Thanks Wally. Very interesting that all these years I have believed that there were two known deepest spots out there; one on a diagonal from Marlena Point and the other on a diagonal from the State Park. When looked at in the Navionics viewer there are 4 such spots on the Branchport arm alone and another three on the PY to Hammondsport arm. They must be "estimated" to some degree though because all 7 of them are listed at 175 ft. I have marked the two traditional deepest spots on all my depth finders over many years at 180 ft. and that is what most existing maps say. Although it could represent measurement error of my depth finders it seems unusual that all 7 spots are listed as 175 ft. Perhaps they have rounded off to the nearest contour line. Nice to see that they have improved the contour mapping of Keuka...thanks for sharing. I know it is technically bathymetry but it was easier to type contour

It isn't only the length and width of the boat that matters...the hull design is crucial (e..g. deep V vs. tri-hull etc.) and the experience of the operator with that particular boat who is fully aware of the strengths and weaknesses of the boat, and experienced with the conditions of Lake O. Sometimes even when picking a promising day weather changes can and do occur very frequently and rapidly out there. It is absolutely necessary to coinsult multiple weather stations (e.g. NOAA, Weatherunderground, Weather.com, and the weather stations on your VHF radio) . If you check the buoy information on the Internet you can usually double the reported value and be close to the existing conditions. The Great Lakes are exactly that....great...but always maintain a healthy respect for them regardless of the current weather because Mother Nature is very fickle and unforgiving of boaters mistakes. Carefully pick your days and weather conditions just as the guys above said but also pay close attention to your intuition and don't ever "over-ride " it and take chances.

FYI apparently Emperor Cuomo is at it again...

You know...when I posted this originally I was still pretty pissed because I had recently seen Cuomo on TV as arrogant as ever and giving a sermon to the "peons". In retrospect I probably should have held off and recognized the politically charged emotions that go along with nearly any of the current issues state-wide or nationally. One of the great things about forums, and this one is particular is that many voices can be heard with a wide variety of opinions; most of which are ones from which we can learn or re-formulate our thinking. Maintaining respect for differing views is an important consideration and should guide our comments as well as our thinking. -
The pic at the left of your post sure looks like a salmon although no way of telling where caught or by whom Both lake Erie and Lake Ontario truly are great fisheries depending on the species sought after and area you fish. You may want to connect up with someone on here in the specific area you fish on those lakes. Most folks are receptive to PM's with some specifics whereas they may be reluctant to post them pubiically for many reasons (and most of them good ones). Another route is to get a couple like minded guys together and go on a charter specifically for the species and body of water and ask beforehand if they will be receptive to treating it as a "training' session. There are some great knowledgeable charter guys on this site as well as many highly experienced sports fisherpersons and if approached respectfully through PM's they may offer some valuable insights when enough detail is included in your questions. Keep at it, don't give up, experiment, and pay close attention to detail. best general advice I can offer without details

It is always tempting to interpret any marks on the screen in terms of trout and salmon and we sometimes forget that a lot of other species inhabit the water and especially in shallower water such as shown on the finder. I have seen huge migrations of carp traveling across lakes from one side to the other, as well as large groups of suckers in shallower water. I'm sure that at least some of the time given the wide array of fish on Lake Ontario and the Niagara despite the large size of the marks they could be many other species as well as salmon too. This thought is always in the back of my mind while trolling where I keep making passes through marks on the screen and can't get them to hit while shallow. There are also sturgeon of various sizes in the Niagara -
bulletbob - I have to say that after 60 years of fishing the Finger Lakes from a boat I strongly disagree with the thesis that Cayuga or Seneca, or in some cases even the smaller Finger Lakes aren't much of a safety concern. The fact that the waves may not get as steep as those on the ocean, or even Lake Ontario for that matter can be very deceptive because the wave intervals are not rolling like those in the ocean or Great Lakes and they can come over the bow, stern, or gunwales of many boats. A lot of the people reading this thread may be from distant points geographically, and could easily think from reading the comments that there is nothing to fear in these lakes; and nothing would be further from the truth. It is easy to be lulled into thinking during somewhat "normal" conditions that these waters are relatively tame, but just once have the wind come up to 45 mph or more while out there, and have your main engine die, and the kicker not be able to go against the wind to get you to safety; and your opinion could quickly change. I had that happen on Seneca during a derby in 2013 in my "ocean capable" 18 1/2 ft. Boston Whaler and my 40 lbs of anchor wouldn't even hold in shallow water and the boat was headed for Watkins Glen (from nearly mid-way in the lake). Luckily, my good buddy was able to tow me about 14 miles back to the launch. I have also lost firends to Seneca one of whom was a charter captain. The Finger Lakes are no joke. Mother Nature is VERY fickle, and nobody should believe that they shouldn't be concerned about safety out there especially when unanticipated things happen. You can never be "over-prepared" out there, or take things for granted....it could cost you your life. I treat the Fingers the same as Lake Ontario or the ocean and have a great respect for each.

Directly tie the main line braid to one swivel endf the top of the "T", tie a fluoro leader on the other opposite end from the braid connection with a swivel snap as a terminus. Usually a "dropper" line is connected to the bottom swivel connection mono or fluro and lighter lb test than the other two lines so if hang up lose just the sinker.

I've had their units since the seventies too, but it isn't the same company any longer and I suspect that your support experience might be quite a bit different these days.

Sk8man replied to Sk8man's topic in LOUnited For Change
Originally, my buddy who is an avid hunter and gun collector sent the article to me in an email addressed only to me - not a spam mail. I didn't investigate it further like I do most of the things sent to me; mainly because I had recently seen an interview with king Andrew on TV. In the interview he made a number of statements that referred to the SAFE Act being just the start of his actions toward gun control; which he spoke very aggressively about and promised to implement once re-elected. Regardless of the age or point by point accuracy of the article his intentions are VERY clear; and hopefully we won't be caught "asleep at the switch" before the train wreck. I am very aware of the tactic of creating fear and paranoia surrounding emotional issues. Paranoia is an unreasonable, unwarranted fear without a valid basis. After listening to King Andrew this issue does not fit that criteria. I guess I would encourage folks to carefully check into Cuomo's agenda items prior to voting because we need someone truly representing the best interests of ALL of the state's citizens with tolerance for opposing views, and data driven decision making. -

Another 20% CUT in Chinook Stocking for 2019
Sk8man replied to Tall Tails's topic in Open Lake Discussion
Regardless of the particular position one takes on the many issues connected with the current, past or future stocking efforts it is really great that those opinions can be given life on here. In the past we didn't have a good forum for discussing things as a group of concerned people. I also believe that if we step back away from the individual points of view and issues surrounding short term considerations that the fishery is a very special one.The people at the DEC have been doing something right over the years as we have an incredible fishery overall, and this year was a good indicator of that fact. Things can always be improved but we shouldn't lose sight of what we already have either. -

During the recent primary he stated on TV that the SAFE Act was only a start on gun control and that he intends to increase his efforts so nothing has changed in that regard. By the way I don't 'hang out" there... the article was sent by a friend. I figured it is something folks on here who own guns should know about BEFORE the next election. Not that it will make a difference as three of the downstate counties will determine the results again just like last time
