I guess I'm behind the times or just plain cheap. I shoot Winchester Expert 3" in size 2 and BB's at 1550 fps. About $129 a case at Gander Mountain right now. I bought a bunch on sales at Dicks a couple years ago and with a factory re-bait paid less than $8 a box! With factory improved cylinder chock for decoying geese they seem to drop geese as well as the high price loads my friends sometimes shoot. I switch to Mod chock when pass shooting and also seem to do fine. I've tried the 3 1/2" shells and found they didn't add much if anything to performance and the added cost and punishment on the shooter and gun weren't worth it to me.
I haven't patterned the loads, or tried after market chokes for comparison (although I have for turkey) but from my goose hunting observations of myself and friends I'm sticking with what appears to work well for me at a very reasonable cost. Certainly not a scientific approach but maybe a good practical one.

SUMMARY & FURTHER DETAILS The guy at he bait store said it was a blood bath there Monday and Tuesday. Not so for us today, although we did get a nice fish and drop a second. Boats were widely scattered and seemed to be in the search mode spreading out mostly in the 100-160 range. We only saw a handful of fish boated.

Pete, I guess your right extermination may be a bit harsh. I breast them and prepare like teal breast or woodcock (still pink inside). Don't overcook them or they taste livery. I often marinate them and either grill or use in a stir-fry.
Sorry you had a tough morning. If you rally want the cost per pound you better figure in the cost of the boat, maintenance, fuel, gear etc. On the second thought forget the cost and just enjoy yourself!
A farmer friend called and said the pigeons were in his silage and wanted them out. I recently purchased a new Winchester Super X3 and wanted to try it out.
Last week I went up and shot about thirty and returned yesterday and shot forty. Great practice for the early goose hunting as the pigeons were coming in over decoys (they decoy very well) Lots of fun and since they are grain feed they are good eating.
By the way the gun worked flawlessly and I was only shooting low bass 1 oz 8's. The manual recommends 1 1/8 oz as minimum 2 3/4" load. I'm not to worried about it handling the bigger waterfowl loads.
I got skunked on the walleyes today but caught a nice limit of 14-17" smallmouths I guess I'm getting a bit selective when I feel like I had an unsuccessful morning cause I didn't hit a walleye.
I know the feeling. You hate to see them go to waste but like to release the breeders. Only one thing we know for sure. They don't have a chance to survive once you decide to keep them. I believe all you can do is use your own best judgement. You're obviously releasing most of the big ones, which is commendable.
River is also very warm. There seem to be two groups of smallies in the river. Some seem to stay shallower in the 15-30 foot range but many go deep in August and they are definitely tightly schooled on bait. I've caught them 125 feet down.
I got the bass deeper (65-75 feet) but didn't fish for them till later in the morning.. Walleyes I caught were 25-40 feet. Caught the bass on 1 oz. drop shots and walleyes trolling sticks.
Glad your catching some. I haven't tried lead core but I think the current would play havoc. I've been thinking of trying wire with homemade bottom bouncers instead of braid. Down riggers work but it's tough to fish them by myself.
