Panfishing smaller lakes in FL region
Sk8man replied to bulletbob's topic in Finger Lakes Discussion
You might want to try the south end of Honeoye for the panfish and perch and largemouth bass even basic worm on a hook should work there. The lake doesn't usualy get very rough and there is a bathroom rright there at the launch -
OK- in that case the GPS wouldn't have anything to do with the temp readings per se so if both are varying together it may be related to the transducer itself or its placement on the hull. . Also have you physically checked the transducer to see that it isn't loose at speed? I would also check the wire carefully on the transducer to see that it isn't cracked or separated anywhere for starters. If you have a friend withthe same unit maybe ask them if you can test out things with their unit on your transducer to see if it happens there. If so the transducer is the problem. If the transducer doesn't turn out to be it have you installed the latest software upgrade for the unit (Oct. 2016)? http://www.lowrance.com/en-US/Software-Updates/Elite-60/

The heavy version is fine for rods with large diameter tips and eyes and I use them on my rods with roller tips and although you don't NEED roller tips for copper you do have more line connection options with them and the copper comes on very smoothly.but I have to go with the #8's on most of the other rods.with conventional tips and eyelets.

The speed bouncing all over sounds as though it may be the speed impeller placement rather than the unit itself

I normally use #8's on the copper without any real problems but this also depends on the diameter of the holes in your particular rod tip and guides (e.g. some eye inserts take up more space than others) as well as the particular knot used and the line diameters. I use a finely twisted haywire on the copper end and a standard clinch knot on the leader end of the swivel. I have never had any problems with this setup but you do have to tie as tightly as possible (cinching down the clinch knot wet) to make the knots as small as possible to fit through and test them before using. Might sound like a pain the way I'm describing but isn't really. I have more faith in this setup than some of the other knots where I've had breakoffs in the distant past. The #8 Spro is rated at 50 pound test. If worried about the knot parts a tiny amount of Seal All glue canbe applied to the very ends.

Adjustable mirror is the simplest (old school) way to go., The swivel arm units used for depth finders and GPS' with a suitable mirror attached and well positioned (suction cup mount can be helpful) can be a real help when fishing alone and in heavy traffic.

Jeremy - I think Joe offers some real good advice and especially since most of your fishing is done on Lake O. There is a significant difference between most of the 17 or 18 ft boats and those at 20 ft. It seems to be a real point of departure in terms of floatation, roominess, freeboard depth, weight capacity, and and in some cases handling in rough water. The 20 ft range seems to be close to ideal for solo fishing/launching too (which may be real important to you). Over the years I have ridden in a bunch of boats in this class size and talked with a lot of folks who have moved both up and down and it has only reinforced this view. Bandrus hit it right when he said that if you get a good quality used hull in good shape (Deep V important for Lake O) and then repower with a new motor you'll have reliability for years and be a "happy camper" because the boats themselves are nearly like cars in terms of depreciation (i.e. drive them from the marina and they lose value immediately).

The latest and greatest from ProKing for 2017
Sk8man replied to Gotta Bite's topic in Tackle Description
There should be plenty of room for each product to be sold on here and elsewhere for BOTH and nobody should be "threatened" by competition when they are putting out a top notch product. I have a bunch of the the Pro King spoons which are very well made and I am familiar with Brian's super productive high quality Gambler rigs and it seems that folks will sort out their preferences for quality and pricing factors according to their own tastes without the need for getting into negative commentary. All small businesses deserve a break these days and the ones on here deserve our support. -
I would be caiutious about running them with 7 strand stainless wire though as the line guide on the reel frame is made of aluminum and often stainles wire cuts through aluminum over time.

The handhelds may be fine for close to land use but the 1 W or 5 W power although it is better than nothing out there but it is also quite limited compared with a 25 W unit with the proper antennae. The antennae on handhelds is quite limited in range. Good antennaes properly matched to the unit and placed correctly on the boat are essential to good reception and transmission.

custom downrigger weights
Sk8man replied to bikinibottom's topic in Classifieds - Buy, Sell, Trade or Rent
To anyone deliberating about buying weights (or replacing old ones) don't hesitate getting these. Lead prices always seem to be increasing and these are carefully handcrafted very sleek weights of high quality that glide through the water. It is always beneficial to support our own guys in their efforts to supply high quality products to us tailored to our specific needs. Rich is a real good guy to do business with and I highly recommend him (and admittedly I'm a pretty fussy guy).
