  1. I can run 4 if I want to and Whaler hardware as you know is top notch so the recessed built in holders are very sturdy. I do have swivel bases on the Cannons and that is real convenient
  2. Bill I have been using the gimbals set up that way for 16 years and never a problem and I have the extendable booms etc.. They are really the way to go ....easy removal if you want to safe guard riggers or just go cruising without them.
  3. I think it is good advice no matter where you go Brian. There is some weird funky ice in places everyplace I have been lately.
  4. It was lucky but I was fishing for them and perch. 14 ft small tungsten jig with spikes
  5. Yesterday when my son and I were were walking out on the ice at Conesus I stared at a spot on the ice in disbelief. It was littered with dead shiners, dead gills, a pile of charcoal briquettes, a garbage bag with trash, an empty propane tank, and an empty full sized brandy bottle all embedded in the ice. It was the most disgusting example of why some people spoil things for the rest of us whether hunting or fishing. Unfortunately, trying to retrieve the stuff was impossible as it had frozen right into the ice. Several other fishermen I spoke with had seen it and were enraged....really sad. When we came back in I noticed that someone had been able to free and collect the garbage bag and propane cylinder at least.
  6. Thanks Mike. It came from Conesus Good luck longspurs.
  7. Thankfully I forgot most of it by the time we got there today Thanks for the help at the edge of the hole
  8. Rob gave you great advice based on good data
  9. Slow day but had some luck 5 pounder.
  10. 250 or 300 good choice in my opinion as you can add weights to get them deeper if needed and can get them in fairly quick (about like a ten color leadcore) to save on arms and fishes life.
  11. Good to see some decent perch from there instead of the dinks
  12. Underwater light meters - https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_nkw=underwater+light+meters For the oxygen levels underwater you'll probably be stuck with very expensive attachments to specialized scientific equipment

    Giant Calico

Definitely one for the wall....beautiful fish.
  14. Great to know Jason. High quality spoons that work great whether on Lake O or the Finger Lakes. Good to see things ramping up.
  15. Jim you have a PM
  16. Matt - Brian is the one you want to learn the laker stuff from....he has it down to a science and It is fun to make your own stuff though I've been doing it for years including the peanuts since 1978 or so but I also have a bunch of the Gambler Rigs etc. as they are totally proven on the Fingers as well as Lake O. and when my own stuff isn't doing it I put them on multiple setups and BOOM! Quality product from a quality guy. I know you fish Seneca and since the fishing there has gotten tougher lately the Gambler Rigs and the peanuts are the way to go for Lake Trout and some larger Browns as well.
  17. Hey Keith I heard that KFC was really your first love and they have stuff on sale now at 2 for $3
  18. The weight differential is not necessarily really a major issue for the 9.9 vs. 15 HP but it does depend on whether you select options on one and not the other. For example trim and tilt and things of that sort. On some of the older 2 stroke motors the difference was non-existent and in fact as it was only the carburator setup that was different and they were virtually the same motor (e.g. 9.9 vs. 15 HP Johnson). On these newer 4 strokes if it is just the basic motor comparison they are usually about 15 lbs or so and again it depends on manufacturer to a degree too. As long as you have an appropriate substantial mounting bracket the weight differential shouldn't be much of a factor on that size boat.
  19. Or....craft places like Michaels or Joanns Fabrics has them in the craft section faceted plastic beads of different sizes, colors and shapes as well as light weight metal ones. Keep things simple Matt as you want the action of the peanut to wobble back and forth without being impeded by anything else and that is the most critical thing with them.
  20. Just make sure it is a 4 stroke regardless as they seem to have more torque than the 2 strokes (I have had both), use less gas, and you don't have to mix the oil and gas. I found that with my boat I could even get away from my steering connector because of the torque difference.
  21. Key words "for walleye"
  22. Your main problem is different than what I worry about with my X4D probe. I am a little skeptical of the plastic clip that secures it to the downrigger wire. I rigged up something that I hope will prevent actual descent to the bottom of the probe. I rigged a second wire cable and clip so that both the downrigger clip and and the secondary one are attached to the probe itself and I attach the secondary one to the Blacks release which is crimped in place. It hasn't been tested (yet) but I hope that in a failure on the main wire the connection to the Black release will hold on to the probe even if the weight is gone Note the old school main connection which has been there for 30 years or so P.S. I've always taken the weight off .the downriggers and never have traveled with the weight on them.
  23. If it were me I'd be going with a 15 HP 4 stroke. A 9.9 is going to working harder to push the boat and if you have to get off in a hurry the 15 will do a quicker job of it.
