Jeff - Although the colored water generally originates from streams and stream mouths it disperses according to the wind and wave action often along the shoreline but again depending on wind direction etc. it may extend outward. Quite often there may be birds (e.g. gulls) and debris at the edge of it too which is something to look for out there. Usually working the edge of the color in and out and back and forth produces. Water temps also change with the wind (e.g. mixing or pushing warmer water to the surface or outward or inward) and other factors such as run-off from streams as well. The shallower water near shore in the Spring generally warms first and the browns seem quite sensitive to even minor changes in temperature of a degree or two. Water temperature is a very important factor in Spring fishing and coloration is not just the "muddying" of the water it is also important to note where the color of the other water changes from dark to lighter as it may denote temperature changes that also involve changes in the density of the water affecting fish behavior in a manner like "penning" them within a barrier and this change at the edge of the color change can and should be exploited by trolling in an out of it. Again depending on wind and wave action this situation may appear away from stream mouths and in fact way away from them or out deep in the water.

And hopefully the redds won't get trampled this year

To answer King Slammin - I think the Walleye boards are more flexible at least for the trolling I do as you can slide to shift/adjust the bottom weight on them to accomodate stuff as it gets heavier so they run right. I wasn't saying that they weren't any good just not as flexible to use and the walleye boards seem to pull about the same stuff as the 22's. I use the 44's for the longer coppers when I use boards and not running down the chute (most frequent use). I don't run any over 350-400 anyway.

There are a number of options and some of it depends on the size of your reel. I use 300 yds of 40-50 lb Power Pro braid on mine. If you have a smaller reel perhaps 300 yds of 30 lb braid would suffice. If you are not fishing Lake O (where kings abound hopefully ) you may be able to get by with 150 yds of 30 lb if you intend to run coppers on lower capacity reels. I use separate setups for Lake O and the Finger Lakes for example. You also can run shorter copper lengths and add weight to get them down further if you decide you need the extra backing. The reason the backing length becomes critical is especially when you run them off boards because you have the distance to the board as well as the potential length for fighting a fish and a lot of folks worry about getting spooled b y a large king because of not enough backing. Avoid using a clinch knot to tie them together as it can slip with braid. I use a small SPRO #8 power swivel for the connection and also for the connection to the fluorocarbon leader. but there are other ways as well.

Here above is a great example of what makes this website different than most and a wonderful resource. Unlike some places the charter guys and avid sport fishermen alike are willing to share with others to make the sport better. It sure is an improvement on the "old days" where little if any info was shared among fishermen and about the best that you could hope for was closely observing an "old timer" without them realizing it

Finally back on the water

I'm not sure if it is the same with new motors but my 2 stroke 9.9 has always have electric start and the alternator and I was told by an experienced mechanic that in order for it to be charging to any significant degree the motor has to be running at a substantial speed and faster than a slow troll.

Kingfisher - You chastise Kevin for bringing up experiential items that he feels relevant yet you continue to dream up these analogies that have absolutely nothing to do with the issue. You mention that you haven't sold perch in over ten years and yet pretend to be an expert on the current status of things as well as knowledgeable about sanitary practices and inspections of restaurants. You allude to being a high level policy maker biologist which you think adds to your credibility and you deride the motives and opinions of others who disagree with your position and then question the ethics of others without actually knowing anything about them or their actual situations and then pretend that others are responding emotionally yet you fail to see how the things you are saying appear to others and that much of it is viewed to be irrational. It is very obvious you have an axe to grind with the government, the educational system and anyone else that doesn't align themselves with your way of thinking. I also share some of your mistrust for big government intrusions, the so-called SAFE Act, Emperor Cuomo etc. but those concerns don't transfer to students and teachers becoming involved in current issues relevant to their future. There should always be room for differing opinions and discussion without questioning the motives, actions or beliefs of others it is how we learn.

Those look like some real healthy ones too John unlike the ones reported this year through the ice

Nice "eye". Esox Only- Although a trolling plate might be a consideration I'd go with the trolling bag idea first because the trolling plate can be a pain depending on which style you get different potential problems. On the spring loaded version the springs eventually wear through the hinge sections on the side that they hook into, and what the type that you have a lanyard if you forget to pull it when taking off it can really mess up the plate and bend the crap out of it.I've had both types on my last boat and ended up taking them off. The bags are less expensive and I think you'll be a lot happier with them.

Look I'm talking about individual sellers catching perch some of whom fillet them before sale, and then delivering them to local or mom and pop restaurants in our area -not through some processor or formal arrangement allowing for inspection. The sale of the perch is only one item or factor in the current situation and in contrast to the invasives and water quality etc. is something that lends itself to changing. My main problem here is the denigration of the teacher and students by claiming they are "indoctrinated" or brainwashed when they put together an informational proposal and suggesting that they have no basis for their opinions.

Good answer Pete

True but what I was referring to is Bazooka Joe's comment about the kings. A 15 or 20 lb king is a handful on 8 lb test line.
-
Just a little side issue to think about....if you intend to release the fish you catch there is something to be said for using 12 lb test over 8 lb in terms of the amount of time usually necessary playing the fish because you have to take it easier with the 8 lb as well as set your drag lighter usually. You also may get a little better action from sticks with lighter lines and browns are notoriously line shy so you may get more hits with lighter smaller diameter line. It is always somewhat of a trade off. It still boils down to what you feel comfortable with and have confidence in and tend to have the best results with over time. I go either way depending on water conditions and clarity most of the time. The quality of your drag and the settings can be much more important than the pound test of the line itself.

"selling and buying of fish is regulated and inspected routinely." Total BS as is the rest. Restaurants are inspected generally but there isn't a specific inspection process for the perch and it would be "happenstance" if they happened to be inspecting when perch were present. There is no inspection regarding sanitary handling of perch where the fillets are cut before selling by the fisherman either.
