  1. Mike I'm no mechanic but maybe check the lean rich fuel mixture position of the knob and the choke for starters? Is the bulb still going soft in the fuel line and air getting in?
  2. Precious pics....the fishing itself is sure secondary to that experience
  3. L&M in Port Bay has the best reputation in the area and is right here on LOU.
  4. I hear ya Joe
  5. There is a good chance he will remember that fish for life....I still remember mine and it was a 12 inch smallie at 4 yrs. .....but I caught it with my dad....that was the best part
  6. Man do those Manistee Wobblers bring back memories....I caught my first Lake O salmon on that yellow one with the red dots in the early 1970's right out in front of the Sodus Point light
  7. A lot of serious debris floating out on the lake right now (friend said propane tank another said shed roof etc.) so a lot of care will be needed if anyone goes out there in near future. Depending on wind direction/velociies the stuff could end up miles from there too.
  8. Bob from just the standpoint of being able to manipulate the handle itself the Okuma power handles seem pretty good to get ahold of. That big knob seems to fit the palm of the hand pretty well. My hunch is that they could be made to fit the Diawas despite the different holes.....possibly your machinist buddy could either modify the hole or make some sort of adapter for the shaft.
  9. Sorry Ed I just saw your post. check your PMs
  10. Bluefin 54 you have a PM
  11. I'm not so sure about the DEC being the major benefactor of the money brought in from licences and sports related revenue etc. Last I knew the money was being witheld and not necessarily dedicated to the DEC efforts either. The State Albany establishment wastes much of the money it receives from the various revenue sources via the general fund concept, and a lot of our money has been contributed to the bridge named after the Emporer Andrew's father.
  12. This does seem to be an interesting conversation...and I think the title could probably use some clarification. The title would suggest that 20 lb steelies were commonplace at some time in the past. I have fished Lake O (trolling) since the early 1970's and have fished it with some really good fishermen. I have never actually seen a 20 lb. steelhead. I have seen plenty over 10 lbs up into the teens though. I also remember some Cohos being mistaken for steelies in the earlier years One of the great things about Lake Ontario is it's ability to tolerate a lot of fishing pressure because of it's relatively large expanse and the presence of quite a few tributaries, large scale stocking efforts, and it is something to be fully appreciated and even celebrated. There is plenty of room for everyone and many styles of fishing, but no matter whether fishing the streams or the lake proper - care needs to be maintained by all to insure that the fishery is sustainable. It means great care is needed in releasing undersized or unwanted consumable fish and it applies to both options. We all have an investment in keeping the fishery viable and vibrant. It doesn't take much imagination to realize what the impact of the poachers and greedy uncaring others can do to this fishery. Rainbows or steelhead can be pretty fragile fish and perhaps even more care and time may be necessary on the release process and this is especially critical in the warmer water.
  13. Great report Bob and nothing like "King Sunday" to top off your week
  14. Nice work....good to see healthy looking silvers being caught
  15. The lake is on fire WTG
  16. A bit choppy in the AM so we didn't go as deep as we wished. Started marking good ones while heading out in 80-100 ft of water down 50-60 ft but couldn't get them to go. Some pods of bait spotted intermittantly throughout the day down about 60 ft over whatever...Connected with a 7 lb laker on wire dipsy and flasher fly out 200 ft of wire...released him. trolled for quite a while before landlock on 10 color with Laker Taker blue/siver spoon. Only hit on leadcore all day after many lure changes and riggers didn't do much either despite changes and sliders on both. Had what looked like a small king started on wire... got off. another few hits, but hours of trolling out to 310 ft without seeing anything or hits so went back inward and about 2:45 PM 20 lb king took the wire rig with Spinny and white home made fly for a ride in 120 ft of water wireout 220, and was totally exhausted after fighting his heart out so we kept him. My son's arms turned to rubber in the process many of the larger boats went deep and I think stayed out there where I had wanted to go so I imaging they got into them. Moderate spiny fleas mainly on wire. A buddy is out there right now and into them so my hunch was right Slow trolling but fun day just being out there.
  17. You are very right whaler....very different than the high secrecy of the "old days". Always a good idea to give back to the sport.....sometimes you just have to be careful about the way you do it
  18. Check your email Don
  19. The Founding Fathers were incredibly intelligent and had great insight, but they couldn't have possibly seen ahead to the complex issues involved in current times, nor would they have been fully prepared for some of the opinions by the various courts. The Constitution is one of the most wonderful documents of all time but it is a struggle interpreting it adequately in this crazy world of ours with current day.political influences bearing on the decisions. The problem is not with the Constitution itself it is with our complex society with its various interest groups and their agendas.
  20. Brook Trout you have a PM
  21. Sodus Point - right out straight from the channel and lighthouse. Keep an eye on the weather and if it starts to blow up you can still usually fish Sodus Bay (sheltered) depending on wind direction and velocity
  22. Those are really good ones but the one I am thinking about was quite some time ago and I believe it was 30 lbs or more. Those bigger lakers must be some pretty old dudes given that the they age slowly in general and the food supply there is not real rich. A number of the ones I used to catch through the ice had small perch or shiners in them.
  23. Fishing solo can always be a challenge. When I had my 13 ft Whaler. I used to steer it with my foot or knee while reeling in fish and netting. Early on I found that using shorter rods helped out, keeping my leaders short, and having the long handled net right at the back of the boat ready to go did as well. I also hand lined in a lot of kings which is always a challenge
  24. Luke I'm sure your grandfather would be very proud of your efforts...it looks great!
