New to the lake
stoutner replied to benniboo81's topic in New York Fishing Reports - Lake Ontario (South Shore)
If you just got out of the Navy (and live on Braddocks bay) you probably have some cash saved. Go out and buy 2 dipsy rods with line counters, 2 or 3 dipsy divers, a few flashers and flies and troll a two rod setup with dipsy's. You will need that gear for next year when you get a different boat anyway. 2 rods with wire - $125 each = $250 2 dipsy's with flashers and flies = $35 each rod = $70. Might as well start buying now///once you get hooked you'll spend about 2 or 3 g's just on tackle and rods! -
Cayuga 8/7 afternoon excursion at Dean's
stoutner replied to 143447's topic in Finger Lakes Discussion
Your sacred grounds happen to be right on top of my Honey Hole out there. I guarantee I could hop on my boat and come within 200 yards or so of where you took that pic I catch a lot of rainbows in that area too (maybe a little 1/2 mile north of that photo). I always wanted to try to fish for Browns on that ledge to the right. There has to be Browns stacked up on there in the Spring time I would think. Great eating LL by the way. NICE! -
Seneca Lake boating/marine forecast info?
stoutner replied to excavr's topic in Finger Lakes Discussion
Don't think you'll find current forecast. If you worried about waves and can't find it, just look at wind forecasts. If it is an east or west wind less than 15-18 mph you will be fine especially if you fish on the side of the lake that the wind is coming from. If it is a north or south less than 10 you will be fine. Either of these winds will be less than 1 foot wave heights. Seneca usually does have some decent current and some of the guys on here should be able to tell you if it runs clockwise or counterclockwise. I cant remember. -
Steelie and Crew's Oak Trip
stoutner replied to steelie's topic in New York Fishing Reports - Lake Ontario (South Shore)
VERY NICE! -
Just hop in the boat and run south about 5 miles. I launch out of the state park all of the time and boat down to the deep water. [ Post made via Android ]

By the way. I would check the classifieds section of this forum every few days. There are always people selling their excess stuff really cheap on here. I have bought lots of stuff from guys on here and have never been disappointed. viewforum.php?f=10

I would spend at least $150 on a fish finder. 5" screen black and white is fine. Something like a Hummingbird 570 or similar.

3 lb 4 oz laker was all I could do in the 2 hours I was on the water. Caught and released a bunch of 15 - 20 inch LL Salmon.

Good job on first try.

7-20 evening i-bay
stoutner replied to MadPerry's topic in New York Fishing Reports - Lake Ontario (South Shore)
GREAT JOB! 18 LB KING ON FIRST ATTEMPT IS IMPRESSIVE! -
Copper sucks to let out and reel in. I wouldn't waste my time with it. Most of the time a diver down the center will perform just as well. The time it takes to let out and retrieve copper offsets the gain you get from using it in my opinion. You can set and retrieve two diver rods and one downrigger in the time it takes to properly let out and retrieve a 600 copper. Plus, the fish are no fun to fight on a copper rod. Save your money Hal

The Oak or Sodus
stoutner replied to Hookedup's topic in New York Fishing Reports - Lake Ontario (South Shore)
Although the Oak will most likely be better, Sodus has been very good with lots of big Kings. Just make sure to be on the water at daybreak because it really seems to slow down after about 8:30 am....especially if we have clear blue skies. -
Wow that's some GREAT news , I have not hear of ANY stocked that small !!!!!!! Stop the .. .... they were stocked 1/2" last year ..... http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/23229.html Yes...but that was Seneca Lake. Not Cayuga where I caught my 3" fish. Maybe they stocked Cayuga this year with some tiny little LL's?

Agree 100%

I have a golf tournament so i wont be able to make it but will be out in the afternoons after I'm done golfing. Good luck to everyone and make sure you have some flea flicker or really thick line because the fleas are so bad you almost can't fish with downriggers right now. If you have any rods set up with braided line you might as well leave them home!

NO derby TEEKAT
stoutner replied to Fish Junkie's topic in New York Fishing Reports - Lake Ontario (South Shore)
oooh, that would make a nice mount! -
cant buy a bite
stoutner replied to slow rollin's topic in New York Fishing Reports - Lake Ontario (South Shore)
It's not rocket science. It seems like you were doing the right thing but just didn't have much go your way. We fished the Pro-Am out of Sodus this weekend and tore it up on Saturday. Ran a very similar program on Sunday and managed to only land one King. Caught 4 Lakers and dropped 11 fish that we couldn't keep hooked up. Some times you just need some luck I guess. Keep at it...it'll get better. -
I was only able to fish for about 2 hrs sunday night. 1 laker weighed about 1 pound! ...also a 3" LL Salmon! Maybe weighed 1 ounce

Cayuga 7/1....Big thanks to Splitshot
stoutner replied to Hannah Marie's topic in Finger Lakes Discussion
Nice job Hal! I've been fishing Ontario lately but am hoping to hit Cayuga Saturday or Sunday evening for a few hours to get my league fish! Hope to see you guys out there. -
how to keep lakers alive for the derby without a livewell
stoutner replied to dremarquis's topic in Finger Lakes Discussion
I think it would be very difficult if not impossible to keep it alive for long. If you think it is a money fish head straight for the dock to get it weighed. I would run in with any Laker over 10 lbs. I dont think any thing under that will cash and even if it does it would be for very little money and not worth running to get weighed. Just my opinion though. -
7/2 & & 7/3 at the Oak w/ pics
stoutner replied to chowder's topic in New York Fishing Reports - Lake Ontario (South Shore)
Great job Andy. I had friends come up for two days fishing on Lake O and we went out of Sodus. I originally thought about going to the Oak but changed my mind. After seeing your report, I wish I did. We had fairly slow days up at Sodus. We landed enough to make it worth or while but not what I had hoped for. Of course we lost out 3 biggest fish one of them broke off my 50 lb fly leader! -

Heck of a job for team Seneca!!! It only took a (Professional) charter captain, 10 rod spread, and fishing on our lake to post some respectable numbers! You better keep that same strategy if you want to have any chance at all

Yep. Those Scotty net minders are sweet for that. They cost between $6 and $11 depending where you buy them. I need to get 1 for each diver rod and one for my net! http://www.scotty.com/fishing-gear-equi ... minder.htm
