saw a bunch today at 50 ft..Look for structure .Tomorrow Im breaking out the riggers and leadcore.I also did talk to a few guys who caught a bunch of smaller ones in shallow5 to 10 ft. A few years ago i fished the dropoffs nw of port and caught quite a few on riggers up to 60 ft. bass are around ,al we need is to adapt to their new surroundings

Some guys are using leadcore.I know of one good fisherman who always limited out with trolling leadcore in deeper water.I got a rig now and experming with it.I guess you need light flocarbon for leaders and heard small shad raps work well.I have caught many bass deeper using riggers and rubber band release on roamers.storms.deep diver plugs, different colors .One day blue andsilver ,other days perch, crawfish design. changes alot.I do know some diver teams who see quite q few,a good source of knowing where they are lakr erie I have been told the bass congregate alot around the plentiful wrecks there in summer. Hey maybe the state will start stocking a few here..
  5. didnt find any fleas at all down by pultneyville.Fished before dark, things got going late. All hits were on riggers down 70ft.52 degree water. Not many fish but they sure got active later on. Again all hits on mag diamond king with glow and ladderback spoon.I forgot my file so I lost a few good fish with them..Got to sharpen those hooks after any big fish so they dull and you lose the next hits.
  6. had good luck with 40 lb, big game last year for fleas, only problem was knots sticking in rod tip
  7. great post Nick.Your crew is greatly appreciated here with all you do. Getting reel at PO this morning. Many big kings to come yet..
  8. Some years ago I sort of gigged a nice king up 90 ft. off the bottom.I was trolling a copper sutton 38 and had a flutterfly 38 brass and silver on a cheater line.Somehow I got hung on bottom and yanked and yanked .The king hit the butterfly and the battle was on .Thirty minuetes later it was tired enough to net.If you could get those butterflys down they would do the job.I still catch many kings on 38 silver and brass. This was one of my sure luresI used evryday trolling. But then I hardly ran myself much over 2 unlesss I usd hordes,js,or diamond kings. Tomorrws ticket is hordes over diamond kings in close.Keep you posted.
  9. Hi, lately I have been getting facts and what to do to bring back the smallie on LO.Ive talked to several private hatcheries who specialize in smallmouth. My conclusion is that it can be done but it's not going to be cheap.Smallies can be raised on liver pellets much like trout. They supposedly have to taught but about half the cost using fatheads. It usally takes about 13 lbs of fatheads to raise a 1 lb smallie. There are some shortcuts and we could lower the cost signifcantly.TheNYS state hatchery crew is a very capable bunch of guys who could realy make a go of this. The goby presents problems but what are they?Does the goby eat the nest before it hatches?Does the goby eat the bass young?Lastly does the goby consume to much of the food needed by the bass fry. The biologists might have important information that could solve these riddles other questions would be how big do the young bass need to be before released to raise serviabilty. Is there anyway we could curtail the goby population .Would a electro shock kill the goby but not other species?Just a idea. My thinking would be to mass stock certain areas around the lake till be get back to a good bass population. One way maybe of getting more attention would be to form a Lake Ontario Smallmouth Restoration United.(LASRU) The quicker we get together on this the sooner the bass will be back. Maybe our excellent NYS Hatchery crew could comment on any of these ideas. Bringing back the smallie could energize the fishery and get kids fishing again and off the box Good Fishing John Anyone interested in meeting on this let me know.
  10. many years ago my sons caught a 28 lb. on a crank bait. They chased it from pultneyville almost to huningford .One son has the pic and the rod was a spinning rod with 6 lb test. Now that was a fight. At that time I stupily worked alot of saturday overtime. I missed out on special days like that.Well Im back now fishing the lake but its more like a morgue compared to its famous past.Things are more like the old days if you go west toward the OAK,Good fishing
  11. ill be back Saturday can do sunday joe
  12. well I usaly run them back on the side riggers alot more than the center rirgers. Also care I dont cross them when they go down,a very easymistake.I use to use cheaters alot.ran the cheater about 7 ft. on a snap attached to a rubber ban and contected to sliding roamer maybe 8 ft about bottom line..It works everytime just have to be tedious that everything is right.Double check everything before it goes down was my motto Wish i could get all the kings you get on dipsys nick.I use to get all i want on a small dodger and squid.with a chasing silver horde stacked above it.It was run about 1.75 at the fastest.the water i think is to clear.Ever see the youtube of the St peter of Hughes. Its as clear down there maybe more than the top now..quages realy cleared it up since the old days. I might buy a electric reel to use on copper ,ebay has quite a few but they weight alot is the only catch. Some 5 lbs.i was looking at. good fishing Nick
  13. I fished this morning .It was non stop for me mostly lakers and browns.Lost one king for sure.My old diamond king mag with glow and gree tape took most,Green and white glow prochip and blue fly took a few.The rest came on the gator spoon and assorted MS stadard. A true mx probaly didnt make much what you gave them.few boats what a shame the storm frightened everone off,but we had no thunder till about 130pm The weather app i use on my phone realy made the day Love the downrigger summer fishing ,you cant beat it nowhere. Now I neeed more helpers
  14. nice fish, tried leadcore the other night ,got alot to learn,
  15. good idea ill look into it thanks john
  16. Thanks Capt. Rich, Im also looking intoa good rod helper, who knows maybe a deep water salt water chair might not others who can't join in as well as they would like. Lots of good guys and vets would like to go if their bodies would allow them. Best' Retired Captain.John
  17. Any input on this option would be welcome.I fish with guys who can't reel for very long, myself included.parkinson will stop you Never hear of anyone talking about this option. Thanks john
  18. thank I got a solution, how about a electric reel, ive seen some on ebay pretty reasonable, one question are they legal for our fish.I do know a few guys that would need them due to disabilitys,my arm can lock up sometimes and cant reel well. One is less than a regular reel,Miya Epoch me 600 Big game Electric reel
  19. I have been watch several deer come up through my property, seems like alot of them have some tick problems. I ran accross this idea which seems cheap and very effective, maybe the DEC might look into this to reduce deer ticks and lyme disease http://www.bing.com/videos/search?q=deer+tick+treatment+salt+lick&FORM=VIRE1#view=detail&mid=510475EAD9CCD2A145D3510475EAD9CCD2A145D3
  20. well my physical limitations I have now will keep me with dipseys, you can catch more fish than one would ever need, buying a new frezzer next week, something tells me Ill need it ,lol One thing I use to was smoke salmon, took it into work all the time ,salmon with bagels and cream cheese had a nice visit today, the winter was not so bad, lots of apples left from last years bumper crop, see deer every day now
  21. Im looking for practicality of using dipseys set straigth back(zero setting )vs using copper.Any experiences doing this would be welcome thanks john
  22. https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=fRThDxlqMVg 60 plus mph and about 15 mpg make it accross the lake in a hour. Now this is a toy Id like to have
  23. Last year I went to using black dipseys.I caught fish but not many more than before with green or chrome. Also using a dipsey set at zero straight backseems to work so why bother with copper. I heard late last year that guys were having good luck on glow dipseys Anyone experienced using dipseys with outriggers?.Any imput welcome.I now have set up my boat to run two dipseys on each side conditions permiting.
  24. nice report.Loks like it's salmon time again.
