Sorry I did't see your post yesterday Hope your day went well as it was a gorgeous day to be on the ice.

I've never experienced a day with more waterfowl on the move. Geese in nearly every field and any open water. Thousands of Canadas, Snows, and ducks (mallards, pintails, blacks an,d woodies. I managed to shoot my firsrt two snows today. They certainly are more challenging than Canadas. We could have shot50 of them if they were legal but fun to watch come in 15 yards over your head!

Early I fish sticks and stinger spoons off boards in 6-20 fow trolling at 2.5-3.5 mph. 10-12 lb. test back 50-150' off boards works fine. As stated fish in colored water and don't hesitate to make a move if an area isn't producing. I fish out of Mexico, Port Ontario, Stony Creek and Henderson and all can be good. As water warms, stained inlets with a few degrees warmer water are generally great areas to look. When most water is clear and 38 degrees and you find colored water that is 42 degrees you definately want to work that area. Latter in the season move out deeper with riggers and other deeper tactics and you can stay on the browns well into the summer. Generally if you hit a fish, there will be more in the area. I've got some shalow areas marked on my GPS that produce year after year. Water color and temperature are key.

Also no trucks on the ice but plenty of wheelers.

Lots of ice and fishermen and the holes are definately getting larger as water runs down them and eats ice up so you need to keep and eye out. I took a newbie this morning and he had never icefished so we set 10 tipups with bass minnows. He was kept busy catching and releasing bass and small pike and we also caught some panfish jigging. He had a ball but it wasn't too productive for fillets.

I have used 3" and 3.5" and don't see a huge difference. I personally don't notice the recoil except when patterning loads. I ve killed them with 4, 5 and 6 shot and now generally use #5. As peviously stated, inside 30 yards it doesn't much matter. My wife flattens them with 20 gauge 6's. That said, premium shells may make a difference on occasion. If you chose to shoot at beyond 40 yards do your homework and find what works with your gun and chock. I also plan on trying the new Winchester Longbeard and I agree that a 20 yard shot is more thrilling than a 45 yarder.

I tried Krings today and only caught few keepers. I talked to a former student who hit them yesterday but not today. Taped a bunch of holes and fished inside and outside the gapsbut could find many today. Not sure where to go tomorrow.

Fished Loti this morning lts of dinks but not many to keep. I need to find some fish!

Les, I also wish you a rapid recovery. I enjoy your post and our comunications. I remember fishing the Seneca derby about 40 years ago when was at Hobart and when I lived in Phelps as a kid. Quick rcovery and good fishing!

I was at Kring's Point this afternoon and saw the ice breaker go by opening the channel. Didn't seem to have any effect on the ice near Krings. I only caught a few dinks in the gaps.

Took a drive over yesterday just looking. Still trucks and wheelers driving on the ice but ramp is rutted. They\re also driving on at Eel Bay and it looks like South Bay has access as well. With better weather coming I'll be posting a report this week.

Optomistic for spring
Kevin J Legg replied to Kevin J Legg's topic in New York Fishing Reports - Lake Ontario (South Shore)
I 'm looking forward to some busy time starting Wednesday! Perch fishing the ice till the boat can be launched. -
Definately wouldn't try it on public land or anywhere you could possibly encounter another hunter. On private land it would be interesting to try. Also a safe way that would be fun to try would be with a camera during preseason but you'd risk spooking the birds. I sometimes will photgragh them in April. It's mch easier to gain access to photogph then to hunt. Here's one I took a few years ago.

Nice Tom choo-choo! I've seen them strutting in the snow up here as well. I don't think May is going to have to enough days to do everything I will be wanting to do at that time. I enjoy chasing browns on the lake but also like turkey hunting, walleye, pike, crappie, perch and bullhead fishing. I would also like to try the Hudson for stripers and may even try to fit in a trip to my brothers at Cape Cod. Oh yea, also stream trout in the latter part of the month. I also may be headed to Florida to do some fishing with a buddy at the end of April. I wish May had more than 31 days! -

I still try to get one a year if available as I haven't been as successful with the deer as in the past.

I think I'm a little like the birds I've noticed this week, Optomistic for spring! I've seen robins, geese, turkey vultures, redwings and a rumors of a killdeer. Sooooooooo, I put new line and leaders on my brown trout rods, got out my spoons and stick baits, charged my boat batteries, cranked over my outboard and am about an hour away from being ready to launch on the big lake. Only problem is the lake may be a long way away from being ready for me.

Mexico Bay 3/16

Wow I thought it was a strange post. I remember cathing many browns that year in March. -
I use to do the same on Seneca Tribs. Justin, when I was at Hobart in the early 70's. It was fun and pretty productive. One spring I lived on stocked trout, smelt and a road kill deer!

Like to get together sometime too.
