  1. I always wanted to take fly rods on the boat and drift or anchor when we hit a pod trolling shallow water. We've often talked about it but you're doing it! Sent from my iPad using Lake Ontario United
  2. Seeing lots of birds out strutting their stuff. Winter groups are breaking up and birds seem to be very active. Good numbers .of birds have been spotted in my area. Saw one group last week with 12 longbeards! Still a little early to really scout as they change their habits as the grass greens up. Also I've hunted my areas many years and they seem to frequent the same roosts and strut zones every year so I don't need to do a great deal of scouting. 3. Been hitting them pretty well the last week and catching a pail or two each of the last 4 trips. Perch we caught today were mostly spawned out. Nice average size. Mr Walleye caught a pail like this one I caught. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United mobile app
  4. There are some hard core crappie fisherman up here. They can be caught in the river but many of the Indian River Lakes also have good populations. Timing is everything. When your timing is right and they move into shallow water they are pretty easy to target. Sent from my iPad using Lake Ontario United
  5. Many of the marinas and bays have crappies that move in as the water warms and bait moves in. Try fishing around docks, overhanging or downed trees or other cover in bays or up tribs. Minnows and a float are a traditional method. After this early bite, which may begin before ice out, they move in to spawn in similar areas. This is generally in May. 6. Fished three times in the last week and caught over a pail of perch each outing. Lots of throw backs but also some over 12". Froze up 15 packages this morning. Today some of them were already spawned out so the bite won't last. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United
  7. I'm away for a few days. Likely fishable very soon. I'll give you an update when I return.
  8. Not sure if it will be Lisbon, Chaumont, Black River Bay, or Quinte. So little time, so many choices. Likely to hit them all in the first couple weeks.
  9. Have to agree with a lot of what has been said. I'm a retired teacher and guided summers on the SLR for 18 years. Mine was more of a hobby business but I do know it would be tough to depend on only guiding for a year round income. You certainly would need good business sense and breakdowns can quickly cut profits. I would certainly start out part time, build your clients and see where it takes you. One other thing, it does become a job. The recreational enjoyment goes away and you look forward to a change from days on the same water. I downsized and now enjoy taking friends and family and can affordably do it with my smaller boat. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United
  10. Goose Bay still ice covered. Sent from my iPad using Lake Ontario United
  11. Heard some guys fished yesterday and the gap was opening up. Went back to check this morning and jam ice blew in to make it unfishable today. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United
  12. Darn I'll be away from Friday- Wednesday. Be there after I return. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United
  13. Lay all day in a muddy field with hundreds of all types of decoys out. Thousands flew over high but few even gave us a look. Tough birds to fool. Sent from my iPad using Lake Ontario United
  14. Still looks like lots of jam ice floating down the channel. Warmer weather and rain may open up some spots but guys were on the ice in French Creek yesterday. Sent from my iPad using Lake Ontario United
  15. I also don't use split shot when in shallow but do use them 5-6 feet in front of spoons and sticks in deeper water. Need to be careful letting spoons out or on turns if in shallow as they may snag. Sent from my iPad using Lake Ontario United
  16. Hopefully after a couple more very cold nights things will turn around and ice will go fast. Sent from my iPad using Lake Ontario United
  17. Sounds like it will be a while before we can get back out. Thought we were in for a nice early spring when I got out Feb. 28th but things have certainly changed. Sent from my iPad using Lake Ontario United
  18. We tried today and came up empty. Saw lots of Canadas, some snows and ducks but none coming to us. Sent from my iPad using Lake Ontario United
  19. Hard to believe the river was wide open a month ago and now looking out toward Canada there is ice as far as the eye can see. With cold nights forecast for the next week I don't think boats will have access and I certainly wouldn't trust the ice. Hope the perch are around when the ice decides to leaves. 20. Sk8, Yep, some was my dads, some perhaps his dad's and a bunch I acquired over time. Some is from Prof T when he did a clean out this winter. I'm sure it nostalgic to many in our age group. Sent from my iPad using Lake Ontario United
  21. Prof T, You picked a good time to be south. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United
  22. Thanks Landshark. Already had a couple offers. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United
  23. I have bunch of old lures that I'm looking to sell as they are just sitting around. Not sure of the value and was wondering where I might get them priced or sold.uu Sent from my iPad using Lake Ontario United
  24. Landshark, Let me know if you see a weather break on the horizon. Sent from my iPad using Lake Ontario United
  25. I agree with Landshark. I use 12lb. Mono for Browns and walleyes for sticks and spoons. 12 lb. Nanofill for jigging with barrel swivel and fluorocarbon leader and the same for bottom bouncers with spinner. Trolling walleyes on the SLR however is a whole different game with different set up and gear. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United
