One of the things I can't help wondering about is the goby/botulism/toxins issue....If fish start really feeding on them and take all this stuff into their system what will happen to the fish meat quality and relatedly what effects wiil there be if folks dump the entrails and carcasses into the water? Might be something to think about....

Congrats John -
Back in the Fall of 1975 I was fishing with 2 friends from work on the one guys boat out of Sodus Point. We launched at what was then Bob Chase's Restaurant and Tackle Shop. We got to the channel and started out of it and one of the guys who couldn't wait to get a line out and had never caught a salmon before had a topline with a chartreuse Manistee Wobbler on it right through the channel and just as we reached the lighthouse the line started ripping out like there was no tomorrow. The guy instinctively put his thumb down on the spool to stop the line from going out. He had about a 20 lb lking on the other end of his line. I couldn't believe my eyes when histhumb starting smoking from the friction and he let out a real war whoop along with a few expletives I can't record here Two weeks later I saw him in the administration building at work and he still had a big bandage on it Lesson one: never thumb spool a king....

You can also carefully cast the board over the dipsey with the clicker on and drag off with a little practice.

salmon education
Sk8man replied to Chinook Chaser's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
Some good tips here from knowledgeable folks. An important consideration is also knowing your target fish real well and their habits especially seasonally. As mentioned above salmon are pelagic fish meaning that they inhabit the upper layers of water (typically the open sea..remember although they have been "transplanted" to the Great Lakes they basically spend much of their lives in salt water in their native conditions) so they roam great areas in search of food. and because they are not bottom oriented the structure considerations that pertain to demersal fish (those living on or near bottom or near to shore) do not really apply. Breaks in temperature, bait distribution and availability are the main concerns and this largely determines their positioning in the water column as well as the areas they tend to roam. When in search of bait they may go way out of what is thought to be their "preferred temperature" and they may orient close to bait pods that are on or near bottom despite not truly being bottom oriented dwellers if actively feeding or the temperature is desirable in summer. In late summer as Fall approaches the feeding and temperature considerations pretty much go out the window for mature fish anyway. Their urge to feed is replaced by the one to reproduce and spawn so their roaming becomes more shore oriented and when they start homing in on their home streams and they are no longer actively feeding and may be "staging" near bottom off the mouths of streams. Now they they mainly hit lures out of aggression.so you shift your methods toward trying to irritate them with active lures and bright colors as contrasted with trying to lure them to bite out of a feeding response. -

Hughes &-16-17 My son Mark and I left about 6 AM aboard the Admiral Byrd boat and the wind started to pick up as soon as we got outside the launch. We motored out to about 220 ft or so and dropped the 6 lines in and struggled to go against the wind for a while....nothing for the first hour or so. After awhile the wind changed direction and let up a bit . We took a couple kings and 2 steelies in the 200-260 ft range. Three fish off riggers set to 75-80- ft with medium spoons (eg. NK28"s) and one wire dipsey set to 250 with a black flasher and white homemade UV fly took a king. None of the fish were huge but respectable fish with one jumping 6 times before landing. Later on the fish wanted larger spoon and deeper (100 over 240 ft). Had two kings on that got off while Bob was having a couple senior moments and one of them jumped about 5 ft. in the air a couple hundred ft behind the boat. The fleas were light where we fished but when the sun got high and it warmed up the biting flies were terrible and I was thankful that I had anticipated it and wore long pants and shirt the whole time unlike my companions that were slapping them mercilessly. It also may have been one of the cases demonstrating "less is more" as we fished 3 rods on one side of the boat and 5 on the other and most fish came from the three rod side....Bob was convinced it had nothing to do with skill of the guys doing the rigging on the 3 rod side, but I felt it might be that "Les is more" in this case. Fun day although the late morning and afternoon was slow and was without fish. We marked very few fish and only one very small pod of bait. The marked fish were all at the 72-79 ft level and would not bite anything. A couple of fish pics Mark caught. Kept the pictured fish as they weren't thought to be able to recuperate (note the mess in the corner of the boat which gave Bob a chance to curse profusely while gloating about his new water washdown hose).

jk1 has given you good advice. There can be a lot gained from direct observation and experience versus a description written on here. Little details or nuances can make alll the difference int he world. The downrigger line set 30 ft behind the boat may be fine for a spoon setup but with cowbells etc. and especially running close to bottom you should be running much shorter maybe 4-8 ft behind the weight. I would also suggest not fishing too close to the bottom until you feel completely comfortable and experienced with the riggers. A 10 lb weight would also be suggested for less blowback (although the 8 lb may have saved you equipment this time) I hope you aren't considering running close to the bottom with riggers while using the Seth Green rigs. Don't get too disheartened yet about not catching as much as before as quite a few guys have commented about how the fishing has dropped off a bit with the water conditions and weather...just part of the ups and downs of fishing. Hang in there and take jk1's advice. Good luck.

Certainly depends on size and type of boat. I have never had any waves come over any part of my 18 ft. Whaler from any direction despite having 2 batteries, 3 gal gas tank, and a 4 stroke 9.8 onthe back.

I have had it on the port side of mine and it works great that way and on my previous boat had it starboard and it seemed to be in the way much of the time fishing solo and netting on the starboard side to be nearer the steering. Another personal preference issue I think....

Seneca Whats for lunch ? Add you own way to cook the fish !
Sk8man replied to ERABBIT's topic in Finger Lakes Discussion
No matter what recipe you decide to use or the specific fish used the initial care and preparation of the fish may be the most important factor. If you intend to eat it bleed the fish immediately after caught and put it right on ice in a plastic bag. When you filllet it avoid the thick back area and the belly meat.. Cut out the dark lateral line material. Take the skin off the fish. Doing these things will minimize the strong fishy taste of the fish. For some of the strong tasting saltwater varieties the fillets can be soaked for a few hours in salt water with concentrated lemon juice added to it (e.g. for bluefish etc. It will suck the fat and oil right out of the fish. Salmon, lakers, or rainbows cooked over the grill in an aluminum pan or foil in Wishbone Italian dressing and a little lemon juice and a little garlic powder, and Old Bay seasoning can be great and very simple and quick to do.If the skin is left on the fillet cook it with the skin side down and it will pull off when removing the fillet. Carve out any dark lateral line material before serving. -

Spoon hook replacement , what do you use ?

Ed I have used the the Mustad 3x SS Siwash Salmon hooks #9550?) formore than 30 years and I have them on well over 1000 or more spoons and have never had a failure with them. I seldom lose fish with them either and if so it has not been the hook at fault. The hook has a very sharp elongated point which penetrates deep even on light hookups. The only lures I haven't changed to them are sticks and Revolution spoons because of the balance factor. I use 2/0 for smaller spoons and 3/0 for medium/ large spoons. -

Good luck with the power boat racing stuff going on. Back when they used to hold the hydro races I was fishing on the west aside across from Sampson and the fish were literally jumping out of the water allover the place when the boats were really winding to avoid the noise -
The older black rubber straps with steel hooks are stronger than the bungi's I have used them for years on my 3 gal. tank. Good idea to always check to see that you have them connected up though Dragged a tank earlier this season because I was half asleep when I left in the AM and didn't hitch up the strap...one of those hundred buck lessons Always make sure to leave enough room when you fill the tank (not past the max level) so the gas has room to expand.
