I actually run 10-12 lb. Big Game mono on line counters when using boards with long leads running crank and stick baits when fishing big open water like Quinte in the fall or Lake Ontario in the spring. I use a swivel and about 3-4' of flouro leader or no leader. I also use a snap for the ease of quickly changing lures I use the same rigs running spoons and sticks for shallow spring browns on the lake but use snap swivels on spoons. On the river I use spinning reels on long rods when longlining cranks. I run 20lb. fireline or power pro and 20 lb. flouro leader due to zebra mussels. I often use split shot ahead of the swivel not only to get deeper but to keep weeds and water fleas off the lure. Longlining works for me in depth inside 35 ' The river is very different with constantly changing current, and structure that often limit you to short trolls using shorter line lengths. That's one reason I often use very heavy bottom bouncers, heavy braid, 25 Lb. flouro leader and stout gear in deeper water where I sometimes troll in 40 fow or deeper with current. (Not a fun or easy way to fish but it can be effective)

I couldn't agree with sk8man more. Some days it just isn't going to happen. Fortunately with experience those days become less frequent and we know Justin has experience.

I saw some nice gills off a dock a few days ago and took my neighbor kids (age 4 and 2) over tonight .They had a ball and caught 28 and a bonus bass. They watched me fillet them up and took home a couple meals of nice fillets. David ask his mom if we could do it again tomorrow before bed. I think I'm building some future fisher persons.

I fished Chippewa today and didn't catch or see any bass shallow. I did find bass out in 25 fow chasing bait and breaking on the surface. I didn't have any top waters but wonder if I could have got them up top.even in the deep water. I. also marked a bunch of fish in that depth and caught a couple decent ones trolling TD 9. I'd say they are off the bed and I would look for them in the 20-30 foot range.

I frequently fish the near Alexandria Bay and have many posts over the years on fishing the river. There are many techniques that work. Black bucktails tipped with a piece of worm, worm and spinners off bottom bouncers, jigging spoons, trolling with down riggers, deep diving cranks or heavy bottom bouncers can all be effective. Fish current breaks in 20-40 fow ( 30-35 seems to be best for me) and look for pods of bait. It's not easy fishing and requires some practice as you are often fishing in heavy current with a changing bottom contour and usually need to be near bottom so expect to loose some gear to zebra mussel cut offs. I also do better fishing in low light conditions and often do well at night when no one is on the water.send me a pm if you want to get additional information.

I'm catching some trolling for walleyes near Alexandria Bay. Those fish still are carrying eggs so I wouldn't be surprised if there are still new fish on beds in 5-15 fow. Last week I caught them in that depth at Chippewa Bay.

Bait certainly has a lot to do with why they are there and other places throughout the river. If you have current, structure and bait there will be walleyes nearby. The fish I caught today were spitting up bait. I believe these fish arrive this time of year from spawning sites. Perhaps they come from Chaumont and Black River area or even from Canada. There is a healthy population from the lake throughout the river and the population around Ogdensburg seems to be very good (perhaps due to stocking). This winter was a banner year for them through the ice in Chaumont and around Ogdensburg. Glad to see the population seems to continue to be growing. The future of this fishery seems bright indeed.

Way to go JT. I'll be hitting the eyes this week. May also see if I can fid some browns or a salmon . -
I fished a small Indian River Lake and took a limit of 12-14" largemouths from my Gheenoe this morning in an hour and a half. Low tech relaxing fishing using 5" Senkos along outside weed edges. I've been watching a pair of loons raising two babies for the last couple weeks. It's incredible how fast they grow and mature. The babies are already diving and fishing for themselves and have started getting white feathers on their breast. They are now nearly half the size of their parents.

I was at a local Indian river Lake yesterday visiting a friend and was surprised to see some a number of large bluegills on beds in very shallow water near his dock.I'll return soon to investigate.

I have been using Nanofil line with flouro leaders on a couple 360 Penn Slammer reels the last couple years. It floats doesn't coil and doesn't seem to tangle like some of the braids. It also casts extremely well. I'm still using a couple Bass Pro medium action IM7 rods that have served me well for years.

Pike/Muskies Thousand islands

I frequently fish the river for walleyes in 30-60 fow with riggers, bottom bouncers and deep cranks and almost never catch a pike. I catch some good ones trolling up on the lake but unfortunately the pike fishing on the river has really dropped off. I believe you'd have a much better chance targeting bass and walleyes. I've probably caught a couple incidental pike and one smallish muskie in the last few years while walleye and bass fishing. I do catch some through the ice but seldom over 8 lbs. -
