Salmonchop, I completely agree with you, even thought they claim 10% greater penetration with this load. I do my homework and prefer to get them inside 30 yards. That said I do feel these loads outperform previous Winchesters and are probably ethical to use to 50 yards. As you stated, if there is ever any question let them walk. I roosted a nice flock tonight so we'll see what takes place in the morning. I never seem to get them when I think I have them figured out.

weights and spoons
Kevin J Legg replied to henrybud's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
I use 1 medium split shot when shallower than 10 feet and a couple larger ones when deeper than 10 feet. Make sure not to let spoons out to fast or make sharp turns when using weight or they will hang up. I'm going to set up a couple leadcores and see if they make a difference. -

Spent a frustrating morning fishing and only caught 3 browns. Two 13" and one barely a keeper. Tried different depths from 5-25 fow and numerous sticks and spoons but couldn't find them. Water temp was 41-44 degrees. Very clear by Selkirk and muddy from the Salmon River to Sandy Pond. Didn't see anyone else catch any but boats were spread out and appeared to be looking.

split rings or not

I run them with good black snap swivels and they work fine for me. -

My brother and sister-in-law are visiting for a fishing weekend. We hit the lake today and went 8-10 on cookie cutter browns. Water was pretty muddy all the way up toward Selkirk. Caught most on silver/chartruse spoons but a couple on sticks. 3 off riggers and the rest off boards. Most in 8-12 fow. It was better earlier in the mornng and slowed after 10:00. Hope to get them into some perch on the river and perhaps hit the lake again Monday.

I drove to Goose Bay and Kring's this morning but did not fish. I did talk to a former student that has been catching them pretty well fom shore but wasn't dong well in the wind today. I only saw one boat at Kring's but the ramp at both Kring's and Goose Bay are open. I have also talked to a couple guys that have been hitting the crappies well both on the river and at Black Lake. I'm sure this cold weather and north wind has shut that bite down. I'm planning on fishing locally tomorrow and fishing the lake for browns on Friday.

I got my both my Canadian hunting and fishing license this year. Since I duck hunt in Canada I also got a PAL permit for guns and a Nexis card. This made it easier to check in by phone when hunting and going to shore or anchoring. Everyone on board needed a Nexus card but once we figured it out it worked pretty well. I believe as long as you don't drop anchor or go to shore you can report in by phone while fishing. As said, you need passports and bithdates for all on board. They will issue you a number for the day which you must write down.

Anyone use weights with stickbaits ?
Kevin J Legg replied to mbald123's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
As others have said weights are fine in deeper water. I generally simply put various size and combinations of splitshot about 5' up from the stick bait or spoon. If I'm in shallow water (8" or less) I generally run with either no weight or a small split shot ahead of the spoon. This alows me to troll in water as shallow as 5-6'.
