I'm long lining 10lb braid with deep diving cranks for walleyes and don't really have a solution to that set up.

The last two times I fished the St Lawrence I had a lot of problems with water fleas on my line. Did hit a 24" eye and 8 bass this morning but the fleas were the worst I've ever seen them. Never saw them here until about 3-4 years ago Wish the Boarder Patrol had kept them out of the US!

I like the early morning 4:00-8:00 as there is no boat traffic but the evening should be good also. You can also catch some latter in the morning but they move deeper.
-
Caught a 19" walleye and limit of smallmouths (14-18") this morning on the river.

Lisbon is good in May but I catch plenty near Alex Bay this time of the year but there is quite a learning curve involved. Lots of techniques will work some of the time but consistency is a tougher thing. We ate some of those eyes this week and they were delicious but I like pan fish too.

Many launches available on the river. Clayton, Cape Vincent and Alex Bay all have launches as do most of the State parks

Fish were down river from the TI bridge.

18" size limit so three small ones had to go back. 19" was last one I caught and seemed to be in better shape than those in the live-well..

Stayed on US side.

I got up very early this morning and hit the St Lawrence River by myself. Ended up catching seven walleyes. three around 17" and one 19" were released. The photo shows me with two 28" and on 20" and a 18" and 16" smallmouth. I was back at the launch by 8:00

Quick trip out this morning caught 1 walleye and one decent smallmouth near Alexandria Bay. I took three eyes early one morning last week. Fish are shallow at night and drop deeper after the sun comes up. Trolling deep diving cranks and stick baits off heavy bottom bouncers in fast current.

I generally let all the bigger ones go but I had company that weekend that wanted some fish. I only had a couple hours to fish and keep what I caught for their meal. I completely agree with your advice however.

I caught some trolling crank baits the other morning very early while walleye fishing. Also caught three eyes. Fish were in the current up on shoals 8-30'.

I actually feed them fried pike, walleye, perch, and black sea bass the night before but they liked the grilled brown best.

Try a brown sugar, salt, and spice ( black pepper, garlic, etc.) rub on brown trout before grilling. People that I've served it to claim it's the best fish they've ever eaten.

Water level of Butterfield has dropped and they have made improvements on the ramp area.

I've got a house full of company this weekend but couldn't resist sneaking out for a couple hours opening morning. Fished Chippewa Bay and had a nice limit by 6:30 and was home by 7:00 and there were only two people awake when I returned. 4" Senkos in close did the trick. All over 14"-18" and a mix of large and small mouths. Released an few smaller fish. Oh, and my new trolling motor doesn't arrive till Monday so I was handicapped fishing without one.

Fished one of the local Indian River Lakes by myself this morning. Trolled crank-baits on longlines and caught a few smallish bass (released), a pike, a few small perch, a crappie and two eater walleyes. Trolled weed edges in 12-20 fow. Had a couple others come unbuttoned that I believe were walleyes as they were near the waypoint that I caught the others.

I agree and the cost of gas makes for an expensive trip. That's why when I retired I decided to downsize and bought a Lund Alaskan 18' with a 60 HP four stoke and a 9.9 kicker. I have to be a little more selective on my days on the big lake, but if I take 2 buddies we can trailer the boat just about anywhere and get by with not a great deal of expense. It actually cost more to drive the truck to the launch then we burn all day fishing. It's been and incredible spring for the browns. Maybe everyone also got spoiled with the fantastic early fishing. -

Although we only managed one keeper stiper and about 20 schoolies and saw no sign of bluefish we locked on a great bunch of large black sea bass and limited out three mornings in a row. 90 fish in three days! Great fun and great eating. ====================

Found birds, bait, and a few fish early but bite didn't last. Should have been there an hour earlier. Moved shallow and deep and switched up spoons and sticks but couldn't solve the puzzle today. Ended with two about 4lbs. and one about 7 lbs. I'm wondering how others did. ====================

Don't Ya Love May?

I got another turkey and had a great day last week with 11 browns, 2 walleyes (one 30") and a pike (32"). Headed to Quinte for walleye tournament and then to Cape Cod for stripers. Can't beat May except for the weather the last two weeks.
