That full moon has me thinking walleyes.
-
We started setting up before sunrise and immediately began marking numerous fish and some bait. Most fish were down 100-130 near the bottom. Set two dipsy rods and two riggers and didn't move a rod for a while. Changed up depths and leads and finally had one on the dipsy with FF out 300. By now the charters were in the area working water inside us but soon they too were fishing in the 120-135 fow range. An hour latter the other dipsy rod took a hit and we landed our second fish of the morning again on a green dot flasher and green home-tied fly. Another hour and another scream on the dipsy. Unfortunately this one dropped off right at boat-side at the net. We had a couple releases off the rigger but never had a fish on a rigger rod. Tried spoon and FF with cheater spoons and various leads but couldn't get them to fire. Also ran a 400 copper with spoon, FF and J plug which had no takers. Today seemed to be a wire dipsy day for us. Both fish were males about 16 lbs.

St Lawrence-Lake O: Full moon muskies.
Kevin J Legg replied to EsoxAC3's topic in Musky, Tiger Musky & Pike (ESOX)
I've had my very best catches fishing the St Lawrence during the July and August full moon periods this summer and I'm looking forward to the upcoming one in Sept. Not that it's been bad fishing during many different phases throughout the summer. -
The Chaumont, Black River Bay fish do seem to disappear by the end of May. I fish the Alex Bay region of the St Lawrence from around July 4th through the fall and catch a mixed bag, many 20-26" walleyes with a few smaller and a some in the 8-10 pound range. Interestingly, seldom do I catch any under 16". In August there is some excellent fishing on some deeper shoals like Charity and Galoo Island in 30-50 fow out in the lake on both the US and Canadian side. These are often 8-12 pound fish and I believe are the same fish we catch latter in the fall (before ice up) in BOQ not the juveniles. I also have fished BOQ for many years and catch many smaller fish(eaters) in the spring and pigs in the fall and through the ice. It certainly appears the larger fish roam out into the big lake in the summer and early fall and return in late fall. Both Quinte and Chaumont had good ice fishing last winter and good spring fishing as well. Could some of the Chaumont, Black River Bay fish be roaming down into the river to feed on the abundant gobies? I'm not certain as there is a good population throughout the river and an excellent population down by Ogdensburg and Lisbon. Incidentally last winter many small sub 18" fish were caught down near Ogdensburg likely due to there stocking program. I'm fortunate to live in a great area for both eaters and trophies and I agree that the ones 18-24" are the best to eat. I also agree in "releasing a pig too big for the pan and too small for the wall". I've caught many over 10# but have yet to hang a 13# and I'm not certain I'll get her mount when it happens. It would certainly be interesting to do a tag study on these fish to learn exactly where they are roaming.

Fished the early shift this morning and got skunked. I put in 2 1/2 hours and had no hits but a rock bass. This is only the second time I've been shut out this summer fishing walleyes on the river. Current, weeds and wind were all tough but I was still able to cover my normal spots but today I came up empty. It happens.

Took my brother and sister-in-law for an early morning on the river. First pass we hit one on the bottom and then doubled up with one on the long line. Ended up going 4 for 5. The one we lost felt like a pig. Others were 4.5, 5.6, 6.8 lbs. Check out the small gobies that were in the stomachs of two of the fish.

Yep they are screamers.

Seeing the abundant small bait in the stomachs of the ones I'm catching at night, perhaps they aren't feeding during the day. They are absolutely stuffed with bait. Kind of unusual as they often have nothing in the stomachs. Also, the 10# plus one we caught yesterday changes my opinion on the big ones leaving the area.

If it's like up my way theirs lots of competition for access and a lot of leased property especially in the early season. The only way to find spots is to put in the miles to scout and ask. It is somewhat easier during the regular season when many are deer hunting and the limits are lower.

I'm sure it has a great deal to do with forage and possibly migration patterns. I'm actually not sure if these river fish are residents or if they migrate . At times I've seen them spitting up alewives or large gobies and yesterday one was absolutely stuffed with small gobies. Must have had a dozen about 2.5-3" in it's stomach. Makes me think I should run a small stick and see what happens. The big fish on the lake definately migrate and are fairly predictable although a little less so this year.
