Not a lot of birds around on the SLR or Eastern end of the Lake. Hunted near Gallo Island yesterday and only got 3 buffies, 1 gadwall, and 1 whistler. Saw mallards, broadbills, whistlers, Oldsquaws, swans, gees and gadwall but not in any great numbers. Also checked out around Fox and Grenadier Islands and no big rafts seen. I've taken several deer with a TC Contender, 10" barrel with with 2.5x scope in .357 maximum (no longer manufactured). It seems to perform about like a muzzle loader. Also have .22 and .223 with 10" barrels and all are very accurate (as accurate as most rifles). For longer shots you need a good rest or shooting stick. Pistols are very handy to carry and good for blinds and tree stands but it does takes a bit more time to get set up for the shot. You also need to practice to know your limits. Just picked up a case of Winchester Xpert 3" steel shot at Gander Mountain. They give you 10% off on a case so the cost was $12.15 a box. I have used these for quite a while and in my opinion they preform well, at least in my gun. Speed is equal or faster than most of the premium shells that cost twice as much or more. Shooting alongside some buddies that use higher price shells I haven't really notice any significant difference. I also have researched comparison and there seems to be minimal difference. Hunted my buddy's marsh this morning using layout blinds along the edge of the marsh. After placing goose and mallard decoys we began to have birds arriving in small groups. The birds were apparently feeding on grass along the edge of the marsh where rains had raised the water. We ended up shooting 6 geese, 4 mallards and 2 black ducks. I also froze the heart and liver and have even taken the tongue on occasion. I got 4.2lbs of meat off the bones and few gallons of stock. I'll take the tallow off the top of the stock tomorrow and freeze it up with meat. No waste which I like. Sent from my iPad using Lake Ontario United

I like to cut up my deer whenever possible. I take my time but know I get every scrap of meat and it's all beautiful. Last week the morning after I shot a buck I skinned and boned out all but the front shoulders and put it in my refrigerator. Today I boned the front shoulders, trimmed it all and took off the silver skin, fat, blood spots, and grizzle. Then I cut it up into steaks, loins, tenderloins, sirloins, sirloin tips, jerky and grinding meat. I put it back in the refrigerator for a few more days of aging and will then vacuum seal it, label it and grind the burger mixing in some pork and fat. I'll make some into breakfast sausage, some into Italian sausage and leave some for plain burger. I even save all the bones and roast them and then boil them with onions, carrots, garlic and garden herbs. After picking the meat from the bones I freeze the stock and meat in gallon zip locks and can use it for an quick soup or stew. That's my afternoon project. I may not be fast but the results are worth my time. It generally takes me two or three sessions but that way I don't get too tired and careless. Sent from my iPad using Lake Ontario United

This week was more confirmation on why I love living in the Thousand Island region and am blessed to be retired and healthy. Monday night I harvested a buck with my muzzle loader. Being extremely warm I boned it out on Tuesday and put it in my garage refrigerator to age. Wednesday a buddy and I caught three walleyes on a quick evening trip on the SLR. This morning another buddy and I hit his marsh and shot 2 black ducks and 3 wood ducks. The regular deer season begins this Saturday but due to a rainy weekend I have a couple goose hunts scheduled with two more groups of friends. I am truly blessed to have a great group of friends and to live in an area with so many varied outdoor opportunities to enjoy. Sent from my iPad using Lake Ontario United

Great story Mike. I've seen fishers while deer hunting on two occasions. Very neat animals. I was once sitting on a log pile and I heard a rabbit squealing right underneath me. A moment latter it ran out and had a weasel attached to it's neck. I watch the tumbling struggle for 30 minutes after which the weasel dragged the rabbit back under the log pile. Sure wish I had a video of it. Those are the types of natural dramas that non hunters will likely never view. Sent from my iPad using Lake Ontario United -

Went out this afternoon hoping to beat the rain. Saw a couple scrapes under apple trees on my way to an old tree stand. Sat in the stand for about an hour and a nail pulled out of the seat. That made me uneasy so I climbed down and went back by a green field near a bedding area near the rubs. Didn't have a good place to sit so I lay on the ground with my head on my back pack. After a short time a deer stepped out of the bedding area into the green field and was about 125 yards away facing me head on. I knew it was a basket 6 or 8 and soon another small spike stepped out. They were curious and moved closer and the spike moved to my left out of view. I had my gun resting on my knees and the larger buck moved closer and turned broadside. Although I was still on my back I was certain I had a great rest so took the shot at around 80 yards. Could hear the hit and saw the buck going away dragging a front leg. He went further than I anticipated but fortunately after a search found him piled up about 150 yards away. No blood trail but he was hit behind the shoulder and His chest cavity was full of blood. Always amazes me how far they sometimes go after a hard hit. I was fortunate to find him as it soon began to rain and thunder and lightning. As Prof T said the SLR bite has slacked off. Not sure if they are headed toward Quinte or down river to Ogdensburg. Both areas have good fall fishing. Will likely make a run up to Mr Walleye's camp for some late season trophies sometime before ice up. Sent from my iPad using Lake Ontario United -

Nice hunt. We ended 3 birds shy of our three man limit. Great early flurry and then things slowed quickly. Tons of woodies that we had to pass on.
