oswego....new haven...mexico
Kevin J Legg replied to fshnwmn's topic in New York Fishing Reports - Lake Ontario (South Shore)
Most everyone on this sight has been very helpful with general information. I haven't been out on the lake since fishing spring browns. From what I've heard the salmon bite has been sporadic with few large fish and the early morning brown bite has been a little better. Things will definitely pick up as we move through August. Lots of fish on the western end of the lake this entire month. -
Thanks for the report. My brother lives on Toby Island off Monument Beach and I get down there a couple times a year. We caught some nice keeper strippers this spring and I hope to return again this summer and fall. We always have a great time and he has a beautiful home with a great view of Mashnee flats and just a short run to the canal. Your report makes me want to make the trip but I have a rough time leaving the St. Lawrence River and Lake Ontario near where I live.

Thanks for the report. I need to get out n on the big pond and give them a try! I've been fishing walleyes in the river and bass in Butterfield Lake. -
Fishing Report Your Name / Boat Name: ============== TRIP OVERVIEW ============== Date(s): Time on Water: Weather/Temp: Wind Speed/Direction: Waves: Surface Temp: Location: LAT/LONG (GPS Cords): =============== FISHING RESULTS =============== Total Hits: Total Boated: Species Breakdown: Hot Lure: Trolling Speed: Down Speed: Boat Depth: Lure Depth: ==================== SUMMARY & FURTHER DETAILS I'm interested in getting into the salmon action on the big pond. I live near Alexandria Bay and have a 18' Lund Alaskan. Is Henderson worth a try or do I need to travel further west? (I don't really want to run to the shipping lanes) I know they are slamming them on west end. I had a good spring fishing browns out of Mexico and would like to get in on the salmon bite. I 'm kinda out of the loop as I've been busy working on boats, completing my honey-do list and fishing St. Lawrence walleyes. Any information would be appreciated. ====================

Bass fishing has been good on the river, Caught a limit opening day shallow (3-8' of water) on 4" Senkos and again today. Let a bunch more go but here is a picture of the limit I kept this morning. Last week, before the season opened, I caught a bunch in 30-60' of water while fishing walleyes. Must be some have spawned and some are still at it.

I fished the river, near Alex Bay, a couple mornings this week. First day I caught a 23" walleye trolling a Reef runner in about 30' of water also caught several nice smallmouths which were released. Latter I switched to jigging spoon and caught a throw back walleye and a few bass in 40-70' Similar results this morning. Another 23" walleye on a trolled DD Taildancer and also a few nice bass. Latter went to vertical jigging and caught more bass and some decent perch in 55-70'.

Remember that bass and Muskie season isn't open till June 19th. If your after pike ,browns and walleyes you might try Black River Bay, Chaumont, Three mile Bay, Guffins and Mud Bay areas. Running boards and riggers in 20-40' of water with deep cranks, spinner and worm, or even spoons. May need snap weights to get deep enough. Walleyes may also be taken in the river with jigs tipped with worms or leeches, jigging spoons and deep diving cranks trolled slowly into the current. Fish the drop off of shoals in 20-50' of water and best bit is early morning or evening. Pike along deep weed beds with jigs, spoons, spinners or minnows. Make sure you check the weather as the lake can kick up in a hurry.

Cape Cod Stripers
Kevin J Legg replied to Kevin J Legg's topic in New York Fishing Reports - Lake Ontario (South Shore)
May (about now) is the time for big fish in the Canal. We were fishing from a 17' Boston Whaler on the west end of the canal near the Marine Academy in Bourne. I understand the Hudson has fished great this spring. -
The crappies have definitely moved into shallow water haunts to prepare for spawn. They have darkened up and are in normal shallow shoreline structure. Fished an Indian River Lake yesterday and caught 23 crappies and 10 bluegills that we kept. All the bass went back..Many fish in shallows, you can even sight fish them Worked the shoreline with trolling motor and anchored up when we caught a crappie. Often caught a few fish after we caught one. One small shallow bay, near deep water, was loaded with fish ( bass, crappie, bluegill) and we hung there for over an hour catching a bunch of fish.

Sandy 5/13
Kevin J Legg replied to paprman's topic in New York Fishing Reports - Lake Ontario (South Shore)
Nice reportWe fished west of Sandy earlier this week. We were working basically the same program as you but only trolling at 1.8-2.0 (GPS). We lost several fish on a perch Stinger in the small size . They seemed to stay buttoned better with larger size spoons. We also saw very few boats out. We ended up 7 for 11 with one laker. -

Federal 3 1/2 ", #5s. At close range it saves on the cleaning process. Beard was only around 9" but spurs were long. -
Crappies in the Syracuse area? Any suggestions
Kevin J Legg replied to ryanrobb52's topic in Panfish
Ryan, I know it's a bit of a run but most of the Indian River Lakes are good. I've been having decent luck when weather warms and we have a S-SW wind. Let me know if you whar more information or give me a call. With this cold weather I'd hold off on the crappies until it warms up again as it will surely put them off. Cold front s always seem to really shut th3m down for a few days. -

Paul, I'll be heading to the Hudson River and on to Cape Cod in about a week and a half for Stripers. Also I will most likely fish Black River Bay for walleye and head to St Regis River for stream trout. Choose your poison in May!
