Hunted with my old friend Alan Hunter, his son Mike and grandson Brendan. Brendan got his first duck and grandpa couldn't be outdone. I can remember taking Mike for his first duck hunt many years ago!. Slow morning but well worth getting up to see a beautiful sunrise on the marsh and Slash got two retrieves..

Great stuff. Love to see a young generation getting involved.

Actually we washed, dried, and rested him and took him again this morning. He did another stellar job. At it again on Monday and Tuesday.

We had a great opener. Five shooters with a limit of woodies, 4 mallards, and a teal. Slash did a great jog of retrieving, even though he's not a lab!.

First off congratulations on a successful hunt! I'm certainly not against introducing youths to hunting as I taught school for 33 years and am a former Hunter Safety Instructor. However, the state land I tried to hunt on Monday was nearly devoid of birds due to the youth hunt. Others I talked to said they experienced the same on other state land. First year we've ever hunted with zero flushes and with many hunters afield we only heard a handful of shots. I'm afraid with the special privileges allowed to the youth hunts that there may be a backlash from some senior hunters if it disrupts their long traditions. I know there are concerns over the youth deer hunt coinciding with the bow season. Not sure what the solution is.

We fish right up till ice up and it seems the latter the better and they catch them well through the ice. It's a great place for big fish

We had another great shoot on the next to last day of the early season. The dogs worked great.

If you want a trophy( 10+ lbs.) Quinte is hard to beat right before ice up but the whole Eastern end of Lake Ontario is also a great place to fish eyes. I'm personally getting into the hunting mode but will likely make a few more runs for salmon and walleyes throughout the fall. Oh, and I should give muskies a try as I've never really given them a serious effort because hunting always seems to get in the way. So many choices and so little time!

Trench in Henderson

Thanks for the report. -
We had a great hunt this morning. After harvesting our limit and driving the trucks and trailer to the decoy for a photo op. a flock decided to lite in the decoys. We loaded a gun and handed it to the camera man (who stopped to see how we had made out) and he got in on the action.

9-7 Mexico bay pm

Sounds like great advice. I'd also add don't be afraid to change things up if your program is not working ( patients isn't what it's cracked up to be in fishing). Experiment with lead lengths, color, speed, lures ect and pay attention to details. If you catch one using a certain technique duplicate that technique with a second rig. If you develop a pattern change most everything up to that pattern. If things go dead start experimenting again. Every day can be different and things can change throughout the day. -
Goose Bay itself is pretty weed chocked this time of year particularly with the low water conditions. Look for pike along the drop offs outside of the shallow bay. Walleyes like current and low levels of light and for someone unfamiliar with the river, night time fishing can be tough. Look for smallmouths on deep water shoals 30-65 fow with worms and crabs working well. You may be able to pick up some largemouths in open pockets in the weeds or on top water.

Fishing ReportLonglegg Your Name / Boat Name: ============== TRIP OVERVIEW ============== Date(s):9?6 Time on Water:5:30-10:00 Weather/Temp: Wind Speed/Direction:S 10 Waves: 2-3 Surface Temp: 73 Location: LAT/LONG (GPS Cords): =============== FISHING RESULTS =============== Total Hits: 5 Total Boated:3 Species Breakdown:Kings Hot Lure: fly/flasher Trolling Speed: 2.2 Down Speed: Boat Depth: 100-140 Lure Depth: 60-115 ==================== SUMMARY & FURTHER DETAILS I fished Saturday and caught a limit of 9. Today instead of fifty boats there were about 10. The predicted 1 footers or less turned out to be 2-3 and my wife's belly didn't like it so we cut the trip short. Still managed 3 decent fish (all 18-20 lbs.). Fish are getting darker and there were definitely fewer than Saturday. We are all retired teachers and were celebrating not having to be in school. ====================

Gave the Kings a rest today......
Kevin J Legg replied to Missdemeanor's topic in Waterfowl / Bird Game
Looks like you had a great shoot. It doesn't take long when you're where those local birds want to be but what a blast. -
Still haven't got any birds but I have a good lead on a resting pond.
-
The good news is we limited on the kings going 9 for 12!

I was doing a final scout of a field I had permission to hunt only to find out there was another group that had permission to hunt it ( landowner confusion). The competition for fields has gotten to be severe and it's become increasingly difficult to find places to hunt if you don't rent or own the land. There also seem to be few locals in the field and I have no birds for the opener tomorrow. Things do seem to get a little easier in the late season when there are other things to hunt and lower bag limits.

actually 10 color was a flasher/fly. Stinger on the rigger but I've only caught a couple off spoons thus far. -
Fishing Report Your Name / Boat Name:Longlegg ============== TRIP OVERVIEW ============== Date(s):8/29 Time on Water:6:00-3:00 Weather/Temp:75 Wind Speed/Direction: Waves: 1' Surface Temp: 74 Location: LAT/LONG (GPS Cords): =============== FISHING RESULTS =============== Total Hits: 11 Total Boated:6 Species Breakdown:4Kings and 2Coho Hot Lure: flasher/fly Trolling Speed: 2-2.6 Down Speed: Boat Depth: 70-125 Lure Depth: 50-105 ==================== SUMMARY & FURTHER DETAILS Ran out to 75 fow at first light and found a good screen. Hit one on a 11' flasher within 5 minutes. Dropped one but picked up a second on a wire out 155 and the screen went blank. Trolled out to 125 fow and hit one on the wire out 225. Dropped one and then no hits for about two hours. Worked our way back in to 75 fow and saw a boat hooked up, Saw some bait and hooks on the screen and shortly thereafter we were hooked up also on a stinger set down 60 feet. Took two more quick hits but came up empty and then landed another on a wire set back 160. Worked around a bit longer and finally hit another on a 10 color leadcore and decided to call it a day. Lots of boats in the morning but not many out in the afternoon after 1:00. ====================

Oswego 8/24-26

Nice report. I'll be headed down soon. -
I recently donated a half day trip to benefit a cancer victim. We went out on the river early yesterday morning. After catching a couple walleyes we switched to smallmouths and limited out by 10:00. Nice morning on the water with Kris and Dave Haskins.

Not only that but there is no limit!

I certainly wasn't judging the high test loads and chokes, which could very well be more effective under some circumstances. However, under standard over decoy shooting the Winchester Xperts seem to work just fine for me and are half to a third the price of the high test loads. It's always a good idea to pattern loads and chokes but field experience tells you a great deal too. Scout well, set up correctly with quality decoys, and pick your shots and you could kill them with a 410 when they are feet down over the decoys. That and it's a more thrilling shoot!
