I haven't been seeing as many birds but with less hens the Toms seem as though they are responding better. I would like to see the state reduce fall harvest to one bird to let population recover.
We hit Lisbon and Ogdensburg for about 5 hours today and got he skunk. Can't say we even had a hit . Saw about 5 Fish caught by other anglers. Sad one released that was over 25". All appeared to be jigging except one using worm and spinner.
I believe there is a problem when many 28+" females are being kept. I think some type of slot might help raise awareness. It seems to be working in Quinte.
Justin,
I met many nice people over the years I guided. Very few were a pain. Several still keep in close contact. I know you will be a good one and hope you enjoy it. I decided I enjoyed taking friends and family and not have the pressure that I put myself under when I guided. Not sure that worked as I'm still pretty driven.
After having one move away from me off the roost I move to three other spots and finally worked one into range. it flew off when I shot. I flat out missed it, It happens and at least there is a lot of season left.
I agree the the bird population is down although I have been fortunate to see and hear some birds and harvested one opening day. Keep at it cause things often turn around in a hurry!
I fished in my buddy Don's boat and we got a late start. Hit a 32" pike right off and latter a 26" male walleyes that was spewing milt. Makes me wonder if the spawn is over. Didn't see any other fish netted. Ended the day with a 29" pike and a 18" released smallmouth. We only fish from 8-12:00. The smaller pike had what appeared to be tapeworms and I ended up tossing it. After doing some research I guess if they are frozen or cooked they won't hurt you but there is the yuck factor. My friends fished Quinte and said it was very slow. Haven't heard how Lisbon was.
It was a beautiful opening morning. After roosting 3 toms and 10 hens last light I was worried that the toms might not come in this morning. Fortunately one spied my decoy and after two yelps ran in and it was all over by 6:30.
After posting about my engine problems I've had several offers to fish with LOU members. Thanks so much for the generous offers. I believe I have a ride with a buddy I was going to take on Sat. And may run to Quite to fish with friends on Sunday and Monday. Great guys I met on this forum!
It's a 4 stroke and dip stick was all milky. I bought the boat at Martins and they serviced it this spring. They will be doing repairs but it is a busy time of year at marinas.
When I pulled my boat this morning after fishing Browns at Selkirk I notice foamy oil coming out the exhaust. Took boat to Martins and they believe I blew the head gasket. Now my boat will be down for a while at the start of walleye season. I do have a 16 foot Gheenoe with a 6 hp so I won't be completely grounded and I will be chasing turkeys his weekend. Things could definitely be much worse.
