A few years back a dog died in Honeoye for the blue/green algae and that same year my son and I were about to launch at the south end with my (white fiberglass) boat and I always take a preliminary look from the dock before launching anywhere and there was a huge pool of pea green stuff covering that end of the lake and it look just like someone spilled a few thousand gallons of oil based paint on the water. needless to say I didn't launch there.

Last weekend there was a significant NW wind and the lake was rough. I would imagine this may have broken up any pooling of algae as you move south on the lake dispersing it within the lake and thereby diluting it.

Lake Michigan Giant kings this year!!!

I don't think that suggestion will receive much attention by the DEC as the Pacific salmon fishery has very severe problems in many places largely because of the fact that the salmon fish farming has placed their holding areas within the traditional spawning streams of the native salmon and they have become contaminated and infected with a variety of viruses and fungi and the numbers returning to streams are down significantly from historical levels. -
Some good info right there. That area mentioned on the east side near (Wells College in Aurora north and nearly across from Dean's Cove on the west side) usually has a lot of rainbows hanging around there but you need to be careful with riggers and wire setups etc. because it can be like banging up against a wall in terms of the bottom structure of the shelf in front of there.

Good points Vince. You know I think a lot of times we seem to take this Lake Ontario fishery for granted as well as the Finger Lakes for that matter. The truth is that we live in a very special area with unparalleled diversity of fishing offering something for all and the ability to do all kinds of fishing boat or no boat. I guess it may be human nature for folks to look for the greener grass on the other side of the fence, but it is critically important to fully appreciate what we have and to look for ways to improve things without pizzing off Mother Nature. Although folks may always be shooting for that 40 or 50 pound behemoth as their potential trophy when out there a trophy is pretty much " in the eye of the beholder". To be chasing that dream is what it is truly about for many, but the reality is that these Chinooks and the other salmon and trout for that matter regardless of size or weight are a hell of a lot of fun to catch, and it borders on ":addiction" once it is experienced. We don't ever want to lose sight of how much pleasure is derived from the experience of fishing for these brutes right here on our doorstep. Many people in the world would give anything to be able to do this. -

Help with my spread
Sk8man replied to SmellsLikeFishNH's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
Although you may get some specific suggestions from folks I would suggest that since you have the equipment to do business with that regardless of what might be successful today that tomorrow or a week from now it may (and probably will) be different. You have an X4D and a variety of things to try. The water temps have been all over the place with these strong changing winds of late and different locations on the lake can have quite different conditions and temp profiles so take some readings as soon as you get out there in relatively shallow and move out a bit and check there as well and decide based on that information where to start out and what to use. Closer to the time of the outing ask specifically on here if anyone has been out there and take that info into account before you go. Recommendations regarding specific setups can vary all over the place especially at this time of the season and different locations on the lake....trust your own intuition and knowledge above all and experiment. -

30 for 30 on kings also seems a bit questionable. The length can be a factor but the girth and thickness of the back is usually the deciding factor and is difficult to tell from pic. Holding up over 40 lbs with a couple fingers seems a bit questionable as well and if for any length of time could be considered a torture technique

I don't think anyone has them totally pegged right now I think I'd be running a bit faster at about 2.5 and up with lines out of the turbulence. They weren't cooperative last weekend for us (only lakers even up high and one dink salmon) but we marked a lot of fish (and some bait pods) that could have been some of them as well as rainbows in the 40-60 ft range over 100-350 ft of water. Lakers are all over the place so you pretty much can't avoid them either even way of temp. Our downriggers were quiet all day even with long leads but that can vary day to day like everything else. Need to cover a lot of territory and experiment the whole time and hopefully something will let you dial in on them. We had a ferocious hit that got off after a pretty good run that looked like it may have been a decent salmon that came on a wire rig at 175 ft wire out with a green flasher and white fly. sure didn't seem like any laker. Good luck with it.

I found the report very interesting but still wonder about the issue of bait dispersal and distribution both throughout the lake and within the water column as far as estimates of the numbers, and whether there are differences in the locations of the bait according to size/age for instance. I'm not sure of the exact depths of the trawls but since the alewives are schooling fish and may be schooling up by size is it possible that they are inhabiting different depths and may be missed by the sampling methods using standard depths? For example, I have seen numerous instances of bait hugging bottom in very deep water while discrete pods of bait are being observed suspended at various depths within the water column (e.g. up much higher). If the trawls throughout the lake are using standard depths couldn't they be missing significant amounts (and perhaps year classes) of bait perhaps say "hugging" bottom that may be younger or older than the ones being caught in the trawls at a given time of the season?

Cayuga 3rd annual Tom Margeit memorial Derby

I don't know if pics taken of the boxes but the winning box was I believe 36 lbs with second close behind at 35 and 14 oz. I think. Some nice fish caught despite the rough water conditions with the shifting wind. I think the lunker was 11lbs 2 oz. laker. A nicely colored up 10 lb Brown was also caught ( I hope these figures are correct I was eating chicken BarBQ dinner while listening) The tournament was very well run. Congrats to all those taking part in putting it together. Nice raffle prizes too ( I even won a bag of micro Gambler rigs.... thanks for donating them Brian). It was a good turn out of boats and no hassles launching at Dean's despite previous fears of a bass tournament. We saw a bass boat on trailer heading for the north end when we were on the road at Canoga about 4 AM heading towards Dean's and fisherdude called on the phone indicating that he was the only one at the launch so I assume the bass guys went to the north end to launch given the NW wind forecast. Mark and I boated 15 lakers that were between 5 and 8 lbs and one small sub-legal landlock. We had a massive hit that bent the Seth Green rod to the water and folded up and mangled a large Evil Eye like a pretzel. A number of hit and runs with nobody home too. All and all a fun day despite the long run back to Dean's from way south of Sheldrake against some pretty bumpy water. A fun day and highly recommended to all for next year....well worth the journey there and met up with some great folks some of whom are LOU members. When we left the Sportsman's Club we stopped to get something to drink out of the cooler and one of the LOU guys stopped his truck and asked if there was anything he could do as he thought we had a vehicle problem.....just one more example of the goodness and generosity of the LOU community -
