I gotta hand it to the Honeoye walleye crew, they are as tight lipped as they come! I was out today for bass and goodness just trying to run to the north end was like dodging a land mine fleet. Planer boards, rod trees, looked like A Lake Ontario tourney out there. For as little as it’s talked about (I’m sure for good reason) sure seems like a sought after fishery. Anyway back to the important stuff, laid the smack down on the bass and the jerkbait bite was on fire!

Well, this weekend was pretty amazing. Between a million bass boats being out, and a ton of pressure, bites on Sat were hard to come by. I sat tight to where I knew there were fish and kept grinding. Nothing happening on jerkbait or chatterbait, not happening on the ned rig. Alright kitech, batter up. 10 casts into a slow roll along the bottom and just a tiny “thunk”, and up to the surface comes the biggest bass I have ever hooked! Alright don’t panic, alright she is in the trolling motor PANIC. Ok she unwrapped and in the net and HOLY DEAR LORD THATS A HUGE BASS. 6lbs 8 ounces on the scale and measured at a 22 inch length. My personal best by at least .75 of a pound. Man, I’m going to be smiling about this fish for a long time. Now it’s time to get after a 7!

Much obliged sir.

Is it open? Wanna get some green carp in the AM.

It wouldn’t be a box of casting spoons, spinners and rapalas would it? With a green foam insert? If so, that would be me.

What baits are preferred for the open water perch? Obviously minnows are king but bait is hard to come by these days with the obvious social situation. I have tons of spikes left from trout fishing, would those work? Worms? Any artificials that are worth trying (gulp)? I typically run a double dropper rig for my open water efforts. Thanks!

Don't misunderstand, I did not say it was viable to have a natural self sustaining population. Very simply, I would rather the atlantics replace the chinooks in the current stocking effort. Pump that many atlantics into the lake, and everyone would start catching them. But alas, they do not consume the alewives at a rate that is satisfactory to everyone. Then again, if you also told me that stripers would be replacing kings, I would be all for that too. Once you cast to breaking bass in the surf, all other fishing just kinda seems more bland.

I think Atlantics are the pinnacle of the salmon/trout world. If someone told me that they would drop Chinooks tomorrow and focus exclusively on trout and Atlantics, I would be beyond thrilled. I am sure if the gear was downsized, they would be a great lake fight. I am aware that my opinion on this matter would not be shared by a single charter captain or industry member, so at least I am self aware. Would just be cool to see our rivers filled with fish that don't die when they come in and were native once upon a time.....

I want to say that a medical emergency played a role in this and drowning ultimately was the cause. Even at a young age, you can pass out, have a seizure (my brother suffers from epilepsy and is otherwise perfectly functional) or have a heart attack. I grew up around that creek and have fished small tribs for years, would just seem to be almost impossible to be done in strictly by drowning as an able bodied adult. In any case, it is a sad an awful story, my heart goes out to that family. I lost a buddy to the Genny a few years back. He was a worship leader at a small church and was exploring the river with friends on a rainy day. I believe they were next to the falls (below it) trying to tiptoe around a ledge. He went in, came back up and waived that all was well, then he went back down never to come up. They found his body much further down river. He left his wife a several small children behind. That's why I like fishing with at least one other guy and trying not to tempt fate, no risky crossings or precipices for me.

Just my two cents, I would approach a situation with another armed human in a calm and non aggressive manner. I was once accused of trespassing in Keuka by a regular hunter of the land. I had permission to hunt the property but the other regular didn’t bother to ask first. He threatened to “kill me” or hurt me so bad that I couldn’t “trespass anymore”. Thank god it was bow season. He was yelling and screaming for a good 10 minutes. I waited and said I would only come down if he could actually have a conversation (Was in a climber). I got down out of my tree and calmly explained who I was and why I was ok to be there. I then explained that he told another human being that he was going to kill them and quoted his words back to him. He seemed to get the message as he backed way off and we ended the conversation speaking on friendly terms. Point is that even though these trespassers stink, you are better off just keeping a lid on the temper. Especially when weapons are present. Get the law involved, let them work and don’t let anger get the better of you. What I went through was nuts, and I wasn’t doing anything wrong. Starting from a place of rational conversation would have been much better for both him and I. People are crazy and it would be dumb for something to escalate Needlessly. Do unto others........
