  1. A couple things: first - the wire breaking suggests that either you had an undetected kink or bad connection depending on where the break occurred, or the drag was set too tight and the sudden stress from the run on a weak spot broke it, OR the "sticky' drag possibility. You may want to closely examine that particular reels drag and/or replace the drag washers. Normally the drag setting should be slightly tight enough to prevent line from going out but if too loose and a fish hits and the drag plays out freely it can create loose slack or an incomplete hook-up from lack of enough resistance to fully set the hook creating a "hit and run" situation with no fish.
  2. They call Cohos "silvers" for a reason....they are pretty silverish. There are no sparce large dark spottings on the gill plate or "X" or "comma" shaped spots on the body on that fish on the left which an Atlantic should have. It isn't real clear from the pic, but the area around the mouth looks greyish. If with the greying on edges whitish inside mouth (base of gums) and not black except tongue- Coho. Can't see the adipose or tail spotting clearly enough in the pic to tell anything, nor can the rays in the anal fin be counted. If the area around and in the mouth itself is actually black including the tongue it would be a king rather than the other two choices. Be aware also that there have been suspicions from time to time that there may be crossovers between the Chinooks and Cohos. Coho tail spotting is usually confined to the upper half of the tail. Usually the tail of the Coho is more squared off than forked but as said above it can depend on the way it is being held too, and same can be said of the anal fin which looks longer but could be distorted by the hand. My guess is immature king (which can still be quite silver) but without actually seeing the inside of the mouth and the tail spotting etc. the pic is a bit ambiguous.
  3. Better off getting a new spool or making a shorter copper The guy's suggestions below are right, but the reason I said what I did is that any connection point with wire and especially copper can be a potential weak link in the setup and when the wire is stressed sufficiently- that is the point it will usually part or break and in that case you don't save money etc. Most of the time you don't expect hang up on bottom with the coppers but if you do chances are whatever you are running will be gone and the likely place it leaves from is where the connection was made.
  4. Justin makes a good point....(as usual) Kings do put A lot of instantaneous pressure on that particular part of the set-up along with the fly leader (50 lb Big Game on my own hand tied flies instead of fluoro).
  5. I've been a Lowrance guy since the dinosaurs walked the Earth but I also say FURUNO
  6. A main reason I use the 40 mono rather than fluoro for this particular thing is that the mono has a little stretch which is desirable here when using wire which has none. I used to use fluoro but found that it is less forgiving, and brittle - especially in cold weather .I've never had one of these setups break but I have with fluoro. Just a preference issue I guess.
  7. 40 lb Big Game mono breaking strength is closer to 50
  8. Dances you have a PM
  9. Nice brown....given the length it is about 7 -7 1/2 lbs.
  10. They wreak havoc with the fishery. They are very fast and accurate when they target something. I know a lot of the marinas in California have been inundated with them and they even chase boat owners off theiir own boats at the docks and have bitten people as well.
  11. Jason depending on what these actually are and their condition they may be worth a lot more than $20 so maybe get an estimate from someone before selling too quickly.
  12. Sounds like a nice trip. " It was kind of funny seeing a seal (sea lion) surface about 100 ft behind us as we were fishing" - Once fishing near San Diego for tuna we had a bunch of them behind and along side us on a charter and they dove down and took the bait right off all our hooks without getting hooked themselves....they can be a real pain but they can be pretty funny too.
  13. Does leave a little bit tio the imagination doesn't it?
  14. It can also be beneficial to have a DC cell phone charger kept on the boat if you have an plug in outlet.
  15. Sweet! That is a beauty Stix...congrats!
  16. WTG Brian. I haven't seen a year like this since the late eighties. Lake O has been on fire this year and especially so with the kings, and I'm sure the "armchair quarterbacks" that didn't get a chance to get out there are more than a little regretful
  17. I think I saw you out there Jeff but didn't fully realize it at the time. I whizzed past in my Whaler on joyride with my wife and daughter....I was jealous of you folks fishing
  18. The way to go - Teleflex Sea Star Hydraulic.
  19. Brand new alkaline batteries in the probe? Is there a loose wire to the batteries?Battery compartment cover screwed down tight? placement of transducer away from anything that has a frequency within range of 70khz?
  20. Silver Hoarde with the red mouth one close to the ball about 8 ft and the other about 15 ft back. Can also be run off shorter coppers (200-300's) or leadcore down the chute or even toplined in shallower water, but sometimes they can be too much to handle right on inline planers
  21. If you use either the shark type or torpedo weights you can usually get away with 10 lb weights if your speed isn't real fast. The current was pretty bad out there yesterday with a down speed reaching 3.3 sometimes while surface speed 1.9 or 2.0 but you can often adjust things by trolling diagonally and reducing your surface speed.
  22. It is unfortunate that this thread has taken such a "polarized" path when the actual reality of the situation is that someone has lost their life and a family has been devastated by that fact. Whether the perceived attitude of the involved fishermen was one of overconfidence, "arrogance", or perceived "stupidity"by others is irrelevant at this point. The public information on this incident seems scant thus far so the potential learning benefit is unknown and that is what should be focused on...whether we can learn something specific from the situation that might enable others to avoid a similar fate other than "Don't go out there in rough water". That is what should be sought after here rather than making assumptions and casting blame regardless of one's perception of the situation in the absence of valid concrete information. The basic fact remains that anyone can get into trouble out there including charter captains - and "Mother Nature hath no fury as a woman scorned" and Lake Ontario is no exception- no matter what sized boat,or the experience of the operator; she is unforgiving of mistakes.
  23. Yes and at least it wasn't within the first 4 hrs of the Trout Derby (taking you out of the entire 3 day derby) and 45 mph winds come up and both engines won't do the trick and you need to be towed 16 miles back to the launch against the wind by your fishing buddy who busts your bls for years to come and labels himself as your "savior" and puts that label on his cooler on the back of his boat
