Very true. I once drove my vehicle onto Eel Bay and was the first on the ice that day. It was still dark and people had previously driven on the ice. For some reason I stopped and cut a hole and there was over a foot of ice. As I reentered my vehicle it was breaking light enough for me to see open water about 125 yards ahead. Lesson learned! I’ve only put 1 leg through near a dock and had a friend do the same where current ate away the ice. I also had a friend drop his new snowmobile through (in a spot he had crossed earlier) while we were fishing the river. On another occasion two friend drop through as they walked toward us. We had used a snowmobile and a 4 wheeler to get to the spot and were able to get them out. Experience has made me much more cautious. Particularly on the SLR where current can change conditions in a hurry. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app

Well, thanks to Rusty I have some Barnes Bullet to try! I have been fortunate to meet some great people on this forum that are generous sharing information. Also made some terrific friends. I’ve decided to switch to BH 209 powder. With a bit of testing I believe I will find a very good preforming load! Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app

Justin, I have shot 158 and 180 grain Hornady XTP in .357 Maximum TC Contender pistol. They seem to work well although I haven shot anything since switching to the 180 grain. Many years ago when they first allowed use of bullets rather than round balls I shot Hornady XTP pistol bullets in my grey hawk. I just discovered a few I had left. They are 240 grain. As I remember you could buy a box of 50 pretty cheap. I believed they performed well. I guess I got caught up in the accuracy and distance claims when I went to the Shockwaves. May need to try the bullets you recommended. What are you using for powder and how much? I been using Triple 7, 3 pellets. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app

I’ve had some like that but after watching a couple videos on u tube I think they aren’t predictable. Fortunately I haven’t lost a deer yet but have had a couple I didn’t find till the next morning and a couple more that went quite a ways with good hits and little or no blood trail. After doing some research on Shockwaves I think I’ll give the Barnes spitfire T EZ a try. Plenty of penetration and great accuracy but unpredictable expansion with Shockwave. Upon doing some research I found the Shockwaves are not predictable in performance. I have had several deer go well over 100 yards after good hits with little blood to trail. Here’s a photo of the bullet I found in the off shoulder of the buck I shot. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app

What a great day you had in the field. I haven’t seen rabbits like that in years! We did shoot 17 snowshoes on a hunt back in the late 70’s or early 80’s. Love to be able to hear the dogs again. Also a great way to introduce kids to hunting. I can remember hunting rabbits with my dad 60 years ago. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app

I’ve not lost any yet and have shot about 10 with shockwaves. I have used Hornady XTP pistol bullets and also powerbelts and all have worked. One question is how much expansion is needed with a .50 cal bullet? It’s already bigger than a .243 if it expanded 2X. I figure bullet placement is critical and the shockwaves shoot as accurately as my riffles. On the other hand it would expend more energy it it mushroomed better. I use to have a beagle and we had a ball running both cottontails and snowshoes. That was in the 70’s and 80’s when we had many bunnies and grouse and few deer and turkey. Now we don’t seem to have many in my area but I’d love to hear the dogs running them again. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app
