Twisted up newbie issues
Sk8man replied to Jason717's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
It could be a function of the swivel hanging up somehow with the spinny rotating fast and your trolling speed may have been too fast for that combination. -

During one of them during the eighties I caught a 26 lb and change king and didn't have a scale in the boat and with the adenalin rush I thought it must be at least 30 lbs and puilled up everything and ran into the weigh station at Sodus and when it was weighed I noticed the leader board and it didn't even make the board that time There were some true hogs being caught back then....

I think I would alert any marinas in the surrounding area or guys that fix motors to be on the lookout for it if you have the serial number as well as the police in case the person (s) get busted wtih a bunch of stuff.etc. -

Cayuga Boat vs Shore fishing etiquette
Sk8man replied to FishLikeaGirl74's topic in Finger Lakes Discussion
I guess in the end we have to adjust to the fact that there are some inconsiderate people out there both in the water and on shore as well and unfortunately it is a part of the current culture and manners are becoming in real short supply. It happens stream fishing, lake fishing and just boating in general and not much wecan do other than not to be on the "offending" end of it. -

It is interesting about the pricing etc. I know there are basically two different main markets: the Japanese and American. The Japanese market is a huge auction setting where the prices are mainly influenced by fish color and shape whereas the American market is heavily influenced by fat content of the fish. On the show they describe both factors in the tail sample and core sample, but depending on each of those things the fish go to different markets. Another thing is that the actual treatment of the fish is VERY important after catching because the fish can build up huge amounts of lactic acid during the fight which can dramatically influence the quality of the meat and color etc. so they have to allow the fish to "cool down" in the water for awhile before icing it and transporting it to the buyer for evaluation. -

Yes the 2016 I have like FishnChef and like that pictured above from outlineoutboards has the 6 amp alternator that charges the battery. It needs to be run fairly fast to do much charging by the way not just trolling along slowly for the max. charge rate. Sweet motor and has higher thrust than my 9.9 Johnson 2 stroke had and a little less speed at top end. -

Something that bears mentioning lest we forget fishing in the ocean is a VERY dangerous undertaking. Gloucester has lost more than its share of fishermen over the centuries and is the oldest fishing seaport in the US. It was brought home extremely to the point when visiting the memorial to those fishermen that lost their lives over the nearly 400 years of the seaports existence . Nearly 4,000 fishermen lost their lives between the mid 1800's and the early 1900's with a total of 5,368 until 2011 according to the plaques with their names at the site. Very touching. -
Welcome Good introduction I think you will enjoy it here and I know there are others on here that fish right where you do. It is on and off there but try some egg sacks on bottom as well as sawbellies as the trout and salmon cruise around in there and when they are in it can be a blast. It can also be productive to fish bait with slip bobbers right there and perhaps jig with another rod to draw fish in to the baited rods from nearby. Good luck.

Transducer location on transom

You may wish to carefully consult the installation directions for that particular transducer as they can be slightly different for them as well as for the particular hull design of your boat. Often the hull curvature at the bottom of the transom throws people off as they are looking at the bottom of the boat rather than the ground itself and then orient the transducer facing somewhat outward rather than straight downward and when they get up on plane the cone angle is pitched outward and not down so they lose the bottom. The face of the transducer usually needs to be ever so slightly angled either inward or outward toward the back according to the degrees mentioned in the installation directions.and placed as far as possible away from any turbulence factors (e.g. ridges or flow areas etc. in the hull). -

John - I didn'r think to ask that one... a good question but I think they do troll for them in North Carolina when they fish during the winter season. They basically skip the lures or bait across and near the surface behind "birds" which are kinda like our version of planer boards and troll quite fast compared with our "world" -

Just an FYI as far as the Tohatsu vs. Merc. They are similar in that they are both manufactured by the same company but they are not identical when you look at the specs. I have the Tohatsu 9.8 (2016) and it is constructed a bit lighter than the Merc 9.9 of similar model weight-wise too which is one reasons I bought it as I didn't want to over power my bracket. I am very satisfied with the Tohatsu though and I bought it from Outboardsonline.
