So I have always hunted the Brockportish area of Monroe County, and I have always hunted properties with multiple wild apple trees. After having sat and observed these spots for years I have come to wonder if they are really a big draw at all for our deer. It always seems like there are tons of untouched fallen apples and the pics of deer feeding on apples are few and far between. I’ve come to think it’s one of those “land of plenty” scenarios. We are surrounded by tons of agriculture in our area, so maybe the deer don’t really need or care for wild apples? Especially when there are thousands of acres of soy, corn and commercial apples everywhere? Seems like they are all about the unique experiences. If there is tons of one thing near you, they would rather have the fun new thing (clover, alfalfa, brassicas). What’s your experience?

Dumbest Thing You Have Done To PlaceThat Perfect Stand
idn713 replied to idn713's topic in Big / Small Game
I’m gonna clean the stand and wash my stuff after every sit. I’m not very allergic so it’s not the biggest deal to me. Now, am I scratching everywhere? Yes. But will I have that level of contact next time, no, nowhere near it. I mean, it’s THE tree. I gotta be there -
I have this beautiful secluded field corner, surrounded by oak trees and even has a two producing apple trees on the edge. It is a perfect transition zone out of heavy cover and before hardwoods. Most of the field is CRP and just one little 1/8 acre corner is mowed down for that perfect dusk shot. So how do I get a stand up? Ah! There is the perfect oak! About half way up into setting the sticks, I notice the tree is wrapped in posion ivy. It's ok, I have gloves and pants and long sleeves, I will be fine. I get the stand set and my god, it is perfect. I am going to shoot a giant here. Welp, 6 days later and I am head to toe poison ivy rash. It's like I could use a skin transplant right now. I look like two face from batman. I can't believe I thought that was a good idea. I have invested stock in calamine lotion. But if I kill that giant, this will all be worth it........ Maybe. Ever done anything like this?

Good stuff guys! I was mainly thinking about it in terms of bass. Holding over a deep dropshot spot ain’t easy and spotlock would greatly help!

I am thinking of upgrading my head unit on the Terrova to the I pilot version. I am looking for opinions on how functional it is and how much you ACTUALLY use it. I am ready to drop the 450 on it, but I want to know it’s worth it.

Been at this a while but I had a tough go of it this weekend with only a few mature Kings to show for it. Wires were dead silent and the riggers took all the fish. With that said, I know I could have done better. (Lake flip had some effect). So so as a general rule, what is your preferred down speed and distance from the ball? Just wanna make sure my basics are covered. I like 40 from the ball for the low rod and about 2.3-2.4. Here is a pic with my buddy after fighting his first ever mature king!

Sold / Closed Kingpin Sovereign and Raven RV9 $550

Up for sale is my mint Kingpin Sovereign and all it’s original packaging and paperwork. It is in amazing shape for how much I fished it and has barely any signs of being used. Spins mint. It is paired with a custom wrapped RV9 rod that has upgraded guides. This is truly an amazing combo to help you get on the salmon and steelhead this fall!! -
My father recently acquired some land outside of Brockport, and we are back into the swing of private land hunting. After 4 years of scratching, clawing and begging to hunt "marginal" deer properties, it sure is nice to be back in my own spot with this guy poking around. As an aside, all of the neighbors have been acting like total crazy people. Walking, riding all over the land and treating us like we killed somebody just because we are posting the property and not allowing all the ride through nonsense to happen. Amazing what people have to say when they are the one spending the money or paying the taxes.......

I was just on Sodus, got a couple nice bites on the dropshot but the fish are deep in the weeds. I might try a crankbait and rip it through the weeds next time I go back. Try to get some reaction bites.

Quick Question for the more seasoned bass guys out there. What do you do to find fish in the deep summer? It seems like I CANNOT find a deep weed edge in our lakes (think Sodus or Conesus). All I find when I look for the deep edge is grass that comes up to about 5 ft down in 12 ft of water. This is where I see most guys flipping or dropshotting. The real deep break is around 17 ft and it just desolate beyond that break. Seems like I never catch anything when I fish that hard break. So here I am stuck. It seems like most guys are just flipping to seemingly endless stretches of weeds with no real holes, breaks or edges. Do they just do that long enough to run into a couple of fish? It's been all I can do to grind out a 4-5 fish day lately. Granted the bites are big, but its not worth the drive or the gas for 4 bass. So what do you look for in the dog days of summer? Do you just poke around in productive foot of water and flip randomly? Or do you look for something more defined. Thank you in advance for any tidbits you might offer. And yes I have advanced electronics and have been bass fishing my whole life. Just seems like late July - August in these weedbowl lakes of ours defeats me.

Trout don’t nibble, they inhale. If you feel something, stick em. I wish Lake Ontario lakers would hit on the retrieve but those fish are so well fed you just gotta bounce it in front of them and then smack em when they hit.

Hey DJH any chance you could PM me with the setup for still fishing for Browns and rainbows?? I am so curious about that method of fishing for finger lakes trout and I will be on Seneca in two weeks. I would love to give in a shot there!

Muskies in central basin of Lake Ontario
idn713 replied to BP Swing's topic in Musky, Tiger Musky & Pike (ESOX)
Had a huge mark out over 400’ (out of sandy) come up and trip the bottom rigger and stacker within 7 seconds of each other. Both lines had been cut clean several inches inches in front of the spoon. My buddy and I just stared at each other, had zero idea what fish could have done that. In looking back, we both think it was a suspended musky, but that’s total speculation. -
Thinking about making a trip to the bar to drift the shoals in front of the fort for smallies. Is it worth the trip? Or should I just hit Erie? Trying to maximize the fishing for the hour long drive, but if there is a decent amount of fish on the bar, I would like to give in a try.

This is why I ask! Looks like it just probably isn’t feasible on the big pong. Looks like I will stick to jigging out there, now that works pretty dang well on those big Ontario greasers!

So anyone ever drift for trout (like over 100 FOW)? I was thinking, bring four steelhead noodle rods, 10lb main lines, 1-2 oz egg sinker, swivel, three ft Fluro leader, and common shiner (sawbellies sound like a nightmare to get and keep). Drop the rigs to staggered depths, slap em in a rod holder and let the wind take it over while you crack a beer and rod watch. Anyone ever do this? I was thinking about bringing it to Lake O and seeing if I can’t get a king to take a crack at it.

I live in Chili and I fish all the surrounding lakes it seems besides I bay. I am getting real tired of what seems like a 50 minute drive everywhere and wanna focus on that body of water 20 min from me. I dont want specific spots but can anyone provide insights on the general largemouth pattern on I bay? I know that with the bait in there and being connected to Lake O it has to have a couple of big fish swimming off those ledges.

Is it just me or are there wayyy more spring Kings around the south shore than in years prior? I follow many social media accounts that are just hammering Kings (almost as much as browns) all up and down the south shore of Lake Ontario. Good sign if you ask me.
