It is a good example Ben.The landlocks and rainbows as well have varied diets which highly influence their behavior. You'll find the same thing about rainbows in mid June through much of July as insects hatch they will be out in the middle of the lake skimming the surface for bugs and often they won't touch trolled spoons but can be susceptible to a flyrod and flies. It is way out of their preferred temperature range then but their location is more determined by the availability of bait sources.

A lot of it relates more to the positioning of the baitfish as they usually follow the baitfish patterns and it also may vary by species of the fish (e.g. lakers vs. landlocks etc.). Even time of day is a big factor combined with amount of sunshine because of the increased water clarity now and that is especially critical for browns. Water temperature is only one factor (and often important) but not always the main one. This is not just limited to Cayuga either.

Make sure you actually try out things before going the trolling plate route because I can troll down to 1.8 with my 135 Merc if necessary but it is a 2 stroke. I also have a stainless high speed prop. The older 2 stroke Merc 50 horse motors (probably one of the best ever made) would troll down to about 1.5 or so on a friends 16 ft Starcraft. Getting the right prop set up on it according to your intended use may be something to look at too.

Sounds like the impeller/pump may be the problem (edited the rest after noticing that it was a 25 hp engine and the computerized stuff mentioned probably didn't apply)

In general it isn't a matter of just arbitrary amount of "time" spent it is about doing something different and persistence when you're marking and not getting anything to hit. If you combine what the above three guys have given you and then repeatedly keep after them where marked back and forth you should connect. If not they may not be trout or salmon that you are seeing OR they are just not hungry or active. So after several tries with negative results you move on and keep changing things up depending on what you are seeing on the screen and temperatures. Some folks give up too early.

Jeremy - Sometimes "less is better" at least in terms of "clutter" at the back end of a boat. A lot of times you're scrambling to net fish and laying the net down back there or rods placed there while netting etc. and putting electronics there on non-charter smaller boats may be just another glitch waiting to happen unless there is truly the space for it.. I keep my previous depth finder which can serve as a backup to the present one in my vehicle during derbies etc. and I have left the previous transducer and speed impeller on the boat as the displays can both use it if I need to substitute. So at least I have something to go with if something happens to my present one. It would seem to me that the Fishhawk could be in the way back there as well and it would be a shame to damage the display. All it might take is a misplaced knee or someone leaning against it accidentally as it is the least protected area of a boat generally. Just food for thought.

Billy is right....it varies from day to day there. I wouldn't discount your Seth Greens for sure because even the landlocks can be deep out there (e.g. 80-100 ft down) sometimes and with the variety of fish being caught out there you might end up with all you can handle if things continue the way they have been lately. You can also run some of the other options right along with the rigs. Flasher /fly combinations work there and be sure to bring ORANGE colored spoons with you There is something tobe said for running familiar stuff until you get a feel for the lake and then adjust your tactics accordingly as things change from day to day let alone weeks before going there.

I usually mix them up (flashers with and without echips), spinneys, and the older dodgers and I let the fish decide. I don't think there is a hard fast rule as I have caught fish on each. In my view it may be the particular action of one or the other at that particular time with that particular fish that seems to be the determining factor. There are just too many variables involved to really say one way of the other.I also think that whatever may have worked for someone in the past may influence the amount of time any one thing may be used so it may not a fair comparison between the options anyway. As mentioned above I have had better luck over time with all of them run off wire and dipseys rather than off downriggrers.
