A long time ago I was fishing at Long Point State Park and I thought I'd save time and launch very early in the AM so I just parked all night near the launch with my boat and trailer and slept in the truck. In the wee hours of the AM I awoke to the sound of people talking and various loud noises. I looked out the window and there were hundreds of people surrounding me and taking their kayacks off their car tops and bicycles etc. and I was blocked in and had to get the hell out off there and went to Owasco instead

I have noticed it as well in my new one and it is in the exact place where I like to be but most of the time I can pretty much take it out by just messing with the throttle just past it in either direction as it is confined pretty specifically that specific point (luckily). I guess I am a little tolerant of it from switching from my noisier 2 stroke and I had a problem there right at my "sweet spot" where it was either too fast of too slow and hard to get "just right".....kinda like baby bear in the chair situation inm the Three Bears story

Good that you had some action at least. Probably a couple reasons why no reports. For awhile now the fishing has been off for trout and not much marked out there. The other reason is that is is now the height of the recreational boating season and even on the week days is gets crowded and everything seems to be "spooked" by all the commotion after 10 AM especially and last timeout there were even a bunch of jet skis near me at 7 AM

Send them out to Tuna Tom and save yourself some headaches. Quick return time and fair prices.

fishing Sodus Point tomorrow any updated info?

Thanks guys much appreciated. He has never experienced a king and got me into great fishing for sea trout and redfish in SC last Fall so I'm hoping to nail something in the way of a king to initiate him . Supposed to be 5-10 out of N NE so hoping that is allit gets to from that direction -
A buddy from South Carolina is visiting (very knowledgeable salt water guy) and I was wondering if anyone has a good handle of what is going on right now out of there. I'm also wondering about the condition of the public launch. any info would be appreciated.

Hey Jim, I looked back at my notes that I keep on each reel (line type, amt, date put on etc.) and I put 150 ft of 50 lb test Big Game on that reel underneath. I apparently didn't carefully read what I had written above either because I was thinking about the 30 lb wire when I wrote 30 lb mono as well so disregard that. Rob's info is probably closer to the mark. It is purely "filler" too. You aren't going to get spooled with that 1,000ft although sometimes whenthey start running you might think so.
-
Jim I'd take the braid off. You'll need space for the wire. Iuse just about 50 ft of 30 lb mono and then attach the wire. Tuna Tom's suggested the mono on there to help take pressure off the spool of the reel rather than just the wire. Some guys just put the wire straight on too. .but I figured with all the reels they repair Tuna may know something I'd didn't. You'll need the space on the Magda anyway.

sandror you are technically correct but folks often refer to them as "eels" around here. I think Nick has seen a few of each to tell the difference but it is a good point of reference for folks not familiar with the Sea lampreys vs. American Eels they are indeed two distinctly different species. Lets hope the lampricide treatments are truly working Pap....

In my world that is a good sign Nick as it may mean the treatments are taking hold and maybe the smaller ones are on the decline. We had one even a little longer on lake O last time out but he ended somehow with a crushed head .....gee what a shame.....must have gotten our pliers too close to his head

The temps are messed up right now because of the wind but you don't ever want to rely totally on water temps....the big boys are often found out of their temp range.

You can do it as you are suggesting but keep in mind that you will be changing the arc or angle of the line in the water too so that it will not be as horizontal in the water column and this will affect the depth it is running as well (shallower than intended). When the backing is extended as well the lead core lies flatter in the horizontal plane as well as achieving greater depth. The action of the line and lure may be different in the water column as well. Running the 10 colors I'm assuming you wish greater depth vs. the 7 but this wouldn't be the way to "maximize" that.

Real good points plugs are quite speed sensitive to work most effectively.

Especially in Asia....some (Koi meaning Carp) have sold for over $100,000 each the ones that are white with orange irregular spotting are highly sought after. I've seen them in Seneca, Cayuga and Canandaigua while perch fishing over the years. Another case of idiots releasing invasive species (in this case from their goldfish bowls)....

The roller rods are what I have used for years for everything from Seth Greens to the wire rods and even one for copper although it not necessary with copper but the friction coming in is reduced a lot on that one. They are more expensive though than the twilli solution and usually shorter rods in length.

Fort Knox might be easier to get into than getting that info from folks

A couple things come to mind with the above type of fishing you intend to do (e..g. no Pacific salmon fishing)depending on budget. If you have the $$$ to spend but are budget minded think about getting a couple new wire dipsey setups already rigged for that purpose with 1,000 ft of wire already on it. For example places like Runnings often have them already set up and ready to roll for about $130 or so. They are not the top of the line reels and rods but are serviceable for what you intend to do.... basically medium action stuff. I think they often use something like the Okuma 45DX Magda Pro for those and they aren't bad for that type of fishing. I have a few of the reels I use on the Finger Lakes and they have decent capacity. On the other hand another option is to see if you can pick up a pair of second hand Diawa 47LC Great Lakes model reels (have a good retrieval rate of about 5:1) They are often for sale here on Lou and reasonably priced and they are fine for the type of fishing you mentioned and set them up with 30 lb 7 strand or 19 strand Torpedo stainless wire. Look for a couple Okuma GLS medium Dipsey rods. If they come with a twilli tip (for use with wire) you'll be all set if not places like Fish USA or Fish 307 carry them or places like Runnings or Gander Mountain etc. In any event in order to run wire without damaging your equipment you'll need either a twilli tip or a rod with a roller tip and roller first guide. You may wish to send the reels out to Tuna Tom for carbon Fiber drags and you'll be a happier camper . I think the rods come in9 and 10 ft sizes so with either you'll get good separation from your downrigger but the 9 maybe more practical with a smaller boat.

Not a stupid question at all. I think some folks do still troll for salmon with sticks but they are usually most effective in the Spring rather than at this point in the season. J-plugs are still used but as even in the old days primarily later in the season or Fall. The dodger and squid may not be as "popular" anymore but that combo still works and should be kept in the arsenal. Dodgers have different action than flashers or spinneys and sometimes the fish seem to want something different so it pays to hold on to the old stuff whether spoons or attractors for when a 'change up" is needed to get the fish to hit.
