That should take some of the sting out of our last trip to Keuka for the perch for Mike
-
I find it interesting that there is a 25 fish limit on Crappies yet 50 for perch. Why not make it consistent and 25 for all panfish? One of the things that may help too is putting back the large spawner female perch and selectively taking ones that are of edible size (e.g. 10-12 inches) and a 9 inch minimal size limit. Every year I see folks keeping a multitude of small perch (both shore fishing and ice fishing) that I wonder how they have enough to even fillet and whether they are destined for their aquarium or something .Some of us have routinely practiced throwing some big ones back over the years but the selling of perch being allowed is also a big threat in some areas despite the feelings and opinions of the folks who do it. Every time this is mentioned though the proponents of this practice have a fit as though their whole livelyhood is being threatened and their human rights are being violated. A lot of emotiopnal attachment on both sides of the issue.

Hughes 9-23-17 Admiral Byrd and I decided to give it one probably last of the season go for steelies and young salmon as I don't care much about fishing for the staging black salmon anymore....kind of a let them spawn and die in peace thing I guess We intially messed around in real close for the browns and managed only a couple 2-3 lb smallies so out we went to the deeper water. We fished out to about 650 or so and spent time in between going in and out and marked a bunch of bait suspended and near bottom but not many fish and what we marked were "spotty" and down real deep for the most part (some down 250-350). Didn't have a temp device with us so played with the depth and first score was a steelie about 5 or 6 lbs on a ten color leadcore off an inline board off a multicolored magnum spoon. We fished from 7 Am until 7:30PM and caught a mixed bag of immature salmon and nice sized steelies. Most came on downriggers down 100 ft plus or minus 10 ft with the exception of the largest steelie (about 10 lbs) that took a wonderbread diver/spinney with a silver homemade fly on a wire rig. I think we ended up 14 for 17 at the end of the long day with about 8 immatures salmon and all the steelies of nice size. Two steelies could not be successfully released but the largest and the remaining ones tookoff to fight another day. All the salmon were released unharmed. Beautiful very hot day out there and the sun was pretty brutal and that is something you seldom say on September 23rd Only took one pic of a representative mid sized fish that had to be kept because we wanted to release all others possible without handling.

Has anyone ever ran 30-50lb roller rods?
Sk8man replied to Cameron Jaeger's topic in Tackle and Techniques
Hopefully you're not runnong solo with 18 rod spread I'm not sure from your description as far a s length and composition of the rods but at that 30-50 probably glass "boat rods" maybe 6 to 7 ft or so? I've used many different roller rods over the years and still do for both dipsys and Seth Greens. The stiffer rods work well for Seth Green (multiple leader) rigs but they wouldn't be my first choice for salmon or dipsy rods. I use lighter weight rods for both now after years of experimenting because one of the most valuable tips about your equipment (and lures especially) is the functioning and the action of the rod tip. It gives a lot of useful information whether Seth Greening or with Dipseys and with the stiffer rods it is greatly reduced or absent. Another thing is that the larger diameter rods usually have larger and perhaps wider roller tips and there can be much more "play" at the sides of the tips.and thinner wire like 30 lb can get lodged over the edges and be a problem so you have to go to at least 60 or 90 lb wire to get away from it and then you have a lot of drag (e.g. blow back) in the water. If the rods have the cheaper aluminum sided roller tips the 30 lb can cut through the side plates as well. My suggestion would be to get roller rods that have some medium/light action at the tip and have stainless roller tips like the older Allen roller tips. Good roller tips are important and also can be expensive for Aftcos and above. -
Good luck with it Stan.

John has always been a great fisherman....even before the Lake Ontario scene. He was one of the top night fishermen on Canandaigua back in the eighties too. Always has been highly regarded by other fishermen including me I remember having "boat envy" even back then when I was night fishing out of my little 13 ft Whaler at the south end Just to get an idea of his approach to chartering take a look at the comments on his website. -
I think Stan is referring to California....not sure whether fresh or saltwater environment. Stan - Double check your swivel snap at the end of the wire if it is a split ring type replace it with HEAVY DUTY SOLID ring ball bearing swivel, One of the things that happens with the split ring type of swivel is the line or wire "nests" in the split section and with tension it cuts through the line or wire. Check out the wire for a few yards to see if any fraying sections...sometimes helps to use magnifying glass (especially us old dudes) Maybe use the "tie the wire" method of connecting it instead of crimping if you are doing that. If the wire is old or questionable try reversing the wire on the spool so that the back part becomes the front...I know it is a pain.... and easier to just put on new wire and go from scratch.

You are right Brett these guys are best folks out there and you can always count on them to have your back or do the right thing. The FLT group has some of the most capable fishermen in the Finger Lakes in it and those of us that know them have a great deal of respect for them. I also think that LOU has helped bring fishermen together in ways that never had been noted or perhaps recognized before and that is a real plus as well. Your note is a real good example

In another 3 weeks look for them in bay areas in early morning and evening hours small spoons or small sticks trolled in shallow and around docks etc. -
X2 on Progressive after switching from Travelers for over 30 years and never catching a break without any claims.

Nice going Mike and sounds as though you and the kids had fun out there as well and that is what it is all about. Paul is a real good one to get the jigging tips from as he has this lake dialed in real well. Those weeds were driving us nuts the other day too....They were all over the place...

Long Point State park also has a very good launch and there are lake trout in abundance in that area without going too far. Fishing toward bottom in about 90ft would be a good place to start or when you start seeing them "on screen". They can also bein the upper layers of the water way out of temperature near bait too. They seem to be pretty active right now while the silvers can be more "elusive" . Definitely wise to experiment a lot with different setups for the the silvers and play with the distances to the lure as well. Small sized stick baits from riggers or even run behind flashers or dodgers can work too even from 7-10 color leadcores or 200-300 coppers. Be prepared to be dealing with lakers grabbing the setups for silvers They can be hard to keep away from your stuff -
Malin, or Accustrand (Cablestrand Corporation) have both worked fine for me for years.

Just an FYI- I'm not sure about the downstate part of the canal but on the upper part of the canal from Rochester west there is a speed limit and it is nowhere close to 25 mph> basically your boats registration number and description is logged in at any lock or lift bridge on the canal that you pass through by the operator and each operator is telephoned ahead of your arrival to the next lift bridge or lock with your information. If you arrive in real short fashion they can tell basically your estimated speed from the time it took to get there from the other bridge or lock and the troopers will be there to ticket you if excessive speed is recorded. This is mainly to protect the canal from erosion due to excessive wakes.

WTG nice looking healthy fish Funny how last time out we had our lines set narly exactly the way you described and couldn't stay away from the lakers
