  6. In the past few days, the lab crew conducted some interesting experiments on Lake Ontario to determine whether gobies will consume any of the “bottom fry” stage of Smallmouth Bass if the male is angled off the nest and quickly returned. They were able to get some amazing footage that provides the answer. We thought it was definitely worth sharing. For those that are interested, some additional information is provided below. For several years, we’ve been investigating the relationship between the timing of bass spawning and the opening of bass season on Lake Ontario. As part of this research, we are also trying to better understand the potential impacts of gobies on bass that are still at different stages of spawning when the season opens. Gobies are often talked about as an “egg predator”, but much less is known about whether they will consume other early life stages of fish. The video associated with this post provides conclusive evidence that gobies will also quickly eat the “bottom fry” stage of Smallmouth Bass. This amazing footage shows several gobies striking and consuming bottom fry after the guarding male is angled off the nest. Another other interesting thing about this footage is that this large male was angled and released very quickly by an experienced angler, but the fish was not able to chase the gobies out of the nest when it first returned. Only after a few additional minutes of recovery was it able to protect the remaining bottom fry. During that time, several gobies were in the nest consuming the bottom fry. The last noteworthy point about this video is that it was taken 11 days after the current opening date of bass season. For best quality click HD in settings. 9. Thanks to this report and Captain Tom Ewing's Intel we were able to have a successful morning. Caught them on spoons off riggers and 10 color lead core. Most only down 55 over 100-160 fow. One was shallower off cheater . Did take one rip on dipsy on ff out 220. Had a few other releases on riggers. Beautiful day on the water Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app

  13. I caught one 19" walleye this morning. The walleye bite has been somewhat slow. Giving the bass a little rest as they got pounded this weekend. Sent from my iPad using Lake Ontario United
  14. Although slower morning than many openers we still did ok. Lots of fishing pressure out this morning. Things got slow so we left the river with 11 smallmouths and finished our limit with 4 largemouths on a small local lake. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  15. http://www.eregulations.com/newyork/fishing/jefferson-county/ Jefferson County allows no catch and release bass fishing during closed season. Fisheries biologist tell me bass numbers are down. Sent from my iPad using Lake Ontario United

  17. I notice a continued problem with anglers coming to the Thousand Islands region before the bass season and taking fish off the beds. I see it every year and they are often out of state boats.. When confronted they say they are releasing the fish which is likely true but still illegal. I try to educate them on the fact that gobies are gobbling up eggs as a result. Wise there were more of a DEC presence protecting these fish. Sent from my iPad using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  18. For me walleye bite has been poor. I've heard of a few being taken in 35-40 fow but certainly not a hot bite. Sackets and Black River have also been poor. Ogdensburg and Bsy Of Quinte have both been better areas this spring. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United

  21. After tagging out early I was trying to get my son or wife a bird this weekend. I located some birds and new their roost area. Hunted two morning with my son and one with my wife but they didn't cooperate. First morning we were set up about 300 yards from the roost and they went the other direction into a pasture. Second morning we bumped one off the roost but still had birds around us on the roost but again they moved on to the pasture. Today we set up between the pasture and the roost and they went toward where we hunted the first day. We were either unlucky or dealing with a well educated bird. Generally I can kill a bird in three days as you have them well patterned. Sent from my iPad using Lake Ontario United
  22. Nice to see a healthy crop of smaller fish. Seems I seldom catch shorts that I have to release on the river. Sent from my iPad using Lake Ontario United
  23. Fished an Indian River Lake this afternoon and had a blast catching big gills and pumpkinseeds on my flyrod. Some on a popper but most on a parachute dry dragged across the surface. Good fun and good eats. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app
