  1. One winter we caught 13 burbot fishing Chaumont Bay. They must have been on the shoal ready to spawn. They were very good eating. Caught some on tip-ups and others jigging for perch. Incidentally burbot are not the same as bowfin (dogfish) they are a fresh water cod but are scaleless like a mudpuppy.
  2. I have fished the Grasse for bass with a fly rod and they are abundant but in general, not real large. That being said, I have seen episodes of "Rod and Reel Stream Side" where Bill Meisner caught some nice muskies fishing the Grasse. It would be floatable in a kayak or small boat and is wadable in many areas. You might be able to find this past episodes by doing a search. I believe it has potential and is not heavily fished in many areas. I've thought of giving it a try myself.
  3. Lets see. I've lost many lead depth finder, a leatherman, hook out, jaw spreader, many jigs, a couple jig pole (one when a fish took it down the hole). .Also lost a trolling rod, reel, flasher/fly, and rod holder when a salmon ripped it off the boat. On the other had I have recovered 2 nice lost rods and reels one I hooked in Black River and one in Butterfield Lake two landing nets (one a nice heavy long handled one from Lake Ontario and I was able to recatch a lost jig pole lost through a hole. I even once landed a salmon on my fly rod when I snagged someones broken line. Not to high jack this thread but it would be interesting to hear some other unusual catches and recoveries.
  4. Yep, 7.3 lb. smallmouth was a pig.
  5. I caught one pushing 5 lbs. on Butterfield Lake and a couple over 3 last week. Very common to catch them on the Indian River Lakes and St Lawrence Bays especially on late the ice.
  6. I actually kept them separate this time but have mixed them.
  7. Hit Chaumont again today and couldn't find the perch. Only caught about a dozen and not real big. Quit early went to the gym and spent the afternoon grinding goose, turkey, and venison sausage. (Italian, breakfast, and kielbasa) and made a venison meatloaf. Now I'm bushed.
  8. I haven't been out much lately due to illness in my wife's family. We do eat lots of fish and game My friends and relatives enjoy it as well. I have a bunch of goose and venison thawing to grind into sausage tomorrow . May fish again tomorrow and there are tournament the next two weekends.
  9. Fished Chaumont Bay today and caught about 50 perch. Most in the 8-10" range but a few larger. Took wheeler out from boat ramp. Plenty of ice.
  10. I guess I'll have to settle for a day of ice fishing tomorrow. I hear talk that they may change the season in the Northern Zone to match the Western zone next season.
  11. What a great looking bunch of birds. Reward for your hard work. Congrats. Been years since I've even seen a canvasback. Maybe next year I'll get a chance.
  12. I'm jealous
  13. Mud Bay is usually another spot that gets a lot of play up this way.
  14. Sounds like my season might be over as there are very limited places to launch.
  15. I get to Henderson a lot in the spring also so it shouldn't be hard to make a connection.
  16. Metal Head, I checked my shed and I do have the metal strap for the old Loggy climber. You're welcome to it as it's of no use to me. I live in the Thousand Islands so just need to figure out how to get it to you. If you want send me a PM with phone number and we can figure something out. Not sure it will work but you might be able to tape a piece of pipe insulation on the climber if you can't find the rubber piece.
  17. I use to save all the front legs and when I got a bunch I cooked them up like chicken wings and called them rabbit wings.
  18. Nice job. We're due to have wind chill of -30 tomorrow but a warm up this weekend.
  19. Metal Head, I had a stand stolen a couple years ago and may still have the metal strap out in my shed. 'llI check and let you know.
  20. Great way to start
  21. I have a nice pair of whistlers for a buddy that wants to have them mounted. Hope to hunt Canada this week and perhaps the western end of Lake Ontario as well.
  22. Matt, I also mix in some pork butt for a bit more fat and flavor. Not too bad. If I can't eat them I feel bad shooting them. That's why I pass on Mergansers and Old Squaw are marginal. I do have friends that use them training their.
  23. Sounds like a fun shoot. I generally grind the seas ducks and use them to make sausage. Any other suggestions?
  24. Lots of people fishing up north. Goose Bay, Eel Bay, Chippewa Bay, Black Lake, to name a few. We did get about 8" of snow this weekend which will make the going a bit more difficult and insulate the ice that has formed but it's going down well below zero tonight. Tug Hill got hammered with about 5' of snow but we missed all the lake affect last week.
