  1. It was a little windy but we still had a great outing on the river. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  2. Just check the weather and avoid strong W NW or SW winds. Lighter wind or winds out of S or E should be no issue. I fish my 18’ Lund Alaskan with no issues. Just avoid fishing in waves over 2’ as it isn’t very comfortable although the boat can handle it. Also you won’t need to be far off shore fishing browns. Windfinder.com is a pretty decent source for wind speed, direction and wave heights. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  3. From my research the risk is low to begin with. In addition freezing to -4 F for 7 days kills any potential parasites ( make sure your freezer is set this cold)and the salt kills and bacteria so should be fine. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  4. Was thinking even if you could launch at Stony it might be pretty shallow journey out to the lake same with Pine Grove. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  5. Tastes like lox to me. going to have it tomorrow with bagels, cream cheese, red onion and tomato.
  6. After reading the dangers of fresh water lox I decided to try it. Froze the skinned fillets for a week then put them in 50/50 mix of Kosher Salt and sugar with some dill weed. Vacuum sealed and put in refrigerator with a plate and weight on top. Left 2 days remove bones, rinsed and sliced thin. Then candled to search for parasites. 7. I want to give Tony’s Reel and Downrigger Repair out of Orchard Park a shout out. I sent them two Penn reels that were not functioning and one with a broken part. They repaired them and even sent me an extra part in case I need it at a later time. Also very personable on the phone and reasonably priced. I’d highly recommend them. 8. I bought a plug in Bubba and it has worked flawlessly. Also a little less expensive than American Angler and extremely dependable and efficient. Also comes with 4 blades but I like the thin ones. I burned out several Mr Twisters and have used the Bubba for a year and had no issues. It doesn’t even get warm or bog down after doing 100 perch nonstop and I’ve never had to change a blade. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  9. I’ve tried many as believe this one is best. Roll in flour then mix sparkling water with flour till you have a thin batter (similar to tempura) then dip in panko and deep fry. They come out nice and crispy and brown and you never get the oil foaming up like with egg wash. Also can reuse the oil and they don’t seem to absorb any grease. 10. Prof T and I had a decent morning. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  11. I ran one shorter and one longer on a 2 color and the longer one took more fish. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  12. I also add varying amount of split shot 5’ above the spoon when fishing in deeper water. When in tight I run without weight and watch my turns so boards don’t stall. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  13. I personally run 50/50 mix of spoons and sticks. Sometimes they favor one over the other, sometimes it doesn’t matter. I run straight 12 lb big game mono with small snap swivels so it’s easy to change lures. When shallow I run without any weight. When out in 12 fow or deeper I add spit shot or use 2 or 3 color leadcore off the boards and drop riggers deeper. Spoons can certainly hang up and cause problems if your boards stall so it’s critical to watch your turns. I like running a good spread 6-8 lures so fish can tell me what they want as it changes day to day. That said it is better to start with small spread and build as you get experience. When bite is on a 4 lure spread is plenty to keep you busy. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  14. Might be better targeting the brown trout. Stay in 5-25 fow along shoreline and troll small stick baits and spoons at 1.8-2.2 mph. May find them anywhere from the cut to Oswego and even inside the harbor. Look for warmer water with some color to it. You may also hit some lakers, steelhead, salmon and pike. 15. That’s interesting. The ones we caught were mostly empty except one had seven 2” bluegills in it’s stomach which I thought was strange. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app

  17. I have my boat uncovered and in the garage. Engine started right up. Vacuumed it and will do some cleaning and by tonight it should be ready for spring fishing. It will need a good power washing later this spring. I may be greatly jumping the gun but it’s always better to be prepared.[emoji3] Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  18. Rather than hit the sloppy ice today I got 8 rods spooled up for browns and walleyes. 2 for shallow riggers, 4 for inline boards, and 2 with 2 color lead core off boards. Next will be uncovering the boat, putting it in my garage, and getting it ready to roll. Then wait for a launch to open. This warm rain and wind should help! Looking forward to browns, perch and then walleyes. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  19. Got this photo of the launch. Looks like it may be a while! Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  20. Last year I was able to launch at Mexico on March 10th. Anyone have any idea when the launch may open up? Was thinking with little ice cover and the current warm conditions things might open up early again. I do have my boat plowed out so it wouldn’t take a lot to get ready to fish. Probably just a pipe dream. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app

  22. I heard a ATV went through the ice off Long Point State Park Chaumont Bay. With warming temperatures, longer days, and higher sun you need to be very careful as ice conditions can change rapidly. I’m sure with the big increase in ice fishermen this year we will unfortunately see more of this in the next few weeks. Be careful out there! Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app

  23. Amazing how dumb and inconsiderate people can be. Not wishing that anyone would get injured but it would serve then right if they dropped their front end in. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app
