  1. With turkey tags filled and some walleyes, Browns and panfish in the freezer we made our annual trip to my brothers in Cape Cod. Although there seemed to be less big sea bass than last year there was no shortage of fish. Caught some nice ones up to 20" and a couple nice tautog as well. 2. The ones I posted on last summer had very little meat on them. Checking with fisheries biologist they thought it was sandy flesh disease. I didn't eat them. A few others were also caught in the river but none in DEC netting samples. Sent from my iPad using Lake Ontario United
  3. I hit a local lake and the bluegills crappies, pumpkin seeds, and rock bass are moving Into the shallows along the shorelines. Caught about 6 crappies, and 20 nice bluegills as well as many throwback rock bass and largemouths in a couple hours. A bobber and jig and popper and fly rod both worked well. I thinks the next week or so they should really turn on. You could see many fish in 6 fow or less. Sent from my iPad using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  4. Also goose and duck legs which are great braised. Sent from my iPad using Lake Ontario United
  5. Yep, pressure cooker would speed up the process. I use it to can venison, goose, salmon, and Browns. I sometimes forget it works great on tougher meat. Sent from my iPad using Lake Ontario United
  6. Definately need to keep it fun. As previously said, in the case of kids size doesn't matter. Kids like to be involved in all aspects of the trip; driving the boat, setting the lines, watching the graph, netting the fish, listening to the radio, etc. Plenty of snacks and drinks and just keep them involved. Amazing how quickly the pick up on things, particularly when they are assigned a job. Sent from my iPad using Lake Ontario United

  8. Looks much like the ones I reported on in the river last summer. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United
  9. After dressing and skinning my bird I breasted it, cut off the thighs for another meal. I then sectioned up all the bones including the heart, gizzard, liver, drumsticks and neck then threw them in a pot with onion, garlic, carrot, celery, dried tomato, salt and spices. Brought it to a boil and then simmered for several hours till meat easily pulled from bones. When strained it made a wonderful stock and I picked 2.3 pounds of meat off the bones which I added to the stock. I made a delicious soup and froze another batch in a gallon zip lock. It's a shame so many people just breast their birds and all that good meat is wasted. Even the drumstick are good and tender if you simmer and remove tendons. I know it's is time consuming and easy for me to do being retired. I understand that many may not want to take the time but I get at least three more meals from a bird than if I were to simple take the breast. One or more from each half breast, one from the thighs. And at least 2 from the broth and meat used for stew or soup. I have also ground the thigh, leg, heart, and gizzard and mixed with pork to make sausage. Sent from my iPad using Lake Ontario United

  15. Fished BOQ with Mr walleyes and the boys and caught about 20 total on Saturday after the big blow but did better on Sunday with everyone limiting out early. Moved to The SLR on Monday and Tuesday and caught 3 on Monday in North wind and 7 on Tuesday morning. Fun weekend with great friends. Got home after filleting fish and pick some asparagus. I love May! Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  16. I had a great day today. This morning I shot a turkey and a coyote came in and grabbed it and try to steal it. This afternoon I fished a local lake and caught a nice limit of crappies. Great start for May. I taught school for 33 years and at times coached 3 varsity sports. My kids also each played 3 sports so I understand family issues. Looking back I wonder how I fit in as much hunting and fishing as I did. Now it's hunt or fish 4-5 days a week interrupted by frequent visits to NJ to visit my kids and grandkids. I'm truly blessed!!!! Sent from my iPad using Lake Ontario United
  17. Incredible day! After having a coyote try to steal the turkey I shot this morning I decided to hit a local lake for crappies. Largest was 13" and a bunch 11-12"! Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  18. Just when I was considering leaving due to wind and rain I saw 3 turkeys at far end of the field. Looked to my right and there were 2 more much closer closing on my decoy. Two came right in and I shot one but other two birds kept coming my way so I stayed in the blind not wanting to spook the other birds. Immediately after I took this photo, a coyote appeared and ran up and grabbed my turkey and started dragging it away! I had to shout and move to get it to drop the bird. I almost shot it but was trying to get a video. The other birds spooked so now the field was empty. Wish I could have videoed the whole thing or shot the coyote but what a story to tell. 19. Only 2 days till I'll be fishing in Bay of Quinte with Mr Walleye and friends for the weekend walleye opener. Then on Monday will be fishing below Cardinal Ontario on the SLR for a couple days. After that will likely be hitting Sackets and Chaumont. All this while trying to locate a turkey which thus far has eluded me. Wish May was a longer month as I'll also be hitting Cape Cod for sea bass and stripers, crappie and bullhead fishing , and fly fishing the St Regis. So many choices but fortunately I'm retired! 20. Had a hen come right to my Jake decoy and we were calling back and forth. Unfortunately the toms that were in the area yesterday were not around today. Got some video but don't know how to post it. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  21. I'll be hitting the walleyes in Bay Of Quinte. Sent from my iPad using Lake Ontario United
  22. Well, opening morning and after not seeing much while scouting I had a couple birds gobbling on the roost. Unfortunately after fly down they headed the other direction so I moved my blind for tomorrow morning hunt. Went back toward my car and set up and had two birds come in. They returned two more times and one had a very small beard and I let him walk. Also saw several deer and it was a beautiful morning to be out. Mr. walleye got a tom this morning as did another friend of mine. Sent from my iPad using Lake Ontario United
  23. Fish a large SLR bay midday today. Fished in 6 fow which was pretty clear and perch were visible everywhere. Needed to sort but still some nice fish. Ended up with just over 6 lbs. of fillets Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  24. Fished with ProfT and Mr Walleye out of Mexico Point. Ran west and found cold clear water (39 -40 degree) and no fish so ran back to Mexico launch where water had color and was 43 degrees but no fish. Ran to Selkirk and hit a 5.2 pounder on rigger in 10 fow. Water was muddy and 43-44 degrees. Stayed in that area and did't move a rod fishing from 7-18 fow. Trolled back toward the ramp with no success so moved out into 20 fow and hit an 8.2 pounder on a bay rat near the surface. Could not find any pattern so called it a day after putting in 6 hours. Others we talked to also had a slow day. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  25. Looks like Kring's is about done. Still plenty of perch but size has decreased significantly. Still managed a half pail in a few hours yesterday but lots of sorting. Time to hit the Lake for Browns tomorrow and try some other spots for perch. Also crappies and bullheads should be available soon. Sent from my iPad using Lake Ontario United
