  1. I hope the guy was honest and they aren't mapping for a gas or oil pipeline nearby.
  2. Yep I have one just like it and it is good for the big salmon.
  3. Isn't that an extendable handle?
  4. I found the report very interesting but still wonder about the issue of bait dispersal and distribution both throughout the lake and within the water column as far as estimates of the numbers, and whether there are differences in the locations of the bait according to size/age for instance. I'm not sure of the exact depths of the trawls but since the alewives are schooling fish and may be schooling up by size is it possible that they are inhabiting different depths and may be missed by the sampling methods using standard depths? For example, I have seen numerous instances of bait hugging bottom in very deep water while discrete pods of bait are being observed suspended at various depths within the water column (e.g. up much higher). If the trawls throughout the lake are using standard depths couldn't they be missing significant amounts (and perhaps year classes) of bait perhaps say "hugging" bottom that may be younger or older than the ones being caught in the trawls at a given time of the season?
  5. Yep. one day I counted 16 of them munching stuff in my backyard. Just a few minutes ago I noticed a 4 point buck out there
  6. I don't know if pics taken of the boxes but the winning box was I believe 36 lbs with second close behind at 35 and 14 oz. I think. Some nice fish caught despite the rough water conditions with the shifting wind. I think the lunker was 11lbs 2 oz. laker. A nicely colored up 10 lb Brown was also caught ( I hope these figures are correct I was eating chicken BarBQ dinner while listening) The tournament was very well run. Congrats to all those taking part in putting it together. Nice raffle prizes too ( I even won a bag of micro Gambler rigs.... thanks for donating them Brian). It was a good turn out of boats and no hassles launching at Dean's despite previous fears of a bass tournament. We saw a bass boat on trailer heading for the north end when we were on the road at Canoga about 4 AM heading towards Dean's and fisherdude called on the phone indicating that he was the only one at the launch so I assume the bass guys went to the north end to launch given the NW wind forecast. Mark and I boated 15 lakers that were between 5 and 8 lbs and one small sub-legal landlock. We had a massive hit that bent the Seth Green rod to the water and folded up and mangled a large Evil Eye like a pretzel. A number of hit and runs with nobody home too. All and all a fun day despite the long run back to Dean's from way south of Sheldrake against some pretty bumpy water. A fun day and highly recommended to all for next year....well worth the journey there and met up with some great folks some of whom are LOU members. When we left the Sportsman's Club we stopped to get something to drink out of the cooler and one of the LOU guys stopped his truck and asked if there was anything he could do as he thought we had a vehicle problem.....just one more example of the goodness and generosity of the LOU community

    Canandaigua Fleas

Fished Cayuga yesterday and they weren't bad.....just a few.and easily removed
  8. Although they are very cute be aware they often carry ticks which can locate in the weeds or grass and if your kids play near there or go barefoot etc. there could be a problem......my next door neighbor recently had to put their dog down because of severe Lyme disease contracted from their yard out back.
  9. Mustad also make braided fishing line that isn't bad and relatively inexpensive (comes in 200 yd. spool vs. 150 yd for Power Pro)
  10. Too bad too because they totally take over Dean's Cove
  11. Gotcha. Yeah the crud is hard to overcome. Fran B. is a great guy (and Deb nice lady too) by the way known him for over 40 years. He knows as much as anyone on the planet about Merc motors and probably has about every part someplace in his shop
  12. Not sure why the suction cup didn't take. May be wax on the exterior? . You do have to wet the inside part of the suction cup and sometimes have to kind of slide it up or down ti create suction. A long time ago when I used the method I used two suction cups by the way.and it created enough suction that it took a bit of pulling to get it back off Having transducers permanently mounted is the way to go anyway. Good luck out there
  13. That is my take on it too Mike even after more than 50 years of boating.
  14. It is more critical regarding the khz difference than the spacing apart. The one that is now to the outermost of the hull will probably have problems marking when on plane. As long as the transducers have frequency separation there shouldn't be a problem even if they are side by side. I use the same bracket screw (the transducers are side by side) for my Fishhawk (70khz) and Lowrance set to 200 khz without problem. When the transducer is set way to the outside they experience turbulence more readily. You shouldn't have any trouble as long as one unit is run on 200 khz and the other is either 50 or 83 just don't run both at 200 khz.and if it were me I'd move the outside one next to the other closer to the inside to mark better.
  15. Thats the spirit ....Hope to see ya there and best of luck.
  16. The issue of weigh-in location is a common one. For many of us that live to the west of Cayuga (e.g. Canandaigua) the weigh -in at Myers is VERY inconvenient since the nearest decent launch is Dean's Cove. For smaller derbies or tournaments concessions become necessary because having multiple weigh-in stations is both a little more complicated than may meet the eye (e.g having certified scales in some cases, having the personnel to man them etc.). I guess what it boils down to is that if we want to support a cause badly enough we do whatever is necessary to do it even if it means driving a ways and making the most of the day. I know we are driving the 40 miles or so to fish it ( meaning that getting up early) and hope that others will view it similarly and fish it too. Sometimes there are good reasons for being 'inconvenienced" and we need to go with the flow.
  17. https://chinookdiver.com/depth-chart Might want to read the info on the website and make a determination specific to where you'll be fishing and what your target species may be.
  18. Aw thanks Sammy Hey nice boat you have there I was next to you coming in the channel at Sodus last Friday. I didn't even have to put on glasses to read the name
  19. Looks pretty good Rick. Thanks for the "heads up"
  20. Good advice given and applies to both lakes. The spoons you mentioned and ones like them will be fine too.Sometimes the silvers want them back 30-60 feet or so and a fairly fast troll 2.5-3.0 The lakers on Cayuga will hit just about anything spoon or fly if in the mood to actively feed. I think your normal Lake Champlain tactics will produce and be fine. Cayuga may be the more successfully fished lake at this point in time as the trout and salmon predators are down in Seneca and the bait population is high so probabilities connected with catching decline usually in that situation. Good luck.
  21. X2 Using 40 or 50 lb Big Game (hard surface coating,,resists abrasion) mono instead of Fluoro for years no break offs. Each of these materials has its uses sometimes you don't want or need stretch or else may need or desire "stealth" (supposedly less visible than mono underwater) up high or in really clear water. Each excels in different applications, i also tie my own flies with 50 lb. Big game again no break-offs and they run deep so no need for stealth and you want a slight bit of stretch because of the wire main line..
  22. Wondering if it is some smell from the plastic? (some plastics use urea in them) or maybe the sound when it takes a pic? Interesting situation....that they select only those....
  23. Not sure of your exact boat setup and limitations etc. but you may be able to have better luck with 10 lb balls if you can get rid of the stand pipes on the mounts and mount the downriggers closer to the surface of the transom or gunwale with support underneathas the higher you go the more the torque is exerted and not distributed putting pressure on those surfaces.
  24. Pretty bumpy out there today Mike speed control a big problem. One real nice one on for a bit then spit the hook, and a few small kings and that was it quit about noon. Fish marks 40-60 ft above whatever. Ones that hit only riggers no fly action. Riggers set to 55 ft temp 50-52 there
