  1. Got out early AM to a LO creekmouth& had about 10 Bass on this morn before 9 . Mostly Smallies but a few Largemouths. Also got bit off twice. Water was murky so I used a Firetiger crank for a few, one on a rattletrap. I have been using as of the past few years a 1/16 wide gap jighead w/ 3" or 4" Senkos or Gander Equv. Also 4" finnese worms (CHEAPER). This has been my go to for a Jig bite & have done well on it in a variety of situations.
  2. Which one of us has the nads to drive a piece of crap boat& both licences totaly leagal over the boarder just enough to get harrased by the Canadian Boarder Patrol, put up a stink, & get hauled off to jail for just fishing?
  3. Weak president = We get pushed around by rest of the world & we take it. My bet is the Frogs woudn't even think of do this type of thing during the Reagan years.Maybe Schumer should go up & apologize & beg for forgivness & promise we will never do such a thing again. USA needs to wake up & fast.
  4. I had a 70's Johnson that would do pretty much the same thing. Looked at the coil & it had small cracks in it & I replaced it but the coil only lasted about 3 months. Was running it at dusk in a barrel & saw the plug wire under the flywheel was arching & cracked. Taped it good and problem went away till I sold the boat. A Freind had a Johnson ,maybe a 115 and was experiencing same thing. , it had more than one coil with cracks & he replaced them & it fixed it.Not an expert but that was my experience.
  5. The thing I ALWAYS say & still do is to keep things simple . First & most important thing is LOCATION. If you are not on fish, you won't catch many. Also what to use/do at what time of year or situation or location is key IMO. Spoons off riggers are best & easiest way at first. Now till Mid Aug.
  6. As a Kid we use to go up w/ the Scouts on a trip and fish beetween& around FoX & Grenader Islands & did well. We Camped on the lawn of one of the kids Grandparents 1/2 way between Scotts & Ponds. Great Fishing & memories of up there. Always did shore lunch one day by that old Ice house on the island. I can still taste how good that fish was. Very weedy back then out there w/ all the prosphates & fertilizer run off. That Sheephead looks like somthing out off Saltwater !
  7. Thanks for the spelling lesson there, chowder. I wasn't aware that this would be a state wide thing that would impact every piece of freshwater without special regs.Is this the case? If so, I fear my favotite law " The law of unintended consiquences " ,that everyone seems to ignore, may just rear it's ugly head. But look on the brite side!! You lake guys will get what you want, and thats the important part. I just point out facts as I see them .
  8. 20 years ago you did not need money, just big Kahuns & a pulse. Started back in the Clinton days boys, people buying much more than they could afford. Now we're all paying the fiddler, or not. McCain wouldn't have done much better, but he couldn't do any worse. America needs a reality check& to live below her means..............FAST.
  9. So we aren't concerned about overcrowding on Freshwater piers or populations of small ponds ,lakes,& streams ? Finally a politition that has at least some common sense.
  10. Went geo caching with the Boy Scouts a few times. My handheld was amazingly accurate to within about 2 'or less . We Played games to test how accurate it was. Kind of scary . My kids liked to take my handheld on long trips. On The road nav page , the speedometer was so accurate & responsive, it mimicked the speedometer on the vehicle. It has it's bad days, but For the most part, the thing is spot on. Getting back to the original post,Boat ball & lure are all traveling at the same rate of speed. It's the current that makes the differences . Don't make it more complicated than it is. Fundamentals , Fundamentals, Fundamentals. Sounds like someone had a little to much "Sunshine " in school.
  11. WOW!!! Am I back in math class?
  12. T-Bro, it tells you how far the technology we have availlable to us as sport fisherman, not that thats a bad thing .Amazingly , I still could catch a fish once in a while back then . Watched the cable angles, Listened to the outboard ,cause I didn't have a tach. I used what I had availlable to me .Now, drop it down , dial it in to precision, no guess work .Ah, the good old days. The Boat , ball & lure are all moving at the same rate of speed , anyway you look at it. The probe is measuring the effect the current is having on the lure. And I remember a day when I fished out of Bald Eagle 9 miles offshore early morn till around 3. Heading west into a brisk breeze at 2.5-3.5 mph surface speedmost of day. Dodgers & Squids , one of my best days out there for Mature Kings. Couldn't stay on my waypoint on my Loran, but didn't much care. Punched home port in at end of day & it said I needed to head way west. Didn't trust it , headed straight south & came in on Cowsucker creek. I was essentially fishing backwards. There are some mean currents out there.
  13. I have an 86 Trophy hartop pretty much same as yours w/ a OMC 230 Cobra & needs all of it. Came w/ 15/17 prop & switched per Spinelli to a 15 1/2 / 15. It might need a tune up or a rebuild if it is tired & has a lot of hrs on it. Mine does 32-35 WOT on a good day.
  14. The GPS SOG measurment is the only TRUE measurment. Yes ,it really has nothing to do with much other than to measure both surface or underwater current against it.Great tool for that. It seems to me the factors involved are SOG , surface speed of boat thru water , Speed measured at ball ( essentially the current differential) and cross trac error. You guys somtimes make things more complicated than they really are. It amazes me some of the electronics we can't live without available in todays society. Makes me wonder how we ever got things done 30 years ago. When I first started trolling I would hold the lure over the side of the boat & watch it.
  15. What are you using & where? Maybe we can help.I would try a #5 Mepps Bucktail or Spinnerbait over shallow rock pts or ledges next to where the weeds will grow. Bass ain't bad, take what the lake gives ya.
  16. So does that mean when your car is going 55 into a 15 MPH wind you are going70 mph? Dad is right , probably as usual. The probe is to decipher underwater currents relative to boat speed on the surface. Both ball & boat are going the same SOG.
  17. When do we start fishing? Smart kid. I have one who likes trolling & one who could not care less. Was at the bro's Memorial day & watched two young kids 10-12 fishing for about an hr with about zero chance of hooking a fish ,and having a ball. casting , reeling in , putting bait or lure on , is a big part of the experience. They feel like THEY are fishing, more hands on . I have older friends who feel the same way as your kids. Fish how They want to .The bobber & worms might be the way for a few more years. I had my son who likes trolling tape up some of his own spoons the night before or on the boat to look forward to using that day & let HIM set them. One of his creations is still one of our best.
  18. Fishing Report Your Name / Boat Name: ============== TRIP OVERVIEW ============== Date(s): Time on Water: Weather/Temp: Wind Speed/Direction: Waves: Surface Temp: Location: LAT/LONG (GPS Cords): =============== FISHING RESULTS =============== Total Hits: Total Boated: Species Breakdown: Hot Lure: Trolling Speed: Down Speed: Boat Depth: Lure Depth: ==================== SUMMARY & FURTHER DETAILS Went to the Bro's for a family picnic this afternoon. Fished on and off. Some nice perch on white jigs but it was kind of slow cause of the muddy water. Cast My Fave Krockodile into the Lake when mudline moved down and got a nice Atlantic about 10 #s. ====================
  19. We have Largemouth that are similar to FLA . Same techs only a little more finnese is required.I like a Horny toad over weeds also. Also Smallmouth , they like rocky weed edges & roam open water down to say 35' feeding on the bottom on crabs ,minnows & gobies. Jigs & cranks for them deeper but small spinnerbaits & jerkbaits for them shallower.Great Northern Pike can get up to 20 lbs. Weeds & Edges for them . Inline spinners,Spinnerbaits,Sticks & all plastics for them.Panfish are Yellow perch, sunnies , Crappie & Rockbass. All can be had on live bait , or my Fave , small plastics in 1/32-1/16 oz ultralight 4 # test. Lake Ontario has the Trout & salmon you read about. In the fall ,say Sept they start to migate up the local steams to spawn & that goes on till spring. Look at the trib section on here for that. Best times & place- Bass & Pike- you have Braddocks bay, Irondiquiot bay, Sodus Bay, Sandy Creek & Oak Orchard , witin 1 hr drive of Greece. Also the fingerlakes. Pike is open now ,Bass 3rd Sat in June. Any trib to the Lake has fish & can be HOT at times. I fish FLA for Bass & inshore Saltwater & a more Finnese presentation is required up here. Also lots of piers on Lake O. 7 ' light action spin w/ 4 # ,6 # max will get you action now for starts ,1/32 -1/16 oz plastic jigs. Slow & on bottom. Good Luck.
  20. On the Inshore fishery in FLA , a guide told me to use 15# Power pro w/ a 20 lb Flouro leader years back . Won't go down without it. Works great. I use a 7' med action spin down there, Jigs mostly. Use the same up here for Pike & deep water smallmouths w/ a 10# leader. No strech & great hooksets. I don't really like it for Casting reels w/ spinnrbaits or cranks. Ray's right, the Power pro is worth the money. Lasts forever, wears like Iron, and you can feel the fish breath on the lure. Down there I buy a 150yd spool & split it for 2 reels over heavier Mono. Not great for lightline jigging for me , I still prefer mono for that& casting spinners & cranks. Tie Reverse Albright pro to leader 2-3'.
  21. Also I never trolled it til after July 4 as I recall. Hit it hard a few years from late Aug till early Oct & did our best for eyes.
  22. This year the reason the Brown fishery was so good was the dirty water on the entire sothern shore or the lake. Pre Zebra mussel era , it was hard to see the bottom or your rigger weights down 6 ft on clear water days. This year reminded me of those days , and the techs used were the same as them. That's the corrolation I see. When the water is gin clear nearshore, the inshore fishery is not good. NE storm & water gets cloudy from erosion , it gets better. Surely Gambler, you have to have noticed that. I have been Trib fishing since 1975. Seen it good & bad . About 15 years or so ago it was so bad a few years I kind of stopped going. That was attributted to whirlling deasease & week stocking fry by DEC as I recall. Then we got Pen rearing &also the Virus cleared up ( which I think was worse than reported)and we have a better fishery. Also baitfish crash , Intoduction of exotics( Zebra , gobies , etc.)which the fishery took time to adjust to was a factor. I lived through that period. I don't know about you Gambler , but I did great on Browns this year. Saw a lot caught, & released , not many on stringers. The Stream crowd is growing by leaps & bounds & have evolved into a sporting group from my observations. They also put a lot into our NY local economy. We should encourage that . One fish is kind of chinsy. Who are these angler groups DEC is talking about? Besides , always learning , I learned this is a put & take fishery for economic reasons from one of the Captains on here, so what is the harm? We should want our out of state guests to take the Big fish they land home, shove it into the face of their friends & brag , so they come back up & spend more money.Changing laws to harvest more in the lake & less in the tribs is contridictory. All should be equal. Yea, I fear change. Heard a lot about change a few years back. Aint workin out so well though. Right on Jimski!
  23. We would troll for miles & somtimes there would be no reason as to why /where the fish were . I feel they are coming from the Niagara river so they are migrating down the canal till they find somthing to hold them for a while. And we all know they are picky SOB's. We never really got a lot. 3 was a really good day.Haven't tried it for about 10 years or so.
  24. Why not reduce the limit of Fish in Lake Ontario itself if they are so concerned about overharvesting ? I have seen many pics of limit stringers of Browns on here the last 2 months or so. Look at the reports of on the South Shore section of here this year. A bannner year for Browns. Most likely becauce of the water /mud conditions this year. There is NO shortage of Browns that warrants this change .
  25. I use to take my small boat up to the widewaters on a nice summer day just before dark . Troll into it then bounce a small jig from shore to deeper on the way back. Did very well on all species, including eyes. Anything to break up the shoreline was hot. The Canal is a very underated place to fish. I grew up about 100 yds from it & thats pretty much where I learned to fish.Chicken livers on the bottom for Catfish.Carp big enough to tow your boat. There are Largemouth in and around trees in the widewaters or bridge enbutments . Caught a ton of Smallmouth to 5 lbs in my younger days. The eyes were rare but we got some .An old guy when I was young use to use a yellow Bettle Spin for eyes. That spot looks a little familiar to me.
