Sodus Point 8-25-15 - Kinda rough out there

If mid to late September there may be salmon right in the bay itself and it can become pretty much like Spring fishing for them and a few browns mixed in but there are also perch bluegills, bass and pike in there. I 'd get a good map of the bay with depth information and scope things out. The south end of the bay toward the middle as it becomes very shallow has a lot of panfish and pike and there are often perch in between Eagle and Newark Island right where it drops off to about 15 to17 ft of so. The bay fishing used to be a lot better when there were many more grass beds and before the zebras and all the other crap. Once the channel traffic dies down the area around the channel buoys at the north end near the inside of the channel can be good for perch. There is often good bass fishing near the Shaker Heights area and along the east shore of Thornton Point and sometimes the deeper water ((e.g. 30-40ft) in the center of the bay has nice smallmouth if you can locate them suspended there. I know some folks may be thinking that this info should have been in a PM but I don't think hoards of folks will be flocking there just to fish in the bay at that time of the year

Good news and it pays to fully report the stuff (e.g. to Merc etc.). Lets hope it is more than a slap on the wrist too.

My friend/neighbor is a skilled bass/walleye/muskie fisherman with years of experience mostly on Lake Erie but had not fished Lake O and had never caught a King salmon despite fishing in Alaska etc. and catching other varieties of salmon. His new to him 20 ft Crestliner boat also had not been tested on "big water" so early this AM we ventured forth at 4:30 AM and headed for Sodus Point. As we were going out of the channel we saw one of the most beautiful sunrises we had either ever seen and no pic can do it justice. The forecast said winds out off the WSW at 5-10 and it was mostly southwest at 10 plus as we entered the lake and then a little later mostly west and building all the while. We trolled northwest out to 300 ft and then angled back as the waves built up to 180 ft of water and wham the 275 wire dipsey with a white spinney and white and chartreuse fly started taking line and the rod bent pretty good I said "there is your king" Dave said "How can you tell" I said "wait a minute and you'll fully realize it too " Sure enough the rod bent over and the drag kept going out even when he tightened it down a bit. There were 4-5 ft waves by then so I was in boat control mode and left Dave to his duties and he looked a little perplexed but did a journey man's job of reeling in the fish in very marginal water conditions. At 9:30 AM he has his roughly 15 lb king in the boat for a pic and then after reviving a bit back into the water. He was happy as a clam and said "Geez I'm going to have sore shoulders after that" So I couldn't help myself I replied "They call them kings for a reason". We trolled along with no other hits for hours with the water building all the time and now 15 -20 or so out of the NW and waves 4-6 ft so we trolled back to the channel as if surfing on the rollers and quit at 1:30PM. I think we now have another convert to the "king game"

Four wire diver rods on L.O.-is it worth it?
Sk8man replied to Mike M's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
I generally go with the same rigs as Steve's too but often with an additional leadcore or copper off a board to the outside. -
I use the #8 power swivels (50 lb test) for my connections because they are nice and small as well as strong and go through the rod eyes and tips well. i only loop the copper once and then make a lot of tight twists up the main wire and have never had one separate.

The problem here is kind of like trying to fit a square peg in a round hole.....more than one problem here too. As mentioned to accomplish what you wish you need a larger capacity reel for starters. Daiwa 47H reels are good reels and I have over a dozen of them and they have good capacity for normal mono use on downriggers etc. or for short applications of leadcore etc. In order to get away from the line capacity limitations of the reel something has to give in your equation. I know you already have the dacron line and leadcore but to use the 47H I'd suggest putting it away for another reel and getting 27 lb leadcore or microline leadcore and 30-40 lb Power Pro Spectra. You don't really need "rope" for line with kings as many folks believe. Before fleas 12 lb mono was used successfully for even the 30 lb plus fish. Having a good drag on the reel and using it well is the key to success as well as using your boat against them but you do have to have enough line to allow for the runs they make.

The simple answer would be "More is not necessarily better" It may be exciting for some folks to try to get away with running extreme setups to see what they can "get away with" but the main point to it all is to catch fish isn't it? Probably a case could be made for too much equipment down there in the same areas may spook the hell out of the fish. Yes it certainly can be done but is it worth messing with? Think about what things may look like down there with 4 or more dipseys and spinneys or flashers cranking around. It may work for some but would not be my first choice of a setup. -
WTG Kev . Bob did real well too. It was definitely the right area

Sounds as though you gave it a heck of a try anyway Mike. Lets hope this lack of action for matures is a delay of some type......oh wait....did I forget to take my medication today? -
Nick I know current can raise h with dipseys but without much here on Canandaigua the other day I was running my 124 mm Deeper Divers out 160 on a 1 setting and hitting bottom in 84 ft of water at 2.4 I don't think they can be beat for deeper setups. In the past I have hit bottom in 151 ft with a setting of 0 with 350 out at 2.3

You don't always have to catch a BIG fish to have fun
