My kids will be home for a visit but I'll be out early mornings. I've tried trolling shallow a couple times early morning without success so far this year. Usually I find that method is good early and move to deeper water after sun is up. I didn't even see any glowing eyes with my spotlight but that will change. Feel free to contact me as I'm on the water a lot.

Up early this morning to beat the heat. Hit many small and largemouths in 4-10 fow. kept a limit that were deep hooked and let many others go. We caught well over 20 bass and quit by 9:30. Most were 13-18" fish. I actually caught 8 fish while talking to my daughter on speaker cell phone

Sh's certainly been there before. I put her against most guys I take fishing.

Fished bass this morning and saw a ton of gills so went back with the fly rod tonight and caught 15 nice ones.Lots of fun.

Fished a local small lake and limited out in a couple hours. My wife Donna was on fire this morning and caught the two largest ones 15 and 16 1/2 " Senkos did the trick. It's always a great morning when you share the outdoors with your spouse. We saw a couple deer on the drive to the lake, heard a turkey gobbling and saw five loons frolicking together.

I fished a small lake yesterday morning and there were swarms of gills off the edge of weed beds. A mix of sizes but there were some big ones. Took home around 20 for the table but I want to go back and try them on my fly rod. Also hit some largemouths which I released, one about 18". I may have to try to catch them on Saturday.

First walleye of the year on the river (23"). Hit him in 65' on a jigging spoon. Perfect size for a meal and hopefully the first of many. I also hit some smallmounths in the same depth water but they were returned till tomorrow. Surprised they are that deep this early but things seem to be in the summer mode.

We also caught some very nice fish! I crewed for guide Dave Siegfried of Tracker Charters. Friday in a prefish tourney we finished 8th (paid first 5 places) . It was a three fish derby and we entered 2 kings and a steelhead and totaled 7 fish. A third king would have put us in the money. Saturday we fished the Pro division and had a tough day. We hit a king early and then went three hours without a hit. We ended up with one king, a coho, and 4 steelhead. Sunday started out great as we were hooked up 3 minutes after the start. We landed a nice king and looked for more on the inside but came up empty. We headed deeper and hit a couple steelhead and a coho and then hit another king.. The next fish was a 23lb. king, a beautiful fish that may be headed to the taxidermist. We needed a couple more Kings to make the short box board. (heaviest 5 fish) Dave worked his butt off and we did pretty well but didn't manage to cash in. I'm sure we could have caught more fish but we were targeting Kings for the shot box.I gained a great deal of experience and coaching on rigging and running down-riggers, wire divers, 300 and 400' copper-lines and lead cores. It's amazing that you can run so many deep running rigs with very few tangles. I also learned a lot about rigging, fighting and netting salmon and steelhead. Very few fish that we hooked up were lost. I also got an education on boat control, as I drove quite a bit on Friday and Sunday. If anybody is looking to book a trip on the west end of the lake I'd highly recommend Tracker Charters. He is very personable, experienced, knowledgeable, and is a great teacher. He keeps a nice clean boat and is precise in the details. I have fished my entire life and guided on the St Lawrence River for many summers. I also chase the browns at Mexico and do some trout and salmon fishing on the lake. That said, I learned a tremendous amount spending a weekend fishing with Dave. If you want to improve your learning curve I'd definitely recommend booking a trip with a pro. ====================

That is a big one. They sure put up a good battle. I often think I'm tangling with a big walleye on when I hook one. They are one of those Rodger Dangerfield fish that gets no respect

Grenadier and Fox are both in New York. Charity Shoal is another spot you want to explore a little further out from Grenadier.

Poll:Would you release a 10-14 lb Walleye from Eastern L.O ?
Kevin J Legg replied to BP Swing's topic in Walleye
I also believe it is an individual decision as long as one remains within their legal limit. That said, I fish the BOQ in the fall and the St Lawrence, Henderson and Oswego. We choose to release nearly all fish over about 24". We catch many over 30" and almost all are returned. I also prefer to eat the smaller fish as they are much better to eat and contain less toxins. I support letting the breeders go but am not oppose to someone keeping a trophy for the wall. Legal policies are formulated by the DEC and politicians but ethical decisions are made by individuals. I'm not sure what I'd do myself if I hit one 14 or 15lbs. -
Great bunch of fish especially on a fly rod. When I was a kid we use to get some big ones in Honeoye and later in Saratoga Lake They are lots of fun and great eating.
-
Should be good out of Henderson. Stony and Calf Island and further out to Charity Shoal and False Ducks. Bay of Quinte is definately a good bet but not till late fall (Nov.-Dec.)Also don't overlook the St Lawrence River. I catch there pretty well in late July and August.

Cape Cod Black Sea Bass
Kevin J Legg replied to Kevin J Legg's topic in New York Fishing Reports - Lake Ontario (South Shore)
After hitting the sea bass hard on jigs and plastic for three mornings I decided to try a different technique. I used a 2 oz. jigging spoon and absolutely slayed them. We ended up with 130 fish in the freezer for our four day effort and limited out each day. Today we were keeping the larger males and they likely averaged 3lbs. or more each. I'm packed up and we're headed home in the morning with a cooler full of delicious fillets. -

Cape Cod Black Sea Bass
Kevin J Legg replied to Kevin J Legg's topic in New York Fishing Reports - Lake Ontario (South Shore)
Sea bass are bottom fish and a boat is generally required. Great opprotunity fishing for Stripers and bluefish are possible from the shore or wading on many areas on the Cape. The Cape Cod Canal is alos a good accessi point. You might want to check out "On The Water Outdoors" on the web. -

We've limited out each morning and today caught our four person limit of 40 fish by 8:00. They are running 2.5-4 lbs. and are delicious eating fish. We have 100 packaged for the freezers.Plan to hit them agasin in the morning. I love it when you go to a differentregion and actually kick the natives butt. ====================

Thanks for the report. I'll hav e to get out when I return from Cape Cod. -
I fished Rays Bay near Henderson yesterday and caught 5 browns and a whitefish in a few hours fishing. Ran to Sackets and tried the walleyes but didn't move a rod.
