking,so we need to help them in any way we can.But above all is we need to step up and be heard, they need to know that Inland lake muskie fishermen make up a sizable number of fishermen in NY state and are willing not only to help keep the fisheries we have, but also improve them. As a charter member of the NMA I can say that the present muskie season start & stop dates were advicated by the NMA to protect the Niagara River fishery. The Buffalo Harbor & Upper Niagara River have seen a very big drop in muskie size and numbers over the past 7 years. Some of the bigger 50" to 54" muskies died of old age, some possably from VHS,but the recruitment behind those lost muskies was not very good for a number of years,so numbers are way down. The Upper Niagara river is starting to show some young of year muskies present, but not in all the regular spawning habitat. There seems to be a good recruitment of mid 30's inch muskies in the river, but numbers of bigger muskies is still very low.The Buffalo Harbor is having a very poor recuitment,no young of year muskies were found sein netting studies. The Buffalo Harbor & Upper Niagara River need to have the season stay closed in December, accualy there needs to be a push to get the Canadian side to close the season at the end of November and raise sizelimits as well.Chautauqua Lake does have a very limited amount of muskie natural reproduction going on,so changing seasons is a tough sell to NY DEC Warm Water Fisheries guy's in Albany. We may be able to talk them into a 3rd Saturday in May muskie season start for Chautauqua Lake because the spawn is done by then.We may also talk them into extending the season on Chautauqua Lake to December 15th as well.I think any extended season should be total catch & release for those extra fishing days. They will never go for total catch & release for muskies year round, the opposition from bass & walleye clubs would be totaly again'st any move in that direction and they have more numbers of fishermen.First thing is to get the Muskies Inc. Chapter going, work with the NMA as far as what is needed for the Niagara River & Bugffalo Harbor,Habitat Restoration. The main focus for a New Muskies Inc. Chapter should be on making sure that Prendergast Hatchery continues to operate,if we some day loose the hatchery,we loose our whole Inland Lake Pure-Bred Muskie Fisheries.Get established first,do a project like fin clip study on Chautauqua Lake, possibly replanting of cabbage beds in other places on the lake using existing plants.A study can also be done to see why they stocked Tiger Muskies in Conesus Lake over Pure-Bred Muskies.Tiger Muskies are usualy stocked as a short term solution to control populations of bait fish and other panfish species,as the numbers of bait fish and panfish start to decline they stop stocking Tiger Muskies.Because Tiger Muskies do not reproduce,if they do not restock them they will be gone over time and the other fish populations can multiply again. So we need to understand the total control of the fishery.Any water that has Northern Pike present is also not good for hatched musky fry, because they spawn first and those hatched Northern Pike Fry will be big enough to eat the Muskie Fry when they hatch. So any Pure-Bred Muskie program for Conesus Lake if it could be done would rely on stocking of sizable Muskie Fingerlings to have any real survival rate. But first of all we need to have a meeting to see if we can field enough interested people to get a New Muskies Inc. Chapter started,to protect the Inland Muskie Fisheries and work with the NMA in that presuit, along with supporting the NMA in there work as well!

The new thing with DWI's and DUI's is they charge you to enter the country. They will sell you a temp. residency to enter the country. When we did the LOU icefishing trip to the Bay of Quinte, one of the guys in my group had a DWI. They let him in but he shelled out $200 on the spot for the temp. residency. If the DWI is not 10 years old or older you will get to only pay your way accross(Temporary Resident Visa)1 time, then you will have to go through Reabiltation proccess to get a letter that allows you to cross into canada. I know because I just finished going through that whole proccess, took over 1 year,FBI Report,NY State Finger Print Report, Letter from the Odessa Texas Police Dept. explaining the charge,Texas State Finger Print Report,Local Tonawanda Police Report and 3 Reference of Good Conduct Letters,Airfare to Odesa ,Texas,Motels, in all about $1850 later I got the Reabitation Letter. Then every time you cross the border into canada with the Reabilitaion Letter they yellow slip you to immigration,so they can check and see if you have any new record so they can revoke the Letter.I would have never paid to get it,but my wife has relatives in Toronto!

Which alum. boat would you choose.

I would go with the Lund 2025 IFS ,but I would put a Honda 250 hp outboard and a Honda 15 hp kicker on it! -
Chad,I have been trying to get the NMA to take ownership of the Tourney's / Bait Fish Fund and have a Chautauqua represenative that reports at the NMA Meetings.4 years of bringing it up,they do not want the liability! So it has to be a New Muskie Club for Chautauqua Lake or all NY Inland Muskie Lakes.Only other option would be to collect only cash the day of the Tourney,no paypal / no checks, have two other persons count the money after prize payout and get a money order to send all funds left over directly to the Bait Fish Co. that is contracted by the NY Dec for the Hatchery.
-
Well after going over tax liability for myself for 2013 with my CPA,I have to make major changes starting next year.Because I start collecting Social Security next year I can not earn more then $14,000.00,if I do I loose Social Security dollars. So I have to get the Chautauqua Tourney & Bait Fish Fund off my tax books and on to a New Muskies Inc Chapter or New All Esox Club. This would be a 501c3 Org where the funds can be carried over in the Bait Fish Fund from year to year.As it is now any funds not paid out the year that it is raised is Income on my Tax Returns,as I found out this year getting hit for back taxes for 2008,2009,2010 tax returns.I also have to scale back my fishing charters to about 1/3 as to not reach the $14,000.00 income limit. So everyone,If No One Is Willing To Help Start A Muskie Club to have a Conservation Fund started to hold the Tourney & Bait Fish Funds,I may have to bring the Tourney's to an end! I can not start a club by myself! The two Tourneys this year will cover the $3000 bait fish purchase this year, funds that I have that had taxes paid on them will cover bait fish purchase for 2013.Unless we start a New Muskie Club to collect Tourney Entry Fees and Bait Fish Funds for the 2013 tax year, everything stops at the end of 2012.Last bait fish purchased will be 2013 if New Club is not started, sorry I can not loose my Social Security to keep it going! With all this said,it is also very important that we have big turnout at the June 23rd & July 28th Tourney's so that we grow very big muskie fingerlings this year and also next year, because this may be the last two years we can make a difference. To keep it going some people have to step up and help start a Muskie Club Now! Capt. Larry D. Jones

We need to get the Muskies Inc Chapter 69 going or start an All Esox Club this year. Next year I start collecting social security,I no longer will be able to carry the bait fish funds and tourney signup through my paypal account.Between charter funds collected by paypal and tourney paypal collections ,I will end up earning to much and will loose dollars from my social security. If we can't start a muskie club to hold the bait fish funds,I may be forced to bring the Bait Fish Fund to an end! Capt. Larry

As mentioned we are having a 2nd Chautauqua Tourney on July 28th using the same format.I've also been thinking about possibly adding a July 29th Chautauqua Tourney Championship Sunday's Chautauqua Tourney Championship would be a fish off for the Top 20 Fishermen from Saturday(no entry fee--must qualify). If there are not 20 Fishermen that caught fish on Saturday the remaining positions would be drawn from those fishermen that are present at Saturday's Awards Presentaion. The Chautauqua Tourney Championship fishermen will be paired up by drawing, only the two fishing the Championship can be in the boat they are using. They would get a Special Chautauqua Tourney Championship Hat that must be worn while taking muskie picture. Those Top 20 Fishermen would fish using the Point System,3 points for 40"muskie and 1 point for every Inch over 40". The Winner gets a Chautauqua Tourney Championship Trophy & $500 Cash! Is this Idea worth doing or not?

If your a vessel for hire(charter captian) working with clients and do not report when entering canadian waters, the hassle is even worse.Your responcible for checking to see all clients passports or enhanced drivers licenses are in order.I call every time I run from the foot of sheridan drive up to Lake Erie ,up the upper Niagara river and get the control number.I call so often that they give me the control number without much questions. But just because you called in and got a control number for entering canada, that still doesn't keep them from stopping you and running the names of each person aboard looking for criminal records like DWI's,so they can send you back and ban anyone they catch with a record from crossing back into canadain waters until they get reabilitation letter.

The Lake Erie perch bite is very hot right now.I have caught limits of 3/4 to 1 lb perch in 41 ft of water near the mid channel bouey in front of Buffalo. Emerald shinners using a standard perch rig.
-
I had water temp of 48 degrees a couple days ago on the surface out by the mid channel bouey in front of Buffalo.I have always done best off Windmill Point in 50ft hole once water temp reaches 55 degrees.

If you troll worm harnesses definately make sure you have a swivel to stop twist up from the blades rolling or from sheephead or silver bass rolling on the end of your setup. On stick baits swivel between main line and leader and small cross lock snap at connection end,do not put swivel with snap at the end of your leader on stick baits. This will add weight and dive curve and the action will be different working off the swivel.I use jet divers with 10 ft seaguar fluorocarbon leader in 10 lb test, gibbs weights 50 ft up the main line, size of weight changes with position of the sun as suspended eyes drop deeper. Long lining at night I use 12 lb test Maxima a micro swivel between main line and 10 ft seaguar fluorocarbon 10 lb test leader. But when using floating rapala's i do not use a crosslock snap,I tie a rapala loop knot. http://www.learninghowtofish.com/pages/ ... -knots.php

I have done well with jigs for walleye off the reefs and humps out infront of Buffalo,Seneca Shoal & Meyers Reef in Lake Erie and the Upper Niagara River from Jafco Marina to Ontario street launch, especialy when the spawn has not happened yet.But this year the water temp may be so warm at the opener the spawn will be done and the eyes may already move out to 50 ft of water or deeper, setting up the trolling bite.

2012 Pike/Tiger Opener
mostlymuskies replied to Ronix 51's topic in Musky, Tiger Musky & Pike (ESOX)
"A person may not fish for a species (not even catch and release) during the closed season for that species on a given water" from the NY DEC Regulations page. Yes pike will hit bass lures,if you stay in the same spot and continue to catch pike durring closed season, you can be considered targeting fish species that are out of season. -
The LOU Beckman Net Deal is now closed! Those who comitted to purchase nets if you have not sent in payment yet it must reach me by April 19th.Any payments recieved after April 19th will be returned

2012 Pike/Tiger Opener
mostlymuskies replied to Ronix 51's topic in Musky, Tiger Musky & Pike (ESOX)
When you catch a species of fish that is not in season your to water release the fish imeadiately,no lifting out of water pictures, then your suppost to move to another area so as to not be targeting an out of season species of fish. To catch a 2nd fish of the same species from the exact same spot and that species of fish is not in season can be looked upon as targeting fish that are out of season. You can use any leader you want with your bass lure! -
I must recieve payment by Thursday April 19th from anyone wanting to get a net through the final LOU Beckman Net Deal!
